i remember this song. it was played in a lot of chinese tv series in the 80's and 90's, if you watch the legend of the condor hero you hear it quite often
My wife and I went to Hong Kong a few years ago (she was my girlfriend back then) and we stopped by one of the big music stores there on HK Island. I had always wanted to see these instruments close up.
These things are massive! They look big in the clips, but you have no idea how big they are till you try and A- lift one and B- stand it up and stand next to it. The owner knew I was not going to buy, but let me handle the instruments all the same once he knew I was interested.
I so want to play one of these now! It's like a piano, but with the combined hand technique of a guitar and a tonal range covering way more than any standard western instruments like guitars and pianos and such since you can bend every note pretty much up an octave it seems. Nice!
That's a funny way to put it. An individual artist will go all out to be herself...would be care less about from what culture/tradition she draws her inspiration. The only tradition worth keeping is innovation. Chaozhou school was not formed in one day or by one individual, then who has the authority to define what is and what is not tradition. I am just enjoying this piece, and let others sort it out in a hundred years.
Wondering if it makes a difference if she were to wear green.
I hate to rain on your parade mudslinger but as a harper who's studied in the Irish tradition, I have to say that following a tradition is nothing to scoff at... individual artisits come and go, no matter how special they seem at the time, but traditions last for centuries.... never the less its a fabulous video and i can't understand what's wrong with it.
Too many deleted posts in between makes my comment seem out of context. Glad you enjoy this piece as some think this is not "traditional" therefore "inferior"... Tradition lasts isn't simply because it is tradition... individual artists push its boundries over time...it is an ongoing develpment.
Do you live in a city with a Chinatown? I live near LA and I've found the best method is to drive until you can't read the signs and then shop in those stores. You can get all kinds of cool stuff, even Lao Fu Zi comics.
wo hen xi huan zhe ge yin yue, mei ciwo ting dao wo hen gao xing (I love this piece of music, every time i hear this music i am happy) =) have fun learning asian culture guys, good wishes to all
yes - traditionally the instrument had strings made of silk, and would be played with fingernails. Modern ones are steel, so require artificial 'nails' in order to play.
This really brings out the mellow side to me. I normally listen to rock music, but I could listen to this for hours. so gorgeous and relaxing. just awesome.
As mentioned in the title, the instrument is called "guzheng" (古箏). It is an ancient Chinese zither (not to be confused with quqin (古琴), a bridge-less Chinese zither even more ancient). Guzheng is the parent instrument of the Japanese "koto". Wikpedia to learn all about it.
Perfectly beautiful music from perhaps the greatest culture in the history of the world (I mean the ancient China). Thank you.

leave japan out of this... Japanese instruments has nothing to do with this
Bomberboy777 3 years ago 3
um, on the contrary, Japanese culture in many ways derives from aspects of ancient Chinese culture. I'm not saying there aren't any differences.
But in any case, the koto almost certainly derives from the guzheng, and the biwa from the pipa (the Tang dynasty form of it, anyways).
bidufu 3 years ago 37
Actually, in the Song dynasty, many of the aspects of Chinese culture moved to Japan, such as martial arts and oragami.
