To make the batteries to power these EVs has a huge environmental impact. The EV will have to travel many miles to balance the impact before it begins to pay off, but sadly the distance is so huge, most EVs will never cover the distance in its life time. There is also the electricity needed from the NG to charge the batteries and if the EV needs a new battery at some point, then you can see how much of a waste of time the concept is. Hopefully the piston engine will be around for many years yet.

my friends dad has one of these and he fitted a towbar and a trailer and he drove it 402 miles up and down the m6 because he had a diesel generator in the trailer and and it running the whole time

@sockosockosocko electric vehicles are NOT the future. gas engines are far from done developing and in the long run could be made less environmentally damaging then an electric vehicle. for instance take a look at the VW polo bluemotion and imagine how much more we can do to reduce emissions in the future.

@superavrillavignefan i'm not against diesel and bio-diesel. they'll be a necessary part of the solution for longer distance travel and heavy duty vehicles. you don't need to be pro this and anti that. my all-electric conversion gets about 100 mpg equivalent according to penn state scholars who did the calculations for me. EVs are more efficient - this is not arguable. your 70 mpg polo is great, yoo! but i'd rather power my car off solar panels on my garage - that's MY preference.

@sockosockosocko ah yes, i see your point and electric vehicles with more research could become a good alternative. i however think that since the batteries aren't exactly eco friendly to produce and in a lot of cases the energy used to charge the EV isn't produced in a renewable way so that could pretty much make it all useless. but in most cases for short distance travel and if the energy is produced in a renewable way it's def the solution for some people... cheers
