Great stuff! One thing: if you're going to vacuum seal your Bic lighter make sure that the gas valve doesn't open when the bag tightens down around it. I'd recommend either a case that you can insert a Bic into or a childproof version, if you can still find them. The childproof ones are easily rendered "unsafe" with a knife, or your teeth in a pinch.
I might have missed it, but a button compass or larger would be useful in this type of kit. Nice assembly of gear, I took some things from it and thanks for the video!
@USNERDOC Thanks for the great idea! Hope you don't mind me stealing it and making a video of my own and posting it! Seriously, thanks for the great inspiration, I have put many of your ideas into use.
@CADustin - you bring up some great points about butane lighters. I look at them this way, if they work, great and I'm good to go, if they don't work I move on to other layers of fire staring capabilities. Many thanks for the input and support!
One possible way of preventing the Bic's from losing fuel due to the switch being hit would be to use a small zip tie around and under the switch preventing it from going into the "on" position. Might work, might not, worth trying?
@ThePracticalPatriot - good idea. I need to break that kit open and formally check the lighter. So far it seems to be holding well bit I would hate a surprise when the need comes to count on the lighter.
This is a great idea to create a vacuum in the zip lock bags with my Food Saver vacuum sealer. I was at a loss on how to do this in the past, but after watching your video...I now have the solution.
Another great video. 5 Stars. Going to add a vacuum sealer and heat sealer to my list. Any suggestions on what to look for in a decent package that won't break the bank?
Glad you tried what we discussed about the vacuum packed lighter, as we've discussed in our pm exchange. Have you discovered any leakage? I've tried 6 mini BICs six large BICs and a two pairs of discount unbranded lighters.
the result is : Mini Bics = 1 leaked inside the vacuum pack, the large BICs = 2 leaked because of the pressure on the gas switch, and on the 12 low cost = 6 leaked, 4 of one pack 2 of the other.
I am currently running the same supplemented survival kit from adventure medical, with some other gear. I have not settled on a water filtration system as of yet. Just tablets till i decide. I can always boil. Thanks DOC
Great vid as always. One thing I recently tested out was to use my kit in cold conditions. The main problem I had was opening my vac packs. Even with the notch in the side it was very hard to open with cold hands. Now I have added large tabs of folded over tape above and below the notch in the bags to help grip with cold hands. Like you have for the zipper on the bag.
Laughing at all the good ribbing you've received on vacuum sealing. It's a concept that works great at waterproofing and space saving. A few months ago I started using the aloksak bags so I've got to stick to that method for a while. really great video Doc!
Great review, the first I've seen with all of the contents being waterproofed in vacuum sealed bags. What brand of vacuum sealer do you use? Looks like it really does the job. I'd like to hear your thoughts on why you selected it.
I think they are all likely very comparable. My wife got this one for me because she noticed I was "vacuum bagging everything in sight" with the portable rechargeable FoodSaver version.
Yes, cut up the credit cards. This survival stuff does get expensive. But, if the time ever comes, it'll be money well spent! Better to have and not need, rather than need and not have. At least that's what I tell my wife and myself for that matter!
I know I don't need to say this, but awesome job again Doc.
Ah . . . great minds do think a like! If you watch carefully (or look on the PDF) an Adventure Medical Kits pocket survival pak by Doug Ritter in in my kit. I agree it is a great piece of gear designed by one of the experts. Thanks for watching my friend!
Great Vid DOC. I know you have a hand held vacumm sealer that you use. Whats the big one i saw in one of your vids. I am looking to buy but i want a quality product.
Great comment and insight. I have gotten some PMs regarding the bag . . . something which I thought was pretty standard. Someone asked if I would do some vids demonstrating how the components work. I am happy to do that next time I'm out in the woods.
I'll raise the ante there my friend . . . I get home from a long mountain drive and there is a cool comment from the USFRAME Crew . . . awesome. Thanks!
Just a few questions: have you ever tested this kit just to see how it works out in practice? Would love to see vid on that..
Also: could you elaborate a bit about what kind of water you would or would not try to use? What are the limits of this kind of water purification process?
What should you look (out) for when trying to find a water source?
Luckily I've never needed to use this kit. likely since it is always with me. I'm sure I would be in a situation of need should I leave it at home . . . just the way Mr Murphy works!
I will do a more detailed vid talking about the water component . . . perhaps take it out in the field and put it to use.
Thank you sir! For taking the time and effort to share your ideas and knowledge.
Being an IT man, I believe firmly in redundancy and backups.
But there is other essential thing that I believe in, and that is testing.
You can backup as much as you want but if you never test if restoring a backup actually works (kinda like field testing) you never know if you can depend on it.
I am really looking forward to some hands-on experience. Can you just use a puddle of water? Rain water?
Its really a small world, Survival Resources is in Hyde Park, NY. That's less than 15 miles away. I have purchased products from them in the past. They are a decent company to do business with. Only I have to pay NYS sales tax , you probably don't. As always a great video, Thanks.
You are definitely organized and the king of the vacuum sealer > I see why NutnFancy favors you. Great stuff DOC. I have allot of catching up to do with your videos
Hey Doc, cool kit, by the way thats a coll looking watch you have there, have seen all ypour videos but its the first time I have noticed it, perhaps a review?

Doc what type of vacuum sealer do you uses? Outstanding video!

I'm assuming you expect to have a knife or some other way to get that packaging open? Or the ziptie off, if you put one on your lighter.

Doc, have you tried opening those vacuum bags with wet, cold hands?
Just asking because I've had to deal with something that looked similar out on an exercise and it was like impossible without a knife...

I will test it this weekend when I am off work. Alternatively you could use a bag and seal without a vacuum. I will keep you posted!

The lighters do not need to be sealed. When they get wet, blow on it for 5 minutes and they will work again.
