@webguy943 There's your problem. The older IBM ones were much more sturdy, some even containing rollcages. The newer Lenovo ones are made differently, and sadly, not as amazing. Many of the designs have been overhauled.
The IBM thinkpad is one of the best machines I used. I still miss my old IBM thinkpad A20m. The newer lenevo ones are still great machines but no where near the remarkable quality of the IBM
@Charbok001 you do realize lenovo acquired all the tooling for the laptops from IBM, they use the same methods in construction of the thinkpad line as IBM did.
My X30 should die a bunch of times. Despite I dropped it in the snow, in mud (to clean it up waas a pain in the ass), on a concrete from 1st floor. I can't count how many times it was sat on, dropped on the floor, etc. Eventually my hdd died (it's still running but I can't install OS on it). That's why my next notebook (arriving in a couple of days) is a T61. Thinkpad FTW.
However I bought one because my dad used his all day everyday for 5 years, and the think still looks new, and works like a champ. I've had mine for over 2 years now and even under heavy use there are no signs of wear. It's amazing.
Here is all you need to say for the slogan for thinkpads... "Its a thinkpad".. the name speaks for itself as a piece of technology that will work for you when u need it. think like a thinkpad
@ildottormale I'm talking about the House he said took the thing inside the house... tere was a fire in the house and he fixed it in a couple of weeks... fake... and I saw a gu test the thinkpad with a late... busted the laptop it's not waterproof the thing you see on the comersial is distiled water that is non conductive it's used in PC water cooling so that if it leeks it wouldn't damae the machine
7-8 years ago i brought my IBM Thinkpad for £75 and all but the disk drive works perfectly now. alto old using Google chrome it matches my current netbooks (Compaq mini 700) internet speeds.
i am now planning to buy a new high spec laptop to do my CAD modeling and IBM seems a good choise.
What I find most incredible about this is not that the laptop survived the fire/water damage, but that the hard drive miraculously survived the landing after the two-storey drop. I guess it would've been off at the time, but it's still a rather incredible tale.
@Sarnuial Even when the laptop is on, the ThinkPads have the active protection system which parks the hard drive arm during situations of lots of motion, preventing it from crashing into the platters, which is what causes most hard drive deaths.
@Sarnuial Hard drives are pretty sturdy when turned off, the problem is when the hard drive is turned on and reading/writing head is on top of the discs. The hard drives in Thinkpads does also have a rubber protection around the edges, which protects it. But still an amazing story, I love my R500.
im not to sure about that, a lot of other notebooks are mostly made of plastic, of which would melt the outside of it to the point it cant be used. thinkpads are built though
The Dell C600-640s and others are the most successful series of laptops, but they are flimsy plastic, basically, however, VERY easy to deal with for repairs. I got the EVO N180 and it trumps the Dells with options, having two drive bays one can use (floppy/CD/battery) and DV port on a P3 machine, as well as 15 inch display
My last laptop to own is the 560x IBM Thinkpad, one of the first was the PS Note with color 8 inch and 486 processor. CRAP that one, the 560? Not so much but it broke taking it apart!
i own a IBM Ps/2 Model P70 386 with Windows 3.11! so your laptop is newer then my old one. but lock with get windows ME i had it for years ago it looked cool but it worked bad
Ok the design is not that pretty, but that totally doesn't bother me. That's not why you buy a laptop for, right?
I much rather have a very good and reliable laptop that looks simple than a shiny Acer or whatever that looks fantastic but is actually a piece of sh*t.
IBM owns all other brands. Apple may be quicker, but that's just because of the Mac OS. IBM can't help Microsoft building lame software.
Not me, the C series Latitude Dells are the most ergo friendly, I am on a D800 at present, and I own a Toshiba A25 and Compaq EVo x3 (N180 and N600C and 610C as well as Dell LS, and Toshiba Sat Pro with 90Mhz processors
Not true, Dell is my favorite because I can really type without looking for the keys...and believe me, they move them around on laptops!! They also support modular upgrades, as does Compaq EVO
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah right, its IBM what have no soul, and dell & Microsoft. Apple's customers satisfaction is number one out of all other computer companies. If you think that laptop in this video is a nice one, well you've never seen a macintosh
Because clearly the only visually appealing style is shined white plastic and frosted aluminum. I think I'll take my metal re-enforced LCD bezel. so no thanks; you can keep your brittle plastic.
Let's see who comes out of this alive. There's a reason why Thinkpad designs have remained unchanged since 1992. They're so "ugly" that they've collected numerous awards on both looks and performance.
i spilled soda on my thinkpad and then i washed it in the kitchen sink with soap. left it dry out in on the roof for 3 days while i went on vacation. when i came back i turned it on and it seemed to work fine. only the keyboard was busted because of the intense scrubbing. new keyboard cost me $20.
don't know about price, but I've used r40s and r52s, and both are built like rocks. hardware might be a bit outdated by today's standards, but should be good enough for office purposes.
OK So I will say this in advanced I have done the impossible also I have set it on fire (Put paper around it rather than the desk on fire, wet it with a hose (fireman's hose), and threw it out from say 4 ft (rather than 2nd story)..Now the thing is I right after dropped it I booted it(it was an ok) lolz But this was all done in 20 minutes and is going to be left out for 2 days (minus the fact that the battery may have died)
looks like just an Advert, im using a T42 here and the DVD is broken and a few keys missing but seems to work quite well, but i wonder just what happens if you leave one on a Scottish mountain for a few days in winter or Sahara on a hot day, any idea anyone, might be a real test.
You're right about the R series--terrible. The T and X series are the best ThinkPads, even after Lenovo has "improved" such things as the new T series keyboard and "next generation" rollcage. Yeah, right Lenovo. Don't screw with the best keyboard in the world, and don't skimp on the rollcage to save money. Nonsense. Nonetheless, they make the best notebooks in the world.
Mam dokładnie ten sam model,i jeśli wymienić,to tylko na innego IBM-a lub Lenovo:-)I have old T-23 after tuning(512ram,80hdd)win xp-professional Start26s:-)FujitsuSiemens:-(CompaqPresario:-( IBM:-)
The T20-s were built like tanks, but that's history now. The newer series ain't as tough.
Still, I used to own a T40 and it withstood months of mistreatment before it died - or rather its hdd did, I bet if I replaced it the laptop would kinda work to this day.
It looks like a t23. lolz a true thinkpad owner can tell how it looks like since we have one lolz. BUt still I have no courage to do a crash test of my own.
i received an old thinkpad t42 from uncle. anyway i accidentally dropped it down a flight of stairs. to my complete surprise it still works flawlessly. I want to buy a lenovo in the future. is there something special about the t42 or is it same for all thinkpads?
ThinkPads are great! I own two of them, a T21 and a T22, they're almost identical, but I prefer using the T21 because the screen has a super resolution; 1400x1050, great!!!
I haven't really owned a ThinkPad, but I have worked on ThinkPad's, many IBM, and some Lenovo. The ones I received were absolutely damaged out of their shell, but what is great to know is ThinkPads keep your data safe, almost regardless!
you can hate lenovo who turn the thinkpad to garbage ,but please don't hate that worker guys,i think it can be better if we give lenovo some time. I still think thinkpad is better than most other notebooks.
True store just happened to me is that my T43 is basicly dead as of yesterday(August 2nd 2008), just one day after the warranty expired. Now the machine can turn on and works but as soon as I move the machine a bit(move, lift...) it freezes.
Where did this video come from? So true true that they should write it on the screen. It seems that his thinkpad starts like 1000% faster after being melted. Mine was never in fire and it takes it at least a minute to start (even with most of preinstalled crap removed)
Why wouldent you invite your neighbour to ur wedding?

Yeah, right Lenovo. Don't screw with the best keyboard in the world, and don't skimp on the rollcage to save money. Nonsense. Nonetheless, they make the best notebooks in the world.

R series is just like T serise, but R series is mainstream and T series is performance.

The T20-s were built like tanks, but that's history now. The newer series ain't as tough.
Still, I used to own a T40 and it withstood months of mistreatment before it died - or rather its hdd did, I bet if I replaced it the laptop would kinda work to this day.

I'm using a t20 right now; it IS a tank.

i received an old thinkpad t42 from uncle. anyway i accidentally dropped it down a flight of stairs. to my complete surprise it still works flawlessly. I want to buy a lenovo in the future. is there something special about the t42 or is it same for all thinkpads?

ya right not to sound rude but my thinkpad didn't survive the drop from a couch and 1/3 of my hard disk is dead and i lost all my files

I have an A21p since 2001 and it is still running strong as of now.
(never had an service issue)
My mom have been using a X31 since 2004 and it is still running strong.
(never had an service issue,either)
And this T43 I had since Aug 2005 died just one day after warranty expired.
I also got a T61 Aug.2007. Its screen backlight burned out within first week of purchase.
I just want to say, I hate you Lenovo.
Everything just get worse and worse since you take over.

you can hate lenovo who turn the thinkpad to garbage ,but please don't hate that worker guys,i think it can be better if we give lenovo some time.

Shit.

Where did this video come from? So true true that they should write it on the screen. It seems that his thinkpad starts like 1000% faster after being melted. Mine was never in fire and it takes it at least a minute to start (even with most of preinstalled crap removed)
