  • See once we made things and everything......

  • hahaha awesome with german commentary

  • Sad that Mitchell can, heare and see this

  • Klasse Sound von einer hervorragenden Maschine.

    +++

  • bin von Formel 1 sound hier her gekommen keine ahnung mehr wie aber gut so

  • hahnweide is ein grund weniger nach duxford zu fliegen.

  • Thats what freedom sounds like.

  • Griffon had way more power than the merlin.Hence the 5 blade prop.

  • Stunning Sound!

  • OH WOW!

  • Did he say in German , this is the plane that kicked our asses !

  • the mk 19 didn't that have the griffin engine

  • @TheSteamdriver Im afraid to say yes it did! It had the same Griffon as fitted to the Mk XIV.

  • i didnt realise that something bred for war could look so beautiful and produce a sound like music to my ears.

  • A Long nosed RR Griffon engines Mk 19 in French markings according to the titles. Sound Ok and is fast, but the lesser powered Merlin is pure music. Achtung Spitfeuer indeed. Many thanks

  • @HarryAardvark This Spit is owned by a Frenchman, but the markings are typical RAF far east.

  • @Tony240Z Thank you Tony, that makes much more sense than my poor effort at translation. Best regards Harry

  • I'm half expecting the music from the film "Battle of Britain" to play in the background!

  • Isn't that still the best looking aircraft ever made...ever?

  • @blacktiger955i Well maybe, I do like the look of the Mustang also the Corsair.that in fighter planes, the best looking plane ever was the super connie.

  • @critchley3819 'I'm guessing that you're from the other side of the pond.

  • @blacktiger955i Im Aussie, I like to look at works of art in anything and the spitfire is one of them. I have a quite big list list of favourite man made things.

  • This Video Gives Me Wood.

  • Give me a FW 190 D any day

  • The sound of Victory!

  • The Griffen, although the upgraded engine just doesn't sound as sweet as a Merlin!

  • Whoever's flying that Spitfire is flying it hard, just like it was designed to do.

    Utter brilliance.

  • this engine sounds different, it's also got that whistle that sounds like a German supercharged engine??

  • Stuka sound much more powerful!

  • @emperor270885 sonny - your shittin me ...right?

  • @emperor270885 Ha Ha The Stuka Was A carthorse In comparrison to the Spit which was A raceHorse.

  • This Spitfire of course ahd no armament, purely for photographic roles, the MkXIV was the sam with cannons and somewhat slower wih all the extra weight, This was in my opinion the most attractive warplane ever built. I sold my MKXIV quarter scale and was hoping to see it flying up here in the NE uk.

  • thought for a second he was gonna strafe the spectaters.

  • @ebutuoymp3 oyu know what he was saying don't you..

    dadadadadadadadadadadadada

    AWESOME sond though.

  • Bomb the bastards.

  • that sound is orgasmic.

  • Oh god it sounds sooooo gooood!.

  • RR Merlin then Griffon - same masters same sound. Performance and reliability that few other engines ever attained. The Merlin gave the Lancaster its amazing bombload capacity and the Mosquito's performance even at altitudes beyond the reach of other aircraft. The Mustang only came good after they threw away the Allison engines and used RR. The Spit had various navy 'Seafire' versions and went on being developed until the Mk XXIV. Some pedigree, some record.

  • @GSSkipper Beg to differ! Griffon never sounds as good as Merlin. Tends to sound like it's firing on 11. Not sure why.

  • @GSSkipper even the american planes like the p51 used the rolls royce merlin, well you cant expect the yanks to make an engine that powerful lol

  • @rs200000000000 funny because only AFTER the Americans heavily modified the Merlin did the Legacy of the P51 which out classed the Spitfire in every did come about. Packard V-1650 is the engine used in the Mustang look it up

  • @fistacuff56 phhh what the fuck ever man who won air superiority in europe the fucking RAF, hurricanes lancaster bombers and spitfires, if you wonna get all look this up why dont you look up Harrier jump jet a british plane introduced in 1969 and still in service toady, an aircraft that conspiricy theorists have said uses alien tech and the usa mod called the pride of the american airforce, obviously it doesnt use alien tech just british design genious.

  • @fistacuff56 the V-1650 Merlin was produced UNDER LICENCE FROM ROLLS ROYCE by packard (after the us mod had begged rolls royce to let them have the egine, and itproduced 1500hp and LATER IN THE WAR THE SPITFIRES WERE MAKING 2035 HP,

  • @fistacuff56 The Spitfire XIV was faster than the Mustang, more maneuverable, had a higher service ceiling, could climb better, and even had a better rate of roll, which was formerly the Mustang's only performance advantage over the Spitfire. It was superior to the P-51D in EVERY combat category except initial dive speed and range, and the only way range came into play in a dogfight is if the P-51 could fly around long enough for the Spit to run out of fuel! not my words facts lol

  • @fistacuff56 William Dunn (US fighter ace who flew Spitfires, P-51s, Hurricanes, and P-47s): "Now, if I had to make the choice of one fighter aircraft above all the others - one that I'd rather have tied to the seat of my pants in any tactical situation - it would be, without any doubt, the world's greatest propeller driven flying machine - the magnificent and immortal Spitfire."

  • @fistacuff56 Eric Brown (RN test pilot and holder of the world record for number of types of aircraft flown): "I have flown both for many hours, and would choose the Spitfire [over the Mustang] if given a choice in a fight to the death."

  • @fistacuff56 Gordon Levitt, Israeli fighter pilot, comparing the Spitfire, Mustang, and Avia S-199 (Jumo-engined Bf 109), all of which the Israelis flew: "Despite the pros and cons, the Spitfire was everyone's first choice."

  • @fistacuff56 Karl Stein, Luftwaffe Fw 190 pilot (who served mainly on the Eastern front): "English and American aircraft appeared on the scene in those closing days of the European war. Spitfires were the most feared, then Mustangs..."

  • @fistacuff56 USAAF 31st FG War Diary (when transferring from Spitfires to P-51s): "Although pilots think that the P-51 is the best American fighter, they think the Spitfire VIII is the best fighter in the air."

  • @fistacuff56 USAAF pilot Charles McCorkle (who flew both in combat), reporting on a mock combat between a Spitfire and Mustang in 1944: "Now we could see which was the better aircraft...a Mustang and a Spit took off for a scheduled 'combat', flown by two top young flight commanders. When the fighters returned, the pilots had to agree that the Spitfire had won the joust. The Spit could easily outclimb, outaccelerate, and outmaneuver its opponent..."

  • @rs200000000000 The spitfire was much better at dogfighting that the mustang, however the Mustand had a far greater range, so where the Spitfire couldn't protect deeper bombing raids into Germany the Mustang could.

In some respects this was a great advantage, although it had the downside of higher pilot loss.

  • @fistacuff56 ow my mistake the later p51's also used the later griffin rollsroyce engines as well , under licence of course, i will give you this the p51 played its tank busting roll very well

  • @rs200000000000 "When I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the war was over." Reichmarshal Hermann Göring, commander of the German Luftwaffe.

  • @fistacuff56 yea because its so shit that to have gottern through the luffwaffa had to be finished :)

  • @rs200000000000 whatever you say man lol

  • @fistacuff56 rofl

  • @fistacuff56 Is that cos they turned up late? :)

  • @Bazajt but the world thanked god that they did though.....just sayin

  • @rs200000000000

No it did not the Mustang NEVER used Griffin engines. It started with Allisons and then went to Merlins. NO Mustang was fitted with Griffins other than post war Reno Racers.

  • There is no greater sound on this earth than the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 Long live the Spitfire which i think is the best aircraft ever built.

  • @TheLatch44 Accept this aircraft does not have a Merlin engine. It has a Griffon engine :)

  • Isn't this a Spit14? 5 bladed prop -long wing.

  • Germans love this plane! :P hahah. course they dont

  • Those American planes can go home! The Germans and the British made the best planes of the era!

  • many people know about the spitfire, but people dont know abut the start of the spitfire:the supermarine baby

  • @Orx1 The Spitfires blood lines lie in racing seaplanes for the Schneider trophy in the 1920s. It was redesigned into a gun platform with its 8 browning machine guns and merkin engine.

  • that slow thumping undertone brings a tear to my eye. God save the Queen!

  • Mach Schnell! lol sweet 4-pointer over the crowd!

  • ...starting around 02:55

  • and on your right is the plane that kicked our asses in ww2

  • @RonanJ1 What a typicial prat comment from a prat who's probebly never done anything useful for his country!!! you waist of time!

  • The Germans may have nicer cars, but we have nicer planes :-))

  • 3:02 . Victory roll !! lol. In front of a German crowd !

  • @crazyfox564

The pilot was german, so it was a four-side-roll (the anouncer said: `eine wunderschöne Vierseitenrolle´)...

  • TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA! I'm a yank and I absolutely love the spits. Best looking and best sounding. Yes I know the Mustangs had a Merlin in them, but its just not the same. I don't care if the carb floats made it stall in negative G, spits look so cool when they roll out. My fav is the Mk. XIVc razorback with eliptical wings and 36.75L supercharged RR Girffon.

  • just don't mention the war...

  • "If he tries one of those agains he will be splattered over the field like strawberry jam."

  • Beautiful !!. Second or two about 1.30 when you get a glimpse of another plane and the Spit looks like its going after him !!....

  • I watched this just to remind myself of the great guys who gave everything for our country.. Its a pity we don't have leaders that are good enough to lick their boots.

  • The Mk19 Spitfire was a Photo Reconnaissance version - the fastest of all Spits with a top level speed of 460 mph.

She has a streamlined windscreen and the same 2,050 hp Griffon 65 engine of the Spitfire MkXIV (the ultimate combat interceptor fighter of WWII in my opinion).

Where the 27 litre RR Merlin rings out a pleasant melody unequalled by anything on earth, the raw power and torque of the 37 litre Griffon blasts out the sound of a buzz-saw, inferred as "I'm going to EAT you!".

  • Great video... awesome sound of the wonderful

Merlin Engine... the whistle and the purr of pure horse power... stunning.

  • thanks

  • We did see a Victory Roll very nice eh

  • real men fly old planes ;)

  • PURE BEAUTY

  • Awsome video, Ausgezeichnet!

  • YES THE SOUND IS AWSOME THE BATTLE OF BRITAN DVD IS GREAT WITH THE BACK STORIES OF FILMING, THE SOUND IS CREATED BUY THE TWO STAGE SUPERCHARGER GIVING A POISITIVE ENGINE SOUND ! ONLY RECONISEABLE TO THE ENGINEER ALSO THE V12 ENGINE DOUBLE OBER HEAD CAM ? OR SINGLW WITH ROLLER CAMFOLLOWERS ! FARR AHEAD OF ITS TIME !

  • Great video and great sound, but the Griffon just doesn't raise the 'hairs on your back' like the Merlin. The Battle of Britain was the high point of the Merlin powered Spitfire and Hurricane - hearing them on a British summers day can bring tears to the eyes.

  • @llynmarinecharters I agree, the Griffon is a Heavy metal rock band, but the Merlin is a philharmonic orchestra

  • And this is in Germany. Though I do have a soft spot for the Spitfire and the ME109

  • the only 70 year old bird that gets me going lmao

  • thats a older version of the Spitfire, it has the Griffon engine not the iconic Merlin engine

  • @TheXxVIP3RxX the newer versions had the uprated griffon.....

  • @TheXxVIP3RxX wrong, thats a newer version, the Merlin was in the first batch of Spits, the Griffon was in the later models :)

  • Did he just do a victory roll in front of a german crowd?? lol

  • @sansbury09 kind of :) Looked like a 4 point victory roll, just to drag it out a bit haha!

  • @sansbury09 TO RIGHT HE DID

  • Sopwith FTW

  • They should have screamed in WWII ohh my god a spitfire....run for you lifes!

  • Ok. I now have a new favorite video on youtube.

  • I know, I know... Mustang Mustang Mustang!!! Air Superiority Machine. Ain't nuthin' finer with wings then or now. I was born 40 years too late!

  • Griffon - 36 Litres is not as nice sounding as the Merlin of 25 Litres.

  • If my German is correct this is a French Griffon powered Spitfire MK19?

  • what a beautiful aeroplane , with a beautiful sounding engine :-D

  • Further to my previous comment on Merlin and Griffon sounds, a very good vid of a Spitfire and Hurricane with Merlin engines [and a Griffon Spit] is : "Pure Merlin Engine Sounds "Without Music". --- [over Beachy Head at the Eastbourne Airshow]

  • Its simple -the Merlin engine sounds much better than the later and more powerful Griffon

  • @tim60s321

That's a matter of opinion. personally I have always preferred the sound of Griffons.

  • the griffon has such a different sound than the merlin, it sounds raw and less refined than the merlin but of course more powerfull.

  • Actung Spitfire!

  • The most beautiful sound in the world. Thank God for Rolls Royce. Awesome.

  • I really hope this beautiful bird isn't owned by a german

  • @Jonathanfroglegs11

    who cares yu dumbass!!

  • @TheToomack me you retard. These things are more than just aircraft, they are part of England.

  • @Jonathanfroglegs11

Right! Just like Fish and Chips. Don't buy German cars! Buy English cars like Bentley, Mini, Rolls-Royce.......

  • @TheToomack apart from the fact mini is now German because BMW own them and RUINED the car design

  • @Jonathanfroglegs11 England?? THE UK!!

  • @Jonathanfroglegs11 I think you mean part of Britain ol' boy. Flown by British pilots in the Battle Of Britain :)

  • i like them much more than the f16

  • the griffon motor was amazing but it did not have the awesome sound of the merlin, and also the typhoons and tempests were used to chase v1's especially since the tempest was the fastest allied fighter.

  • what a sound :o)

  • Google Christophe Jacquard for info about the pilot

  • Absolute beautiful aircraft!

  • Beautiful!

  • GOOSEBUMPS!!!!! Love this aircraft! :-)

  • Comment removed

  • If you will permitt me...... Achtung Spitfeuer!! and yes as everyone else has pointed out this is a Griffon Engine, look at the long nose and the distinctive power bulges at the side. Lots and lots of pwer...but a merlin has a sweeter note

  • Gänsehautfaktor 10.

  • Fat fat horsepower.

  • R,J, Mitchel and Rolls Royce, Thank you both

  • PRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETETETEEEETETETETETETETEEEEERRWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWMMMMMMMMMMMMMMÄÄÄÄÄAAAA

    AWESOME

    A TOMCAT IS SHIT

  • Why is everyone commenting about Merlin sounds when the Spitfire in this clip is powered by aq Rolls Royce Griffin?

  • I LOVE THAT SOUUUUUND !

And its nice to see the germans flying the old nemesis fighter planes :)

  • God bless everyone who gave there lives to save this country and our way of life its just a shame we have not taken care of it. RIP GREAT BRITAIN

  • Who needs 6x forward-firing .50cal machine guns when you've got that noise.

  • every captured german pilot purely for the sake of honour said they were shot down by a spitfire when the truth is they were most likely shot by a hurricane lol bloody germans

  • @FuckingMudaFucker That was known as Spitfire snobbery

  • @musicbruv huricains were no better than spitfires the former had wodden parts though :) my grandfather was a huricain pilot according to him they were more maneaverable than spitfires and were responsible for destroynig v1 misslies :)

  • @FuckingMudaFucker dyslexia lures KO

  • @FuckingMudaFucker I don't think this can be right. It was the Typhoons and Tempests (also Hawkers) that did most to counter the V1s. By that time in the War the Hurricane (note spelling) was no longer really frontline.

  • And pilots who transferred from Spitfires to Hurricanes used to talk about "Hurri-lugging" because the Hurricane was that much heavier on the controls.

  • @jonnybottle i always thought hurricains were made partially of wood. i would havd thought thet woild be more nimble than spitfires

  • @FuckingMudaFucker Nope! not quck enough! and the Spit was more manoverable than the Hurricane!

  • My granduncle was on a anti-aircraft gun on a train and a Spitfire shot him his wristwatch from the wrist!

  • Indeed awesome!!! Amagin he attacks a train. This is the real sound when he's diving and attacking. Annoying German commentator...

  • victory has a sound, and it sounds like this!!!

  • I just came ;)

  • It's funny how these days, 60 years after the war, that each country holds a great deal of respect for the other sides planes. In all honesty you couldn't really say that one was better than the other as each had it's own characteristics. But they will all live on in history for future generations to marvel at whenever they get the chance to see any of them. And lets not forget the men on both sides that flew them, hero's in their own right.

  • @ronaldrobin allthough I get what you're trying to say, as an austrian who is very ashamed of what my country did to humanity, I'd ask you not to declare nazi pilots as heroes

  • @daniko20

Hi, Not all Germans were Nazi's and not all Nazi's were German and in war things take place that should not take place. You may feel ashamed about things that took place the same as I feel ashamed about the bombing of Dresden or Frankfurt and most of all Berlin. I cant honest say I feel proud when I see the film of Berlin women and children hiding in shop doorways as Russian soldiers fire big guns just yards away.

  • @daniko20 part 2 by then you could tell that the war was over, so why destroy more buildings take more lives for no use whatsoever. We have hero pilots men who braved the skies to fight against the Luftwaffe the same as the Luftwaffe pilots braved the skies not only to fight above England but also to protect Germany. The war ended 60 odd years ago now it's time for us to make sure that Europe stays war free and that friendship builds on the strengths of the lessons of the past

  • @ronaldrobin Never mind all the rest of it, we all could spend the century debating things either way. Wasn't the sound of that Griffon sucking in air like bugger all else on the planet good as it gets? Bloody, bloody, bloody brilliant! Respect to all combatants it just sounded 'kin brilliant to me!

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttt.

  • In spite of its destructive purpose, I think the Spitfire is the single most beautiful machine ever created by Man. Thanks for a great video :)

  • @KevLaTtolya The spitfire, as with most of the planes from it's era, was not designed to kill or destroy. Reginald Mitchell designed it purely to fly. It was only after production was started that they started putting weapons on it.

  • @0r1x If you're right, perhaps you'd allow me to substitute the word 'effect' for the word 'purpose' in my previous post? I would describe the Spitfire as one of those very rare things: a beautiful killing-machine.

  • @KevLaTtolya Agreed

  • @KevLaTtolya Men like blowing shit up RAWR!

  • @SuperDrunkwalrus I'm a man, and I don't like 'blowing sh*t up', as you so eloquently put it. I'm not sure what 'RAWR' means, but I suspect that it doesn't mean very much :)

  • @KevLaTtolya Lighten up im 14 btw. But a spitfire is probally the number 1 plane ever made

  • the griffon was an excellent upgrade but the griffon does not have the spine tingling purrr of the merlin

  • Great plane. 4 .303 machine guns just way too weak and Spitfire very susceptible to destruction from ground fire. P-51 Mustang with 6 .50 caliber machine guns, tougher frame, and longer range definitely the best plane of WW2.........once it had the Rolls Royce Merlin engine of course!!! ;-)

  • But the mustang didn't win the war between us and the germans did it?? It is a nice plane but the spit still did a lot od damage with it's firepower
