i'm pondering over this up-and-coming pianist WHO still has a lot to learn. I was misleaded into thinking Grosvenor was a very intelligent young pianist. however. if you notice properly he doesn't know how to conduct an interview. when he says " i get lost in my playing" (or something like that) it's trying to hide his inadequacy at handling live performance. look at (if you search benjamin grosvenor) you'll realise that that BBC Final performance of Scarlatti sonata in D minor.
I actually think he is not just good in piano but really good in music, I actually think even some really good pianist now can't match his performance.
Absolutely good. Excellent control of the sound, good interpretation, sensitivity, clearness, a little bit of heart; we will heard a lot in the future of him.
This is an interpretation not at the level of a child, but adequate to a teenager of 16-17 year old with a lot of talent.
Of course in the DMinor sonata he's not Michelangeli, but if you look at his soft face of child...
fantastic.
A musician, not a trained parrto like some on youtube.
Wasn't 'The Lark' just magnificent. Had someone played this to me without video I would have guessed it was Horowitz, Ashkenazy, anyone but a 12 year old boy. He is simply outstanding. xXx
When Benjamin Grosvenor walked on to that stage nearly four years ago and struck his first note I was completely captivated. He spoke directly to me in a way that is exceedingly rare. Here is a young man of stupendous talent and commanding spirituality who should have won the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest outright. His star shone the brightest of all.
He's such a musically mature lad for his age, and I imagine he's even better now than he was! I think he should have won instead of Benedetti, although I can understand why she won and not him, perhaps age came into it, because he could try again if he wanted to
Can you tell me the name of the second sonata played by Ben there? I fell in love with the ending of that piece. That was the excerpt I heard at the end of the BBC program "Imagine... Being a Concert Pianist".
i know this boy.. when i was about 12 or 13, i came joint first at a piano competition with him. that was before he entered the bbc young musician and became all famous of course lol~
Bravo Ben! Are you concertizing much at the moment or is school the priorty for now??
Anyone got videos of some of the other finalists?? Two of my teachers had students in the final that year but my copies got chewed in the video machine
haha, i don't think school is his priority. i think i remember hearing that he only did about two days of school a week, or something. he had a lot of time off for practising.
This child is very talented i must say. My question is just, how is able to memorize such difficult pieces, does he practice alot or is there a techniqu?
On piano, it's actually not very difficult to memorize pieces. The hard part is being able to play the notes so well that expression can come through, which is at the heart of any performance.
Try memorizing when learning the piece for the first time. Break the piece into small sections. Memorize a section before pracitising it and the repetition during practice should help reinforce memory. Do this with each section.
By the time you need to have a memorized you have played it over and over and over, hundreds of times. The memory just comes to you. Some people memorize differently, but that is my experience.

He's the most amazing child prodigy I've seen since Evgeny Kissin. I'm happy to see him play Scarlatti - and it was quite good!

the second piece is sonata k27 L.449.
I'm learning it at the minute, it's fun.
Michelangeli is on youtube playing it, have a look.

He is very good for his age =)
It did sound a bit flat, but he surely has potential to go far in his musical career.

Ben gave a concert for the Billy Mayerl Society when he was about 10 it was wonderful. His CD 'Ben at 10' was quite remarkable too.

It's called The Lark by Mily Balakirev.
GrandPatzer 4 years ago
While searching on the internet I found out that The Lark is actually Mikhail Glinka's. Now I'm confused.
lukfraiha 4 years ago
It's by Glinka. Transcribed for the piano by Balakirev.
barnold81 4 years ago 2
I dont think what your talking about is a sonata, it's balakirev's "the lark"
robbiethe3rd 4 years ago
Yeah, you're right. I heard the lady say the kid would play 2 sonatas by Scarlatti. I thought the Lark was one of them..
GrandPatzer 4 years ago
He fist played scarlatti's "Sonata in D minor", then he played "sonata in B minor" and then finally "the Lark"

In my opinion Bach is very hard to memorize because there's no melody it's mostly harmony.
lukfraiha 4 years ago
memorizing...easy??
eh, i guess people with good memory can do it easily and quickly. my question is- HOW???
Memory is what is keeping me behind. I cant memorize anything well enough to be extremely confident with it.
