For future making of Chinese Xiju videos I'd liek to know if anyone else agrees with using Xiju (theatrical performance), in place of opera. I say this because opera is an artform developed in the west and Chinese theatre was not inspired by opera but was developed in different areas of China. Instead of BeiJing opera, use Jingju. What are people's opinions on that topic?
This is Cantonese Yue opera (and not Yue opera), and this is a "ceremonial" 30 minutes scene usually performed on the opening nite of an opera season.
Are these actors for the season comming out, specific characters from one of the seasons productions, or does the ceremony itself have its own characters no matter what prodcutions are happening?
The latter (ie this is a standard ceremonial play for all opening nights), it is an episode from "Romance of The Three Kingdom" it also showcase the company's whole cast of main talents and the richness of its wardrobes. The 3rd general (from the right) is always taken up by the company's xiaosheng (male lead).
Do you mean the character in the light pink is the male lead? What episode is it from? I'm familiar with the San guo yan yi tales so I might know it. I did hear the words Shen Pei, I don't really understand what they are saying but my guess would be that this would be about the Battle of Guandu with Cao and Yuan since Shen Pei was a general under Yuan Shao. Is that correct?
I guess you are saying Yue 粤(广东)剧. Yes, i think they are speaking Cantonese when they are reciting.
Beautiful colors. Amazing, although the dialects and melodies are different, the musical instruments and the dance/movement styles are very similar to the other regional operas.
