No, the Picts were the original inhabitants at least back when the Romans tried to invade! The Scots came to the west coast around 400AD, and for centuries there were two kingdoms: The Picts & the Scots! Until they were unified by marriage!
They unified against the Vikings and drove them out of the isles too. The old kingdom of Scots included land back in Ulster, from whence the Scotti came! Frankly, it was a Gaelic kingdom, that covered the isles & mainland. Simple as that!

The Irish christianised the britons from a tiny tiny scottish island (cant remember the name) and educated them long before the arrival of the english/anglo-saxons from germany, denmark and norway. Iona is the name of the Island, just off Mull, where Colm Cille/ St. Columba from Donegal set up his monastery, and from where he did indeed set about Christianising the Picts & Britons. He was Irelands first missionary, and that tiny island of Iona became the centre of the Celtic Church for centuries after.
And btw, Ulster Gaelige as spoken here, is closer to the Gaidhlig of the Western Isles than standard Irish, which is based on Munster Gaelic. A clue to the ancient links!

Dont understand me wrong. This is a fine song. And it is one of the best version of the song i ever heard. Dick is great. And Luke´s version is great as well. BUT ... the 96. same version of the song just with different pictures is well meant but ... folks, it is enough. This is not the reason why youtube is alive.

The name Scotland comes from the North-East Ireland tribe/invaders called Scoti who settled and expanded out from what is now Ayrshire
