Hi, would you be interested in letting me use this footage for my documentary I'm making for college about uk severe weather, please get back to me I'm desperate for footage cheers. email- fallenskyeluke@aol.com
I just out ran the f-5 that hit Joplin when i was driving through it was scary and HUGE so yeah that was the 4th tornado i have seen in my life but the biggest
Wow. Cool. I saw one way back in the 80s down in Folkestone on the S/E coast, it was a skinny twisty waterspout about 400mtrs off shore and died off when it moved over the harbour area. And no one got a picture of it! Doh!
I don't think that was a tornado, it looked like a funnel cloud cos it didn't seem like there was any contact with the ground, no debris cloud either. Might be wrong tho. Either way, very cool, wish I could see something like that!
Hmm, spongersurfer said 'per [s]quare mile', so tornado alley in america may have a greater number of tornadoes in total, but over a much greater area of land than tornadoes in the UK.
i live in england and since i was born theres been about 10.... so you flopped lol. ive neva even seen 1 thats why when im older i wana go to oklahoma and live there till i see and record an F5
now why can't tornados hit in the manchester/stockport area -.- one of the things i wanna see before i die is a tornado -.- then again i think i saw one when i was 5 or it might of been me......i dunno
i saw a funnel cloud form over the river tay beside Dundee was amazing to watch and there was a small tornado that struck the sidlaws just north of dundee..........theyre amazing things
i've seen a tornado and felt an earthquake in england! england. boring? no. thank the lord that our country and people don't have to experience the monsters they get across the pond.
F2 is the strongest messured in the Uk in the last 10 years In the US they get over F3 a few times a year. Had two funnel clouds in Lancashire England this week had one near my town a year ago too that touched down and relocated a shed.
Tornadoes in the U.S are worse because of things such as the gulf of Mexico and you have a warmer climate than Britain. But, Britain has more tornadoes per sq mile than the U.S because of our position on the planet. (They are a lot weaker and scientists claim that most go unreported)
Simple answer: most of the time yes! You don't take shelter in your own home you drive away because they will level the structure and toss you miles away like a rag toll.
The tornadoes here in the US tend to be so horrible, and do so much damage, we never used to hear about the twisters you all get - as if they didn't happen. Until recently, I truly thought you were lucky, and didn't get them in the UK. Well, I don't think a tornado is anything to brag about, whatever their number or their strength! They are terrifying, and I'd be happy to move to any place that never gets them - only I don't think such a place exists on earth!
to us brits, our cute little weather patterns and land movements are something to love. for some reason we feel the need to brag because the uk is verry stable and uneventfull. 2007s tornadoes were cool and the earthquake we had a few weeks ago got everyone exited about it, even the radio!
Ah, I see what you mean, since you've mentioned earthquakes. Where I live we only get mild ones, and rarely. They don't scare me the way they should, because they don't do the kind of damage that happens in Japan or Chile or California. The little temblors we get here in Michigan are just conversation pieces, you might say.
Yeah, we don't even get to hear things that are of vital interest to the USA - unless it also serves the interest of big corporations that want to rule the world, starting right here. Mostly we get distraction stories, like which celebrity is losing custody of her/his kids, and who's sleeping with whom. Important stuff like that. 8/
That is true, but never wish that the type of tornadoes that hit the US hit London because it would make hurricane Katrina in NO look like a sun shower.
It's all well and good watching them on video, but you cannot even begin to imagine the sense of awe when you come round a corner in Chatsworth in your car and see one 250m on the hill. Absolutely amazing.
i thought funnels are the tornado and the cloud around it is just debre of dirt and objects it picks up.
----------Any Whoo----
English houses can stand tornados well sorta way we build our house's to who say why dont U.S.A or other places do it because our houses are built to keep the cold out and hot countrys like U.S.A need build so heat can escape.
England gets small little ones, America gets em of all sizes and France/Belgium/Netherlands area once reported the largest Twister seen in Europe as an F-5. (Strange for the area)
I saw this exact same funnel and luckily enough the next day(18th august) we had another in the same area but nearer to warwick. I've got some photos of it so i might upload them onto a vid for everyone to see!
Thats not a Tornado, its a type of cloud formation that looks like a Tornado called a Funnel Cloud. Made the same way but doesn't have the energy or micro-climate to reach the ground and create a tornado, so kinda less scary.
I had to drive like a maniac to take this video as I wanted to film it as it was travelling along the ground but I didnt have time to catch it unfortunately
There was one in 1996, it was an F2. Didn't do much damage, but it was on the ground for about half an hour. It was a finnel tornado which eventually turned into a rope. I think no one was injured or dead.
Those figures are way off! We get on average a few hundred funnel clouds every year, but only around 33 tornadoes anually, that's one every eleven days. But yes, we do get more than anywhere else in the world, considering landmass. USA would need an average of 1255 a year to get more than the UK.
A funnel cloud becomes a tornado if (1) it touches the ground or (2) a debris/dust cloud is visible beneath it. If neither happens, it's just a funnel cloud.
Good video, shame it was so short. Has anyone got anymore vid's of UK twisters, especially the Keynsham/ Bristol funnelcloud from last summer, it was amazing.
Twisters in uk,cool, we have them here in -Norway too.usually 100-1000 twisters pr year.. One actually hit in oslo last summer.. hehe F1-F2..some dammage on houses and powerlines and barns
i saw two tornado's in essex england in 1996. They were right over our house bout never touched down thankfully. It was quite scary and i was shouting at my dad to get in the car and drive away. Also i had just seen the movie twister.
that was actually a funnel cloud, its only a tornado if it touches the ground. But good footage anyways. Oh and the UK has just as many tornados per square mile as the USA. Just being that the UK is smaller we don't witness them, but we have quite a few water spouts every year and over 500 funnel clouds per year
I wish there were but the only ones I've found to date are this one and a video of one at night where you can hear it passing by closely (link in my favourites). If you know of any more I'd love to hear about it! :-)
One of my ambitions in life is to see a tornado. And it's ironic that although 3 have hit where I live I didn't see a single one! The most I've seen is the funnel forming but it dissipated well before touchdown. Awesome video though, I wish I could have been there.

Tornadoes aren't that rare in the UK, we have over 10 thousand a year according to some programme I watched, only 85% of them never touch the ground.
