Maybe a collision happened if something unnaturally perturbed a normally smooth synchronized binary solar system return. Perhaps a returning solar system might have less than its regular number of planets if collisions happened upon solar returns (every 3600 years?) that were disrupted or hacked. Kuiper belt?
