There is rarely any beauty in war. But the Spitfire was created to defend Britain from an enemy which seeked to destroy us, not to attack. This plane is the product of ordinary people like my grandmother, in small towns and villages all over the UK. It embodies perfectly the spirit of the British during the war. Without the Spitfire, i probably wouldn't be here today. This and the Lancaster are the two most beautiful planes ever built in my opinion.
A Long nosed RR Griffon engines Mk 19 in French markings according to the titles. Sound Ok and is fast, but the lesser powered Merlin is pure music. Achtung Spitfeuer indeed. Many thanks
@blacktiger955i Well maybe, I do like the look of the Mustang also the Corsair.that in fighter planes, the best looking plane ever was the super connie.
@blacktiger955i Im Aussie, I like to look at works of art in anything and the spitfire is one of them. I have a quite big list list of favourite man made things.
This Spitfire of course ahd no armament, purely for photographic roles, the MkXIV was the sam with cannons and somewhat slower wih all the extra weight, This was in my opinion the most attractive warplane ever built. I sold my MKXIV quarter scale and was hoping to see it flying up here in the NE uk.
RR Merlin then Griffon - same masters same sound. Performance and reliability that few other engines ever attained. The Merlin gave the Lancaster its amazing bombload capacity and the Mosquito's performance even at altitudes beyond the reach of other aircraft. The Mustang only came good after they threw away the Allison engines and used RR. The Spit had various navy 'Seafire' versions and went on being developed until the Mk XXIV. Some pedigree, some record.
@rs200000000000 funny because only AFTER the Americans heavily modified the Merlin did the Legacy of the P51 which out classed the Spitfire in every did come about. Packard V-1650 is the engine used in the Mustang look it up
@fistacuff56 phhh what the fuck ever man who won air superiority in europe the fucking RAF, hurricanes lancaster bombers and spitfires, if you wonna get all look this up why dont you look up Harrier jump jet a british plane introduced in 1969 and still in service toady, an aircraft that conspiricy theorists have said uses alien tech and the usa mod called the pride of the american airforce, obviously it doesnt use alien tech just british design genious.
@fistacuff56 the V-1650 Merlin was produced UNDER LICENCE FROM ROLLS ROYCE by packard (after the us mod had begged rolls royce to let them have the egine, and itproduced 1500hp and LATER IN THE WAR THE SPITFIRES WERE MAKING 2035 HP,
@fistacuff56 The Spitfire XIV was faster than the Mustang, more maneuverable, had a higher service ceiling, could climb better, and even had a better rate of roll, which was formerly the Mustang's only performance advantage over the Spitfire. It was superior to the P-51D in EVERY combat category except initial dive speed and range, and the only way range came into play in a dogfight is if the P-51 could fly around long enough for the Spit to run out of fuel! not my words facts lol
@fistacuff56 William Dunn (US fighter ace who flew Spitfires, P-51s, Hurricanes, and P-47s): "Now, if I had to make the choice of one fighter aircraft above all the others - one that I'd rather have tied to the seat of my pants in any tactical situation - it would be, without any doubt, the world's greatest propeller driven flying machine - the magnificent and immortal Spitfire."
@fistacuff56 Eric Brown (RN test pilot and holder of the world record for number of types of aircraft flown): "I have flown both for many hours, and would choose the Spitfire [over the Mustang] if given a choice in a fight to the death."
@fistacuff56 Gordon Levitt, Israeli fighter pilot, comparing the Spitfire, Mustang, and Avia S-199 (Jumo-engined Bf 109), all of which the Israelis flew: "Despite the pros and cons, the Spitfire was everyone's first choice."
@fistacuff56 Karl Stein, Luftwaffe Fw 190 pilot (who served mainly on the Eastern front): "English and American aircraft appeared on the scene in those closing days of the European war. Spitfires were the most feared, then Mustangs..."
@fistacuff56 USAAF 31st FG War Diary (when transferring from Spitfires to P-51s): "Although pilots think that the P-51 is the best American fighter, they think the Spitfire VIII is the best fighter in the air."
@fistacuff56 USAAF pilot Charles McCorkle (who flew both in combat), reporting on a mock combat between a Spitfire and Mustang in 1944: "Now we could see which was the better aircraft...a Mustang and a Spit took off for a scheduled 'combat', flown by two top young flight commanders. When the fighters returned, the pilots had to agree that the Spitfire had won the joust. The Spit could easily outclimb, outaccelerate, and outmaneuver its opponent..."
@rs200000000000 The spitfire was much better at dogfighting that the mustang, however the Mustand had a far greater range, so where the Spitfire couldn't protect deeper bombing raids into Germany the Mustang could.

@fistacuff56 ow my mistake the later p51's also used the later griffin rollsroyce engines as well , under licence of course, i will give you this the p51 played its tank busting roll very well
No it did not the Mustang NEVER used Griffin engines. It started with Allisons and then went to Merlins. NO Mustang was fitted with Griffins other than post war Reno Racers.
There is no greater sound on this earth than the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 Long live the Spitfire which i think is the best aircraft ever built.
@Orx1 The Spitfires blood lines lie in racing seaplanes for the Schneider trophy in the 1920s. It was redesigned into a gun platform with its 8 browning machine guns and merkin engine.
TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA! I'm a yank and I absolutely love the spits. Best looking and best sounding. Yes I know the Mustangs had a Merlin in them, but its just not the same. I don't care if the carb floats made it stall in negative G, spits look so cool when they roll out. My fav is the Mk. XIVc razorback with eliptical wings and 36.75L supercharged RR Girffon.
I watched this just to remind myself of the great guys who gave everything for our country.. Its a pity we don't have leaders that are good enough to lick their boots.
The Mk19 Spitfire was a Photo Reconnaissance version - the fastest of all Spits with a top level speed of 460 mph.
She has a streamlined windscreen and the same 2,050 hp Griffon 65 engine of the Spitfire MkXIV (the ultimate combat interceptor fighter of WWII in my opinion).
Where the 27 litre RR Merlin rings out a pleasant melody unequalled by anything on earth, the raw power and torque of the 37 litre Griffon blasts out the sound of a buzz-saw, inferred as "I'm going to EAT you!".
YES THE SOUND IS AWSOME THE BATTLE OF BRITAN DVD IS GREAT WITH THE BACK STORIES OF FILMING, THE SOUND IS CREATED BUY THE TWO STAGE SUPERCHARGER GIVING A POISITIVE ENGINE SOUND ! ONLY RECONISEABLE TO THE ENGINEER ALSO THE V12 ENGINE DOUBLE OBER HEAD CAM ? OR SINGLW WITH ROLLER CAMFOLLOWERS ! FARR AHEAD OF ITS TIME !
Great video and great sound, but the Griffon just doesn't raise the 'hairs on your back' like the Merlin. The Battle of Britain was the high point of the Merlin powered Spitfire and Hurricane - hearing them on a British summers day can bring tears to the eyes.
Further to my previous comment on Merlin and Griffon sounds, a very good vid of a Spitfire and Hurricane with Merlin engines [and a Griffon Spit] is : "Pure Merlin Engine Sounds "Without Music". --- [over Beachy Head at the Eastbourne Airshow]
the griffon motor was amazing but it did not have the awesome sound of the merlin, and also the typhoons and tempests were used to chase v1's especially since the tempest was the fastest allied fighter.
If you will permitt me...... Achtung Spitfeuer!! and yes as everyone else has pointed out this is a Griffon Engine, look at the long nose and the distinctive power bulges at the side. Lots and lots of pwer...but a merlin has a sweeter note
every captured german pilot purely for the sake of honour said they were shot down by a spitfire when the truth is they were most likely shot by a hurricane lol bloody germans
@musicbruv huricains were no better than spitfires the former had wodden parts though :) my grandfather was a huricain pilot according to him they were more maneaverable than spitfires and were responsible for destroynig v1 misslies :)
@FuckingMudaFucker I don't think this can be right. It was the Typhoons and Tempests (also Hawkers) that did most to counter the V1s. By that time in the War the Hurricane (note spelling) was no longer really frontline.
And pilots who transferred from Spitfires to Hurricanes used to talk about "Hurri-lugging" because the Hurricane was that much heavier on the controls.
It's funny how these days, 60 years after the war, that each country holds a great deal of respect for the other sides planes. In all honesty you couldn't really say that one was better than the other as each had it's own characteristics. But they will all live on in history for future generations to marvel at whenever they get the chance to see any of them. And lets not forget the men on both sides that flew them, hero's in their own right.
@ronaldrobin allthough I get what you're trying to say, as an austrian who is very ashamed of what my country did to humanity, I'd ask you not to declare nazi pilots as heroes
Hi, Not all Germans were Nazi's and not all Nazi's were German and in war things take place that should not take place. You may feel ashamed about things that took place the same as I feel ashamed about the bombing of Dresden or Frankfurt and most of all Berlin. I cant honest say I feel proud when I see the film of Berlin women and children hiding in shop doorways as Russian soldiers fire big guns just yards away.
@daniko20 part 2 by then you could tell that the war was over, so why destroy more buildings take more lives for no use whatsoever. We have hero pilots men who braved the skies to fight against the Luftwaffe the same as the Luftwaffe pilots braved the skies not only to fight above England but also to protect Germany. The war ended 60 odd years ago now it's time for us to make sure that Europe stays war free and that friendship builds on the strengths of the lessons of the past
@ronaldrobin Never mind all the rest of it, we all could spend the century debating things either way. Wasn't the sound of that Griffon sucking in air like bugger all else on the planet good as it gets? Bloody, bloody, bloody brilliant! Respect to all combatants it just sounded 'kin brilliant to me!
@KevLaTtolya The spitfire, as with most of the planes from it's era, was not designed to kill or destroy. Reginald Mitchell designed it purely to fly. It was only after production was started that they started putting weapons on it.
@0r1x If you're right, perhaps you'd allow me to substitute the word 'effect' for the word 'purpose' in my previous post? I would describe the Spitfire as one of those very rare things: a beautiful killing-machine.
@SuperDrunkwalrus I'm a man, and I don't like 'blowing sh*t up', as you so eloquently put it. I'm not sure what 'RAWR' means, but I suspect that it doesn't mean very much :)
Great plane. 4 .303 machine guns just way too weak and Spitfire very susceptible to destruction from ground fire. P-51 Mustang with 6 .50 caliber machine guns, tougher frame, and longer range definitely the best plane of WW2.........once it had the Rolls Royce Merlin engine of course!!! ;-)
See once we made things and everything......

the griffon motor was amazing but it did not have the awesome sound of the merlin, and also the typhoons and tempests were used to chase v1's especially since the tempest was the fastest allied fighter.

If you will permitt me...... Achtung Spitfeuer!! and yes as everyone else has pointed out this is a Griffon Engine, look at the long nose and the distinctive power bulges at the side. Lots and lots of pwer...but a merlin has a sweeter note

Who needs 6x forward-firing .50cal machine guns when you've got that noise.
UZC527 6 months ago
every captured german pilot purely for the sake of honour said they were shot down by a spitfire when the truth is they were most likely shot by a hurricane lol bloody germans
FuckingMudaFucker 6 months ago
@FuckingMudaFucker That was known as Spitfire snobbery
musicbruv 6 months ago
@musicbruv huricains were no better than spitfires the former had wodden parts though :) my grandfather was a huricain pilot according to him they were more maneaverable than spitfires and were responsible for destroynig v1 misslies :)

jonnybottle 5 months ago
@FuckingMudaFucker I don't think this can be right. It was the Typhoons and Tempests (also Hawkers) that did most to counter the V1s. By that time in the War the Hurricane (note spelling) was no longer really frontline.
jonnybottle 5 months ago
And pilots who transferred from Spitfires to Hurricanes used to talk about "Hurri-lugging" because the Hurricane was that much heavier on the controls.
jonnybottle 5 months ago
@jonnybottle i always thought hurricains were made partially of wood. i would havd thought thet woild be more nimble than spitfires
FuckingMudaFucker 5 months ago
@FuckingMudaFucker Nope! not quck enough! and the Spit was more manoverable than the Hurricane!

My granduncle was on a anti-aircraft gun on a train and a Spitfire shot him his wristwatch from the wrist!

Indeed awesome!!! Amagin he attacks a train. This is the real sound when he's diving and attacking. Annoying German commentator...

It's funny how these days, 60 years after the war, that each country holds a great deal of respect for the other sides planes. In all honesty you couldn't really say that one was better than the other as each had it's own characteristics. But they will all live on in history for future generations to marvel at whenever they get the chance to see any of them. And lets not forget the men on both sides that flew them, hero's in their own right.
ronaldrobin 6 months ago 23
@ronaldrobin allthough I get what you're trying to say, as an austrian who is very ashamed of what my country did to humanity, I'd ask you not to declare nazi pilots as heroes
daniko20 5 months ago
@daniko20
Hi, Not all Germans were Nazi's and not all Nazi's were German and in war things take place that should not take place. You may feel ashamed about things that took place the same as I feel ashamed about the bombing of Dresden or Frankfurt and most of all Berlin. I cant honest say I feel proud when I see the film of Berlin women and children hiding in shop doorways as Russian soldiers fire big guns just yards away.
ronaldrobin 5 months ago
@daniko20 part 2 by then you could tell that the war was over, so why destroy more buildings take more lives for no use whatsoever. We have hero pilots men who braved the skies to fight against the Luftwaffe the same as the Luftwaffe pilots braved the skies not only to fight above England but also to protect Germany. The war ended 60 odd years ago now it's time for us to make sure that Europe stays war free and that friendship builds on the strengths of the lessons of the past
ronaldrobin 5 months ago
@ronaldrobin Never mind all the rest of it, we all could spend the century debating things either way. Wasn't the sound of that Griffon sucking in air like bugger all else on the planet good as it gets? Bloody, bloody, bloody brilliant! Respect to all combatants it just sounded 'kin brilliant to me!

In spite of its destructive purpose, I think the Spitfire is the single most beautiful machine ever created by Man. Thanks for a great video :)
KevLaTtolya 7 months ago 29
@KevLaTtolya The spitfire, as with most of the planes from it's era, was not designed to kill or destroy. Reginald Mitchell designed it purely to fly. It was only after production was started that they started putting weapons on it.
0r1x 4 months ago
@0r1x If you're right, perhaps you'd allow me to substitute the word 'effect' for the word 'purpose' in my previous post? I would describe the Spitfire as one of those very rare things: a beautiful killing-machine.

SuperDrunkwalrus 3 months ago
@SuperDrunkwalrus I'm a man, and I don't like 'blowing sh*t up', as you so eloquently put it. I'm not sure what 'RAWR' means, but I suspect that it doesn't mean very much :)
KevLaTtolya 2 months ago
@KevLaTtolya Lighten up im 14 btw. But a spitfire is probally the number 1 plane ever made
SuperDrunkwalrus 2 months ago
the griffon was an excellent upgrade but the griffon does not have the spine tingling purrr of the merlin
MrPeterharold 7 months ago
Great plane. 4 .303 machine guns just way too weak and Spitfire very susceptible to destruction from ground fire. P-51 Mustang with 6 .50 caliber machine guns, tougher frame, and longer range definitely the best plane of WW2.........once it had the Rolls Royce Merlin engine of course!!! ;-)
realityright 7 months ago
But the mustang didn't win the war between us and the germans did it?? It is a nice plane but the spit still did a lot od damage with it's firepower
