The thing is I HAVE to download music on the internet since there's no plausible alternative where I live. They don't sell artists' CDs, here and if they do it's not the artist's album, it's just a jumble of various songs by different artists. But even if they did, the price would sky rocket and raise to $50 or in worse cases $200 and up. You think my parents are going to let me spend that much money on ONE album? Yea, as if....
@linzerdinzertv I live in St.Lucia ( West Indies). Now that I think of it, I MIGHT be able to get one or two albums if I go up north in the city and search really really hard. But....the prices would definitely be near the 100's since things in the city are more expensive. But I guess that's the beauty of the INTERNET :)
I don't mean this offensively in any way, but is it possible for you to stop moving from one side to the screen to the other all the time please? What happened to you in the middle and a close up on your face? :P
I think we're moving in the direction of artists selling their content directly, which will remove the middle man and make art more profitable for artists. I also think the internet has made it so that you can sell content to so many people that you can drastically lower the price.
In this age of piracy, the comedian Louis CK produced his own comedy special and sold it online for $5. No DRM on it; anyone who wanted to could pirate it. He's already made over a million dollars from it.
The best way to compete with piracy is to offer convenience and service that someone can't get via piracy. Steam, a video game distribution platform, is an enormous success, and I've bought many many games on it, despite knowing that I could go out and pirate any of them I want to.
Higher quality, lower prices. Seriously. I haven't seen a good movie in ages. I haven't even downloaded a movie in ages because nothing good is coming out! Movie tickets in my hometown were approaching $20 last time I was there. Not cool. That's not even getting into how high actors are paid and how low other people working on films are paid.
I only bought one American album, which was by evanescence. I love them, but I was kinda dissapointed bc all I got was a cd and lyrics. I would buy a cd from them again but not anyone else.
But I love Korean albums. Their packaged in an interesting way, and its so creative. Their more expensive, but its worth it bc you dont just get a cd, you get a piece of artwork.
Maybe the companies should work on better encryption, rather than attacking free speech. They should also make movies available online. Not everyone wants to pay $14 to see it in theatres...or $5-$7 just to rent, because that's what it costs in my town. Hell, even renting a game is $10.
I like what you said about physical packaging. When I buy an album it's usually because it comes with something unique like a photo-book or a gigantic poster, something you can't download online.

Yeah, that is it baby, ouch for the dinosaurs of Hollywood and music labels. The way of doing business today is different, deal with it.

Forget SOPA, ACTA is even more scary because a lot of other countries are involved, including South Korea and Japan.
