I saw Glenn at this production at the Shubert in LA. I was mesmerized and I must say that Glenn Close really brought such depth to Norma Desmond in her portrayal. She really captured her character. While some criticized her singing, I thought it was very good and surprisingly, very appropriate for this role. Norma is both forceful and fragile, just the way Glenn delivered her songs. I can't imaginine anyone else playing Norma this well. (I've seen Petula Clark also in this role.)
@damages79 Her vocal delivery of this part was much debated. She never quite managed to blend the registers. It was either fully belted chest voice (and quite strong) or pure head voice, like in most of this first song. The trouble was that she could only take the chest voice up to a certain point. Beyond that she had to resort to head voice which for most of the songs was a bit of a shortcoming since at times it sounded a bit like jodeling. However I still think she did an amazing job.
I absolutely adore her acting throughout the whole song but my favourite has to be right at the end when she waits for the applause to end, treating it as the physical manifestation of her "people in the dark". Haha... The audience is somewhat kinda really "in the dark" literally lol. Amazing acting. Gotta love her. =]
I love her in this role. I'm glad she was recast over Patti, and I'm a HUGE LuPone fan too! I wish they did a concert version of this becasue the music is just so damn good. Forget the elaborate sets, the book and score can hold themselves up! Love it!
I wish someone would post the finale with Glenn!

Saw her 3 times in LA, absolutely mesmerising! The Gloria. Swanson masterpiece is the standard.
But I must say Glenn Close brought such depth to this fragile Norma Desmond I could have continued to see it repeatedly.
Thanks for posting

I've seen "Sunset" three times. Close was by far the best Norma. Thanks for the footage. It brings back some very fond memories...

Saw her do this role in NY and was blown away. She owns this role and I hope when the movie is done that she is cast as Norma!

My parents got to see the LA cast with her! I'm so jealous of them.

There were two concert versions in Australia and one in Ireland back in 2004/2005.
