there's a great article about how the use of "han" is being promoted by beijing, as a way to make chinese look like they're just 1 more happy ethnic group in cpc china's "harmonious" empire. instead of the long use of "chinese" to refer to chinese, by calling them "han" they become "han chinese" just like "uighur chinese" and "tibetan chinese".
