Yes,Graham plays with Paul Anka now.he loves the Big -Band and the way he can just move in playing what is jazz. And ,yes.so underrated,it is beyond belief. He deserves every kudo, every placque because of his versatile playing.Agree?
1) For 30 years, every time I saw film footage of Santana playing Woodstock , I assumed Michael Shrieve WAS Graham Lear. They are the Sanata-drummer-twins! They even play alike.
2) As a drummer, no doubt Graham is one of the un-sung greats. Why he ever retired from big awesome rock acts is beyond me.
3) Casey Scheuerell is another unsung great who also also played with Gino Vanelli. Check out his insane work on Jean-Luc Ponty "Live" (1979)
I met Graham after he retired from Santana in the late eighties, in Portland. He was playing with a latin jazz band and teaching drum lessons to kids in a strip mall music store!!! I asked him if I could have a lesson or two, I play congas, so we got together just to play. After the first one, he said "I have time between students etc etc so why don't you just come and we'll play?" Super nice guy, unassuming and as good on drums as you can imagine.
Graham Lear player for Gino Vanelli before playing with Carlos, he has always been a very fin drummer, one of my favorites. If you want to hear a super drum solo with Graham, listen the live version of Moon Flower by Carlos Santana, recorded while in tour in Asia.
One of the frist rock drum solo i seen live was graham lear with carlos, In Market Square Arena. That sitll go's down as one of the best concerts i every seen. I wish music had the groove again
I have great memories of this concert, but the music press slated it, calling it 'soulless' and 'gutless', and sang the praises of Journey, who weren't very good at all!
Hey Guys: I have been trying to get Bernhard to put Grahm on Drummerworld for over a year now. I need help. Please get in contact with Drummerworld regarding this and get him on there. Good God Tommy Lee and no Graham Lear. It is a disgrace.
As an aspiring guitar picker listening every day to Santana's Moonflower album in the late 70s, I was totally in awe everytime I listened to Graham's drum solo on the track "Head, Hands & Feet". Almost made me swap my guitar for drums!
well....you won't believe this but for years he was with Paul Anka in the late nineties I saw him at Harrahs with Paul and we talked for hours about Garibaldi Shreve you name it!!!!! Hey......and check it out.......................ALL PAISTE SOUND CREATION!!!!!!!!!
Graham grew up London Ontario. When he was a kid he took some Lessons from Don Johnson who was the drummer for the Canadian Forces Central Band in Ottawa. Hes a highly regarded Pro and was pretty much 1st call in the city at the time. A few years back I was talking to Don about what was it like to have Graham as a young student. He told me that after a just a few lessons He had nothing more he could teach him!
I picked up Moonflower about the same time I picked up "Exit Stage Left" when I was a teenager. For the life of me I couldn't understand why everyone was raving over Neil Peart (and rightly so) but no one heard of Graham Lear. He was my biggest rock influence in my musical career. Fans of this should really check out his previous work with Gino Vannelli too. Thanks for posting this! :-)
So under-rated, yet such a legendary drummer... I noticed the drummerworld site still didn't have a profile for him. Let's hope it comes soon. I believe he plays with Paul Anka now.
Yes! I am glad somebody noticed that too. I used to go ape-sh*t over that drum solo on Moonflower. Soul Sacrifice, right? Graham Lear is one of the greatest rock drummers that no one has ever heard of. Most people don't even know that Neil Peart lists Graham Lear as an influence. How's THAT for an endorsement?
Amazing!!!
Sure looks like Mike Schreve!!

I love listening to Graham play the drums. He's one of those rock drummers that really plays with a lot of soul.
You are right about him being one of the best of the overlooked drummers of the past 30 years or so. That's too bad.

I first heard of him with Gino Vannelli, he is an awesome drummer, very precise and quick.
Never knew what happened after that, until now.
