i feel something move. its not like a small lump. it feels like it has a ridge like one would find on a peech. is this just the natural feel of the thyroid????
Yes dr. Marie , she missed tracheal deviation test , she also forgot to put her hands on the patient head while examinning the lid lag sign ( von graeve sign )
when auscultating over the thyroid gland isn't the patients meant to hold their breath in end expiration? ....."hold your arms up like a chicken" - i'm so using that phrase! haha
This was most helpful with my revision. And that lady is more than welcome 2 examin me any day she was very professional...... and attractive ..... :)
By visually examining, and physically palpating the trachea and surrounding structures, I believe she did effectively check for swelling and tracheal deviations.
One question: She mentioned auscultating for thyroid bruits. What pathophysiology would that imply?
@mrcnblue the best thing is to confirm that there's no associated malignancy, and then you can control your overactive gland by means of medications as recommended by your doctor. :) eg beta blockers, possible antithyroid meds such as carbimazole or propriothyrouracil
From what i've seen on the internet the thyroid is a gland in the neck which releases hormones to control the rate of your metabolism and other bodily functions.
If it's over or underactive and so releases too much or too little of the hormones and one of the symptoms is panic attacks, anxiety and depression (these are symptoms of hyperthydroidism which is when its overactive) so i guess it could be worth talking to your doctor about it.
wow just googled this doctor and she was attacked by five people with her husband in new zealand, he needed reconstructive surgery and everything. hope he's okay now, it was like in 2006 but still.
think it's worthwhile mentioning to the patient to not move his head while his eyes follow your finger. also don't forget to wash hands before and after the examination. to ensure the patient doesn't use his arms in assisting to get up, ask him to fold his arms in front of his chest.
my Thyroid, I had a CT scan, and an ekg, and the doctor could find nothing wrong, the reason I went is because I shake a lot, in my arms, and hands and in my legs, but they could find nothing wrong, if anyone has any ideas on why or what i can do to stop the shaking, please post your comments
Does anybody in your family shake too? It might be something called benign familial tremor... It might be treatable with beta blockers if it's really affecting you.
Wow, that guy looks totally uncomfortable, apart from that fairly informative video.

a thyroid mass can compress one of the thyroid arteries... causing a bruit to be heard.
Another possibility is that the increased blood demand of the gland in hyperthyroid goiter can generate increased flow, causing a bruit to be heard.
skoolbui18 1 year ago
you didn't check for the relation between the swelling & the skin or surrounding structure or the tracheal deviation
