People need to realize that many Asian parents push their kids because it's likely they didn't get to go to college themselves and so they want their kids to be everything they couldn't be. Just shedding some light for the people commenting whose parents don't push them because they probably got the chance to go to school.

Even though it sounds extreme, i would give props to her parents. The reason why American kids get outperformed by foreign kids is the determination of the kids which most of the times they get it from their parents. I don't think her parents are strict but are demanding high results from their child. Bottom line is, as O'Reilly said, it is not the system but the kids who are fucking lazy and spoiled and whine about anything. But also the parents who are fucking lazy.

Plus I would add as a person who has seen both educational system(european and american), I don't see any problems in the American system, the difference though between USA and other countries is: in non American high schools, kids are taught to study in inductive way. @silentdaffodils I respectfully disagree. Ivy Leagues aren't looking for perfect-scoring machines, they're looking for academically strong people who'll change the world. They're getting even better at spotting those kinds of people now with interviews and long supplementaries; the girl is right that the SATs (or any standardized tests for that matter) aren't that critical in the applications process. To a certain degree, achieving a threshold mark is just as good as having a perfect score.
SAT scores aren't going to pay the fucking bills, this economy has gone to shit, even those of us that did well in college will end up on the streets :(

@jjjjorman Incorrect. The SAT score alone does not get you into any school. The SAT score is only one part of the application. People often mistake the SAT for an entrance test - it isn't. By itself, it guarantees nothing. You could get a perfect score and be rejected due to the rest of your application, which includes all your academics and all your personal elements. This happens all the time at the most competitive schools.

770 on the literature test, which is one of the most difficult SAT 2 tests, is in fact quite good.
770 on the MATH could be considered "not so bad, not so good," but obviously this Asian mom only knows to robotically look for the score "800" without doing any research on her part.

White families just don't put as much emphasis on school because, quite frankly, White people have the creativity and entrepreneurial drive to succeed without school. School can help, but it isn't everything. That is why you see most of the innovation created in the world coming from the West and not Asia.

@return135 No, study after study show that Asian youth have lowest self-esteem, thus highest suicide rates. Asian self-esteem increases after age 25, at which point suicides drop off, while White suicide rates increases because their inflated self-esteem meets reality. As for innovation, notice that a disproportionate number of Silicon Valley execs are Asian? Yeah, West innovates but look carefully at who innovates. West provides the legal framework and $, but not the creativity.

@aah3504 Your theory of why White self-esteem goes down is just conjecture. It may actually be because Whites are the most discriminated against group in America. Affirmative action, diversity, and denial of ethnic pride are all bad for mental health- and Whites bare the brunt of that.
From 800BC to 1950 European Whites were responsible for nearly ALL of the ground breaking discoveries, inventions and advancements. Read "Human Accomplishment" by Charles Murray.

@jjjjorman Incorrect. The SAT score alone does not get you into any school. The SAT score is only one part of the application. People often mistake the SAT for an entrance test - it isn't. By itself, it guarantees nothing. You could get a perfect score and be rejected due to the rest of your application, which includes all your academics and all your personal elements. This happens all the time at the most competitive schools.

A 770 in the practically hardest SAT Subject ever (not counting math II).
Ugh, wow, and I'm afraid, screw that... I know I'm going to do well on U.S. history though, but Lit and Math II, ugh, hate literary analysis.
I'm lucky my parents don't treat me like that. They actually want me to try my hardest. Even if I'm a little bit less than perfect, as long as I get where I want to be with my post-grad studies, I'm all good.
