  • Makes your heart sing!

  • Give me lukes version anyday, not bad but tbh there's no competition here, anyone says different is obviously deaf.

  • Well, i must be deaf then! This is the definitive version of the song, bar none!

  • Scots originate from Irish settlers who moved over to the mainland! They amalgamated with the Picts and the Scottish nation was born! If you enjoy the music...it doesn't matter where you come from!!!

  • @Winterlightshadow

So Scots originate from Picts AND Irish then :)

Seriously,Scotlands people are made up of many different peoples.

Bretons,Anglo-Saxons,Norse also contribute to our make up

The name Scotland comes from the North-East Ireland tribe/invaders called Scoti who settled and expanded out from what is now Ayrshire

  • @wifeoffred

No, the Picts were the original inhabitants at least back when the Romans tried to invade! The Scots came to the west coast around 400AD, and for centuries there were two kingdoms: The Picts & the Scots! Until they were unified by marriage!

They unified against the Vikings and drove them out of the isles too. The old kingdom of Scots included land back in Ulster, from whence the Scotti came! Frankly, it was a Gaelic kingdom, that covered the isles & mainland. Simple as that!

  • @wifeoffred

not exactly chara, the irish (and ireland) was called Eirne and Irish OR Scotti / scottish, by the romans etc So the irish went to scotland and founded a kingdom called dal riata. The Irish christianised the britons from a tiny tiny scottish island (cant remember the name) and educated them long before the arrival of the english/anglo-saxons from germany, denmark and norway. Donegal raymie is right. The scottish langauege was the exact same as irish till 16 centuary

  • @Thuglordrpt

Iona is the name of the Island, just off Mull, where Colm Cille/ St. Columba from Donegal set up his monastery, and from where he did indeed set about Christianising the Picts & Britons. He was Irelands first missionary, and that tiny island of Iona became the centre of the Celtic Church for centuries after.

And btw, Ulster Gaelige as spoken here, is closer to the Gaidhlig of the Western Isles than standard Irish, which is based on Munster Gaelic. A clue to the ancient links!

  • @Thuglordrpt

When you say "scottish language" I think you mean only Gaelic in the Western Isles and remote Highlands of Scotland. Most of Scotland were probably speaking another language by this stage i.e.Scots and/or English.

  • My grandad was English. Does that make me a 3/4 Scot?

  • No. But it doesn't matter, he was only pointing out the truth that the "Scoti" came from Ireland and the Picts, like the Britons/Welsh are native to the "mainland" of GB.

It's not important pal, just about a good song, well sung! Enjoy!

  • Great pics with by far the best version of this song! Let us Irish just admit, that it's the definitive version of this beautiful song, sung by a half-Scot and written by an English couple?

    Enough!

  • lovely...

  • absolutely beautiful. Thank you !

  • Dont understand me wrong. This is a fine song. And it is one of the best version of the song i ever heard. Dick is great. And Luke´s version is great as well. BUT ... the 96. same version of the song just with different pictures is well meant but ... folks, it is enough. This is not the reason why youtube is alive.

  • Yer only man for this song.Mighty version. The best in my ears. Great post Elfman.

  • Lovely song indeed. I'm not familiar with Dick Gaughan but I'm going to check him out!

  • nice song, beautiful photography.
