  • I had the good fortune to see and hear Hilary Hahn and Valentina Lisitsa at the Chicago Symphony Hall last October 2011. My first classical concert. Both ladies were so charming

and dazzling with their talents. What fine examples of musicianship dedication to craft and elegance.

  • kent nagano is the conductor? didn't expect that.

  • Nobody clapped! How rude.

    ;)

  • @blogegog They're not supposed to clap between movements

  • @andrewlovesminecraft I was just messing around :). Congrats on being in love with Minnie Craft! I bet she loves you back.

  • This version is by far my favorite. So clean and soul fulfilling.

  • The conductor is not Natalie Zhu, Ms Zhu is a pianist & not appear in this performance.

  • bravísimo

  • beautiful piece..... straight from the soul

  • I'd cry if I have to learn this piece. Insanely difficult rhythmically and lyrically.

  • @itsGratisFreebies dont worry, the second movement is semi-easy, just tough to play it as good as hahn though. however, the first movement is a challenge, though not impossible for an adept to learn... just takes time.

  • the conductor's name is natalie?

  • which orchestra is it? and what does Natalie Zhou have to do with this???

  • is that theatre in Berlin?

  • WO und WANN fand diese Wunder-Aufführung statt ?

    Bravo !!!!

  • Where's Natalie Zhu? The conductor, despite being Asian like Natalie Zhu, is not Natalie Zhu. His name is Kent Nagano.

  • The conductor is not Seiji Ozawa.. it is Kent Nagano. Seiji hasn't looked that young since before Hilary started playing the violin

  • Is the conductor named Natalie Zhu?

  • @TitinioBayagbag Good question! I'm here because I was looking for something by Natalie Zhu. She is a wonderful pianist who was in school with Hilary and they toured together for awhile. I don't know why her name is on this upload, download, whatever. Evidently it is a mistake.

  • Passion, music in the heart, you can see it and feel her music, SMS

  • Masterpiece of artistic expression, of both composer and performer.

  • Hilary needs to record this. now. Perhaps paired with Prokofiev? She also plays that piece brilliantly.

  • I could listen to her play all day. It's just an inspiration to hear and this piece is just lovely.

  • Where is Natalie Zhu?

  • This piece suits Hilary's style so well. In my opinion, it's the best performance of this concerto. Wonderful singing and clear tone.

  • What a truly great romantic violin concerto so beautifully performed by Hilary Hahn.

    Wonderful.

    Harry E W Smith, E.D., A.D.M.

  • What a superb romantic violin concerto and so well performed.

    Harry E W Smith, E.D., A.D.M.

  • What a magnificent romantic violin concerto that is so musically performed by

Hilary Hahn. One of my favourite Violin concertos.

    Harry E W Smith, E.D., A.D.M.

  • Erich Wolfgang Korngold considerado como uno de los pioneros en el genero BSB...

  • I'm going to go a concerto in Santory Hall,Tokyo, and listen this piece today!!!!!!

    I am so excited!!!!!!!

  • kid can sure play that damn fiddle can't she?

  • @LFD254 violin*

  • wow :)

  • WAY TOO REMASTERED!!!!!!

  • Korngold and Hahn - I love it.

  • I have never seen someone sway like that while playing the violin.

  • @1disturbia1 On another note, I read some of the comments below. Something about her pitch and she being oout of tune. I am still developing my ear for music, I have only just started playing myself (although I started with the piano to get a bases on music before I go on to the violin), but I did not really hear anything that seemed out of place. The piece was beautiful.

  • also, she plays so effortlessly it's amazing. like, hey ima just play this now, cuz i can. no prob. XD

  • maybe that one guy who commented on her intonation is tone deaf? =/

  • I MET HER

  • damn. that was awesome.

  • HEY! Natalie Zhu is a pianist! This is Kent Nagano conducting!

  • amazing sound!

  • she is very boring.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow...I have one of her CD's and I LOVE it!!! She has no sheet music...she memorized it?! And didn't mess up? That takes epic skill, right there.

  • fk off im not a pervert

  • am i imagining it or r those boobs?

  • fantastische Violinistin!!!

  • hilary hahn knows how to bring out the sweet colors of this piece! ^ ^

  • Hilary Hahn plays Korngold Violin Concerto mov.1 she played so beautifully and she dident make one mestake .......

about as close to perfection as it gets ..............but it still sounded musical and unike

only very few people could ever play like that

  • I'm not even a violin player and i can tell this girl is very talented.

  • VERY late Viennese! Despite Korngold coinciding more with the radical period of the second Viennese school. But very typical Korngold, this could so easily be from one of his masterful movie scores.

  • @dewarfinch1 Each movement of this piece is based on a different one of his movie scores! They are all so beautiful.

  • @dewarfinch1 Each movement in this piece is based on a different one of his movie scores. They are all so beautiful.

  • is the conductor Kent Nagano ??

  • Youtube allows composers like Korngold, not much known, and less appreciated, to reach a wider audience. Bravo!

  • Hilary Hahn carries the soul of David Oistrakh within her.

  • Bravo! (claps)

multiply this for the numbers of thumbs up and let's form an giant applause

  • I never knew Kornholio wrote a violin concerto. Heh, heh, heh... Uh huh huh huh...

  • @jdbrown371 Like his comment if you get the reference.

  • Appliqué et propre,la magie en moins.

  • stunning! she plays it sooooo beautifully!

  • et j'allais oublier GENIAL

  • Ravissant - Magnifique - Excellent - Merveilleux - Resplendissant

  • An emotive piece sublimely played.

  • I would really enjoy if she played this in my living room. It's a bit cluttered at the moment but i'd straighten up

  • this rendition may trump sibelius for me. and that's saying something. sooo excited to play this this year once i finish vieuxtemps 5!

  • The description says that Natalie Zhu is in the recording...I'm so confused!

Oh well, beautiful performance in any case! I had never listened to Korngold before, fell in love with this instantly! Following Hilary Hahn on YouTube has introduced me to new composers that I wouldn't have found otherwise. I am very grateful for her playing, and thanks for uploading! :)

  • I believe that is Seiji Ozawa conducting.

  • @gaylealstrom Nope! Kent Nagano.

  • @pfitzner1 thanks for the correction.

  • Korngold is so underrated.

  • @MrAlexKeaton Herrmann and Williams too. Herrmann's symphony has onl about 1.000 views, although it is one of the greatest symphony I have ever heard. And Williams' concert works are almost unknown, although they are greater than his film scores.

I think the greatest composers of the XXth century are those who are underrated.

  • @MrAlexKeaton

I can only agree with you...

  • Beautiful. This is at the Philharmonie in Berlin, but it's not the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra .. what Orchestra and what year was this?

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful.

  • she plays every note so clearly and in tune!!

  • dead...

  • The most beautiful Violin Concerto of the 20th century. Many composers made their way by writing music for movies, this Prokofiev and Barber stand out as particularly melodic and soulful.

  • @tomestubbs As much as I love this concerto, I'd have to say the Sibelius is bar none the most beautiful 20th century violin concerto. :O

  • @malikrox From what I've heard so far it is beautiful. Thanks for leading me in that direction.

  • Who is directing anybody knows?

  • @CRDenuncia

    Kent Nagano

  • thanks for uploading, it's one of my favorite works... i hadn't heard her version until now. I love the Heifetz version.

  • Normally I am bored to tears listening to music written in this era. But is is FANTASTIC.

I've never even heard of Korngold. Now I need to find out more about him.

  • @GaleoDeus Korngold is one of John Williams largest influences.

  • mmmm....the beginning is pure lusciousness.

hilary hahn's my fave violinist out there.

  • Actually it is perhaps just a tad too slow.

  • Hilary is absolutely fantastic. For another great rendition of the piece try James Ehnes. He is fabulous as well. Probably not a recording on youtube but well worth the purchase on itunes.

  • @jraziru i own that recording. it's soooooo good. i second everyone checking out his rendition.

  • To understand HH interpretation one needs to have a very trained ear and keen sense of music. One needs to know the intricacy of the Austrian musical tradition, and when you know this all, you can appreciate this amazing rendition. Bravo!

  • Kjviolin2,I agree. This is a very romantic piece and I think Hahn, not denying she is a wonderful violinist,is a cold one.I prefer more passionate Shaham or Mutter renditions,

  • I love her sound! Hilary Hahn is really great. Don't listen to Anne Sophie! She's a commercial violin artist and not as good as Hilary.

  • how about Heifetz if you want to really hear it...

  • dry and emotionless......just like a robot...listen to Anne Sophie.....its sounds like a completely different piece...

  • Anne Sophie Mutter is not as good as Hillary Hahn, sorry, Anne Sophie is one of the worst well-known violin artists.

  • Mutter strays too much from the written score. It's one thing to have artistic interpretation and it's another thing to improvise or alter the composers intention. I agree, Anne Sophie is way down on my list of best.

  • This is the absolute best performance of the Korngold that I have ever heard. A cute little girl with a wonderful violin talent. Bravo! The symphony accompanies wonderfully. And the recording is very clear and full. One of my favorite vids for sure.

  • I would give you thumbs up ten times if I could. :)

  • love love love!

  • Lucky girl has great hands for playing the violin. I love playing, but my finger's are not violinist's fingers. Sigh.

    Beautiful music, thanks for shairng!

  • All I can say is WOW!

  • where was made this video?

  • Watching and listening to Hilary is like coming home.

  • Is that Kent Nagano conducting?

  • I wonder if this is her own fingering? She seems too have a very strong pinky . I wonder if other violinist would use 4th finger instead of 5 in some passages as Hahn does.

  • i don't know about the fingering but she does have a very strong pinky.

  • you must be a pianist - the violinist pinky *is* the 4th finger. many fiddlers use their 3rd (your 4th) finger for sustained high notes - it's longer, and a little stronger, generally. personally, i prefer using my 4th up high, like HH.

  • Thanks for that info. You're right, the thumb doesn't count as "1" for the violinist.

  • @cornel999 I'm a trumpeter, and when I read about your 4th finger, I thought "huh"? :)

  • why dont you care about the music???

  • Well, I for one care about the music. It's one of my favorites. And it's well played by Hahn. But comments about music in general and violin playing specifically is not off topic.

  • @goodchessactor I agree, she kinda has that heifetz-like long-and-strong pinky,,,

    lucky her....

  • Her playing is often so flawless that you would think that she just stands there like a robot, but she actually is quite fluid and allows her body a very wide range of motion. Very enviable. Her sensibilities are a little too cold for my liking in this particular concerto, though.

  • This is what I like best about You Tube - discovering great works like this concerto played by a consummate soloist like Hahn.

  • Comment removed

  • She plays this piece so feminine... it´s funny, but nice. :) I love this concerto.

  • what hall is this?

  • I think it's the Philharmonie, in Berlin

  • thanks. :)

  • Yes I think so too. You can watch Gil Shaham playing there as well.

  • Hilary Hahn always has perfection in her playing!

  • Her playing is good

but the filming is bad. The angles keep changing and I get annoyed.

  • Immaculate! Clean, tonally perfect and exquisitely performed. Bravo!

  • So refreshing to see no histrionics, no narcissism. Just a lovely, clean and soulful sound, perfect intonation but also sensitive. This woman is born to play the violin. If only non-violinists could understand the skill and devotion that goes into playing this so effortlessly.

  • @fingerhorn4 Her intonation is sometimes questionable, though.

  • @Centigonos This remark is, i'm sorry to say so, Little redicilous, the probably best violinist the world. Simply perfect ant very touching

  • @solbriller1 Just open you ears. Hahn is brilliant, that's just out of the question, but she's not perfect. Nobody is.

  • @Centigonos wth?? you're talking about this clip of the korngold concerto by hilary hahn, right? i cant detect any flaw in her intonation!

  • @Centigonos Excuse me, but that's just plain silly. Hilary Hahn's intonation is as close to flawless as that of anyone who ever played the violin. Certainly everybody is entitled to an opinion, and you're entitled to yours, but we're talking abt. facts here, and facts are not debateable. Any bits of "questionable intonation" you imagine you are hearing - do you have perfect pitch? can you really judge that? because I do and I can - are hardly worth mentioning.

  • @assindiastignani "do you have perfect pitch? can you really judge that? because I do and I can" - I'm sure that you do have perfect pitch. You affirmed it on the internet, hence it has to be true.

  • @Centigonos Thank you for your trust. It's well founded. (If only life were always that easy...)

  • @assindiastignani To build on your point, this is the violin we're talking about, and we violinists don't deal with tempered pitch. There's a word for "questionable intonation", and it's called colour. I certainly don't have absolute pitch, but her intonation is perfectly fitting with the moods of the piece to my ear.

  • @malikrox Absolutely!! One thing of which most modern violinists avail themselves (in my opinion) far too little: the concept of intonation as an aspect of the musicality per se. Sometimes a leading tone just has to be higher, even if it's "too" high, or you vibrate more to the low side of the pitch, for interpretation.Sometimes you just have to go higher to be heard, because the orch. is too loud.Heifetz, Oistrakh and Stern are for me the masters. Of the modern violinists, Hahn & Jansen.

  • Magnificent!

  • she is just absolutely a thrill to watch. its so effortless, like the the violin is literally her normal speaking voice. its just amazing. she is...an incredible talent.

  • holy shiiit.....

  • Miraculous!

  • I believe this is Montreal Symphony Orchestra?

  • So pure, so clean sounding.

  • This is my favorite recording of this piece. The sound is pure, the movement is easy, not harsh... just perfect.

As contrast, Anne-Sophie Mutter sounds like a record playing too fast with an angry bumble bee in the room. This is much much better.

  • Gil Shaham also plays this very well. His recording is on youtube also, and I originally liked this one the best, but now I think his is my favorite.

  • 0_0 wow

that section at 5:00--she really tears that up.

  • well played

  • nice piece...

    well done...

  • Walt Disney Hall ... I saw her here!

  • Wonderful playing, but compare this to Gil Shaham's recording and you see how little body to the sound Hillary gets.

  • Hilary has a very pure sound to her playing though. Maybe it's just my preference, but I like that focused sound more than other recordings than I have heard. It's also very clean.

  • i noticed that too...

her sound is too focused all the time.

the beginning of this should be rich.

    but she's good. no doubt.

  • how difficult is this concerto compared to other popular violin concerti

  • I remember hearing that it was quite a complicated both technically and musically. I't s a great piece though if you're considering playing it! I never get tired of listening to it! =)

  • I keep coming back to this Vid. I dont know why.
