@88feji Yes, I do agree with you that the model they did build (or at least used in the video) is an oversimplified one which doesn't recreate the full movements of the cat's tounge. Now to say that is the only thing of note about how cats drink is wrong, but that was not the point of the printed research (which was all about how liquids can be moved in a way people had not been aware of before). The cat part was simply what got them thinking, and gave them good press.

The withdrawing tongue ALWAYS brushes against the lower jaw's teeth if a person bothers to observe real house cats drinkig in closeup - in effect, any column of water formed by the withdrawing tongue would immediately be cut off by the closing lower jaw.

It is a means to bring the water up to the mouth so that they can catch it, and catch it before the water once more falls back down due to the effects of gravity. That is something you can in fact see in their videos, and in videos made by others (even this one).

The point is it gets the water up for the mouth to catch, not to the mouth.

The thing to note about those cats shown not to drink the same is that they are not the same cats, in fact those ones happen to be the Big cats, while this research happens to be about house cats (and those related). As a result you can't compair the two since neither is related enough to state that how one drinks is how both drink. Something that the researches note themself.
