It looks like HZ will finally get the update we all been waiting for w/ AirMech. Am having a hard time staying calm since I got very exited w/ what I saw. People are already calling it Herzog Drei. I see it as the spiritual sucessor, but after witnessing all the similarities, I was really taken back 20 years. It been that long since my last HZ victory! I play Total Annihilation, Starcraft & M.A.X. now still. My PC can't handle newer games, but I have seen Supreme Commander.
The creators of AirMech may as well have called it Herzog Drei. Since Herzog Zwei's original developer TechnoSoft went bankrupt over a decade ago, wouldn't that make the Herzog license public domain?
This was also my favorite game as little guy. Always wanted to play some really good two player games but always trashed everyone I could get to play with me. :(
Most entertaining tactic was to crank out some motorcycle units on the map with the huge mud pit. They'd cross it in a few minutes, so while the enemy is off doing something, suddenly his main base is under attack, which distracts him. This was such a great game. This and Streets of Rage 2 were big time killers for my brother and myself.
Heya! Gotta have to correct Shodan404. Herzog Zwei does not mean 2 Dukes. Your initial idea was correct. Its simply the sequel to Herzog. Dune II ain't "Two Dunes" neither. ;)
@CoIdHeat I seem to recall in the backstory of the instruction booklet (or maybe in the intro on the cartridge) it said something like, "you must become the new leader...the Herzog Zwei". Herzog literally translates to Duke (as in Duke and Duchess, not a personal called Duke like John Wayne). And Zwei means #2 in this context. Thus: "Leader #2" or "New Leader". Fuhrer is a more functional translation of the word "leader" but a game called "Fuhrer 2" would probably not have gotten great reception
@alexrivera03 Thx buddy but i'm german, so no need to translating it to me. ^^
Anyway thats an interesting new explanation about the meaning of the title even though it still would be a really odd translation. Its like calling Barack Obama "President 44". In the end i'll guess we never know but this little mystery makes it even more interesting.
I tried playing this game and I have no idea how to, I spent 30 minutes trying to figure this out and got nowhere. All I knew is I didn't want the little bars to turn red.
Dune II's lead designer Brett Sperry acknowledged that he had played Herzog Zwei before he worked on Dune II. Therefore, I think it's safe to say that Herzog Zwei did inspire Dune II.
I'm not too sure about that, but here's another interesting fact: "Herzog Zwei" in German means "Duke II"... which sounds very similar to "Dune II", doesn't it?
@Jagged85 I never thought about that, however, that's actually more of a coincidence. You see, there was a big confusion regarding Dune 1's rights, cryo kept made the game despite not having the right for the game, Virgin (the publisher), instead of suing them decided to publish their game and delay dune 2 for a few more months
@Jagged85 I never thought about that, however, that's actually more of a coincidence. @Jagged85 google virgin interactive herzog zwei and you can read about how one guy had a part in bringing RTS to the PC. Basically Stephen Clarke-Willson was the impetus for having westwood studio look into hergoz zwei. But I still consider Dune 2 to be the first true modern RTS.
I looked it up and it was an interesting article. Thanks for the info. In case anyone else can't find it, the article is called "The Rise and Fall of Virgin Interactive" and it describes the role of "Duke 2" in the "genesis" of "Dune II" (pun intended).
lol I still have my cartridge somewhere, no this isnt the first RTS, there were ones on dos before genesis even existed. In fact, Dune 2 came out a year before the orriginal Herzog and is the predecessor to C&C series. But this one will always be one of my favs.
They should remake the game in 3d but at the same time 2d so its just the same, only for PC with up to 8 players.
@AnsatsuRaKarth Of course thi is nto the first RTS, becaus this is a sequel to Herzog, the original MSX outing of the game that had lots of similar features. It was just from this one that Westwood took inspiration to make Dune, giving birth the the current conception of what the RTS genre is.
@ShiryuGL Actually the first RTS game was Utopia made by Intellivision in 1982, it predates herzog (on msx) by 6 years. Herzog had many different features though which also helped set the way for modern RTS games.
Utopia was not a RTS, but rather it was a turn-based strategy with some real-time elements. Herzog Zwei was the first true RTS because it was the first strategy game to run entirely in real-time and without any turn-based mechanics.
@AnsatsuRaKarth You really have no idea what you are talking about. Utopia wasn't an RTS at all, and it shares nothing in common with the RTSs of today. Dune 2 came out in 1992 on dos, herzog and herzog zwei came out in 1989, and 1990 respectively.
Herzog Zwei is the precursor to Dune 2, which lead to command and conquer which really kick started the RTS genre. People like you drive me insane, you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about, but you post on every video like you do.
Dune 2 came out a few years after Herzog Zwei. The developers of Dune II in the past have cited Herzog Zwei as a direct influence (I remember reading this in a PC gaming magazine in the 90s). Herzog Zwei might not have technically been the first RTS, but it was definitely the first game that put together all the mechanics that form RTS games as we still know them today. It's a real gem.
My best friend and I spent so many hours beating the crap out of each other on this game. Wasted a couple of summers on it, and got to where neither of us could defeat the other. Good God those where great times.
Damn i remember going at it in this game for hours. I'm only 27 but damn i feel old. These kids are spoiled with all their graphics and things lol. Who remembers football when it was one on one lmao!
As you can read on the right side: "Herzog Zwei" are two German words and mean: "Duke two" and not: "Two Dukes" (this would bei "Zwei Herzöge" in German).
But I guess that this is an translation error by Techno Soft. I guess they wanted to call it "Two Dukes" in another language und thought it would be "Herzog Zwei". Well, this is not the most important thing in video game history, but I have too much free time...
Yeah man! Here's another one I tried. As defense, plant like 25 soldiers with the circular command right in front of your main base. Any enemy vehicle approaching will get confused because of too many moving targets, and in the same time your soldiers will shower the enemy with shots galore!!! Good times!
I mastered this one. Loved every second. The best is setting up a huge battle clash with infantry with a friend on 2-player mode. 1st plant your soldiers with the stationary command. And once they're all laid out, give each one in attack mode from both sides, particularly during an attempt take over of a sub-base. Good times! (Especially when the soldiers blow up like bloody jello).=D
yes yes yes yessssss hahahahah I used to leave the game on two player mode and let the money max out and we would put 50 tank to go against 50 tanks. only problem was the error. the tanks error was that they die in one shot because the the coding and graphix card wasnt able then to handle detail info on 50 individuals. I wanna play some one else besides my family in this game I have two of the herzog's.
I frickin' loved this game! My friend and I used to have a TON of fun with this game. Setting up all our troops and then sending them on an all out blitz for the enemy base. Epic battles. :D
This game was REVOLUTIONARY- I think if it had a more accessible title, more people would have played it. Most people I knew thought it was an import. What a great game.
It was revolutionary. its was the first RTSA game. the best. I agree with what you said. I only rented the game because it ha robots on it and not alot of shooting games were out. then i bought it.
Agreed. They're two of my top favorite Genesis games, and the ones I discuss the most. I constantly host games of both on Kaillera, almost exclusively in fact. :)
Toejam & Earl was my first Virtual Console download, and I hope Herzog Zwei shows up some day. <3
This game always has been, and always will be amazing. I still own it and play it from time to time, but nobody will play with me anymore because I always win :D
Of course. The Japanese are better at making games than us. And besides, I'd rather play a videogame from Technosoft instead of playing a game made by the imitators at Blizzard Entertainment.
you can play it one player is as fun the only prob is that if you are as good as me its just too easy no wait 2 player is a piece of cake too man the point is that you can do everyhting kill enemy forces yourself while putting up rocket launchers with attack the enemie while your tanks attack his base thats so cool just too easy, actually the 1 player part is better because all people i played a to stupid to play it properly
well i wouldnt call them "the other version of this game" since the Thunder Force series were a seperate series of Shmups, and one of the best ever made. they were a separate game altogether.
still Herzog Zwei is good too, i loved the old technosoft games, shame they got taken over.
I tought this was somekind of shooter, so taht's the reason why i got dissapointed of this gmae, maybe now that I know it was en RTS i'll give it another try
Oh, my God... I can't even tell you how many hours I've spent owning my friends at this game (and challenging the strength of our friendships in the process!)
Truly a classic. Amazingly well thought out. I'm STILL, to this day, never going to forgive EGM for dissing this stroke of brilliance like the ignorant motherfuckers they were (and are). Obviously a work of Japanese genius... this is right up there with chess in my opinion (and, truth be told, I'll always like this better...)
Wow , I just randomly typed this and found this. This puts a tear to my eye. My stepdad and I use to play this all the time really loud in our living room. My mother would get livid over the shooting sound from the main bots. Memories.
I have the game with box and on the back says made in japan 1990. one of my favorite strategy games. This one had a steep learning curve but once you learned it absorbed you. My other favorite is master of monsters. Both great games.
I played it so much. Here's a challenge for you folks out there, try to do EISFREI (on Level D) in under 5 mins. It IS possible.
I remember, in very early 1990, my mate had this game (in Jap on his Jap Megadrive) and we tried for hours to figure how to play it. Eventually we did, he liked it and I LOVED it. Still do.
We need an HD remake for network play - then I beat you ALL. Muwuhahahaha, ahem, sorry.
In my Xbox magazine it says this game was made in 1983. Is this a mis-print? It looks far more likely to have been made in 1993 for the sega megadrive.
The title screem says Techno Soft 1989. I would assume that was the year it was released. If that is so then this game is almost 20 years old. This game is beyond it's time.
I love this game so much... I remember playing it as a kid. The only game my uncle would never let me borrow. XD But omg, I'm so happy... just bought a like new copy off amazon, box in good condition, game like new, mint manual for 20 bucks with shipping. *Glazes over with excitement*
I got in the business of selling sega genesis games about two years ago, and i've learned ALOT! this game is especially rare among sega games. people are wiling to pay about $50 for a complete copy. i have three complete copies but i've never taken the time to learn how to play this, but it looks fun.

My friends and I could never say the name of this game when we were kids. So we just called it "Herds of Dogs go Pee" instead

herzogs zwei and toejam n earl weas the best !!
RPGnutcase 3 years ago 2

Look, I'm a geek with over 1000 (original) games. If anyone asks me what the best (or my favourite) game is, I reply "Herzog Zwei".
UNBEATEN AND UNBEATABLE.

I played this game to death! You can still see its influence today in the Battlefield series. Thanks for posting this.

Why did you have to go, Technosoft?
MysticArksRevenge 3 years ago
Of course. The Japanese are better at making games than us. And besides, I'd rather play a videogame from Technosoft instead of playing a game made by the imitators at Blizzard Entertainment.
MysticArksRevenge 3 years ago
i think i still have this somewhere lol
Blazenem 3 years ago
It's a crime that this masterpiece of a game doesn't get respect... none of the imitators made since even come close to touching it's greatness.

i play this game before... its so fun..!

I bought this game recently for £1 - I love my retro but just couldn't see the appeal.. I guess its in the two player then! Will try it out!
andy7666 3 years ago
you can play it one player is as fun the only prob is that if you are as good as me its just too easy no wait 2 player is a piece of cake too man the point is that you can do everyhting kill enemy forces yourself while putting up rocket launchers with attack the enemie while your tanks attack his base thats so cool just too easy, actually the 1 player part is better because all people i played a to stupid to play it properly

The other version of this game. Is the Thunder Force series on Genesis. They are pure shooters and good too.
spellbinderart 3 years ago
well i wouldnt call them "the other version of this game" since the Thunder Force series were a seperate series of Shmups, and one of the best ever made. they were a separate game altogether.
still Herzog Zwei is good too, i loved the old technosoft games, shame they got taken over.

does anyone know of a remake for this game?
raveneyes86 3 years ago
I tought this was somekind of shooter, so taht's the reason why i got dissapointed of this gmae, maybe now that I know it was en RTS i'll give it another try

Oh, my God... I can't even tell you how many hours I've spent owning my friends at this game (and challenging the strength of our friendships in the process!)
Truly a classic. Amazingly well thought out. I'm STILL, to this day, never going to forgive EGM for dissing this stroke of brilliance like the ignorant motherfuckers they were (and are). Obviously a work of Japanese genius... this is right up there with chess in my opinion (and, truth be told, I'll always like this better...)
pleothid 3 years ago
Just how good could a remake on the DS be?
** wireless/online VS games
** map etc on lower always (better than flicking)
COME ON.

I miss this game too.
If it wasn't for this game I couldn't say I at least like 1 RTS game.

Wow , I just randomly typed this and found this. This puts a tear to my eye. My stepdad and I use to play this all the time really loud in our living room. My mother would get livid over the shooting sound from the main bots. Memories.

冷静に考えたら、結局、このゲームってサンダーフォース2の使い回しゲームなんだよねー。そこそこ面白いけど、、、。

japanese or chinese?

I know it says 1989 on the actual game was just saying on the outside of the box it says 1990.
singdarra 4 years ago
The back of the Japanese box says (c) 1989. As I said, USA version (c) 1990.
tepid8 4 years ago
I have the game with box and on the back says made in japan 1990. one of my favorite strategy games. This one had a steep learning curve but once you learned it absorbed you. My other favorite is master of monsters. Both great games.
singdarra 4 years ago
Blimey - is everyone blind?!?!
TLook at the start of this vid!
(c) 1989 is there for all to see.
In case anyone missed it... JAPANESE VERSION (c) 1989
American Version (c) 1990.
Hope that helps!
tepid8 4 years ago
Awesome game. "Herzog zwei" would be translated to "Duke II" (the second version).

This is still my fave game of all time, ever.
Muwuhahahaha, ahem, sorry.
tepid8 4 years ago
In my Xbox magazine it says this game was made in 1983. Is this a mis-print? It looks far more likely to have been made in 1993 for the sega megadrive.
oliverscott2007 4 years ago

Genius created this!
I never saw a game like this before I bought it and haven't seen anything similar since!
