I like your cover. But what I really like is that little lead in riff. Any chance you could send me the tabs for that? Just those few notes right before you hit the A minor and start signing. I have been trying to do it watching you, but it does not sound right when I do it. Anyway, good job
Some suggest that Levon wrote this one. For starters The Band had fostered an aura of "equality" -- everyone contributed with no one member dominating. Beyond that, there's ample evidence that Robbie did indeed provide the lyrics and melodic framework. The others made the songs shine and performed them with absolute conviction, and it's a bit difficult to accept Levon as not being the author of this song. After all, Levon had lived out these themes, whereas Robbie merely wrote about them.
I originally clicked on this thinking that Robbie Robertson was doing a solo acoustic performance. I gave your version a chance though and was happy I did. You really do have a certain soul in your voice and your guitar playing was very solid too. Good luck w/ the new guitar and definitely post more stuff on youtube!
do you ever go to a singer songwriters night or anything? Stephen, you are really talented...your voice is so rich and unique. Superb Job...just might have become my new favorite!
Thanks Rachel; no I don't. I'd like to if I could find the time. You inspire me to write some orginals. I have a custom Martin HD-28 being made. Soon I'll have and and write some songs that ring in my heart. I appreciate your warmth.
Superb! nice heartfelt version. Bit more folksy than the original, am i right? like a small town localised version, sung down in the south in the months and years following the War. Excellent stuff. That song is both timeless and yet resolutely belongs to the Civil War era.
did you sing 'my brother before me' ? I always took it as his older brother 'my brother above me'.
It sounds like Rick Danko singing, (which is a compliment) haha
