  • I like it how at 0:23 there is an iMac sitting on the desk

  • I wish they we're still making them as hard as the t40

  • I have the same computer as the one in this video, and I highly doubt it could withstand all this!

  • I have thinkpads: 600, 600E, T40, T41 :D ThinkPads FOREVER :D This is BEST laptop :D

  • Holy shit, today is September 21st o_O

Not only is it his daughter's 9th anniversary, but also the anniversary of his ThinkPad surviving all of that. Beast.

  • Fireman saw that it was a Thinkpad so he had no qualms throwing it out the window to save time.

  • Thinkpads are fugly... no matter what

  • @freakyfunk17 Fugly? The ThinkPad is a modern classic. Also, function over style.

  • I'm watching this on a ThinkPad right now xD

  • If I'm not wrong,this is real,the ThinkPad was a T20.

  • this is strange. my thinkpad didnt go thru anything yet it broke down 3 times in the last 6 months. thank U thinkpad!!!! D:

  • @webguy943 Trolololololololo

  • @webguy943 Was it a new thinkpad (made by Lenovo) or an older one (made by IBM)? The difference in build quality between the two is massive.

  • @Makoglider new, made by lenovo.

  • @webguy943 There's your problem. The older IBM ones were much more sturdy, some even containing rollcages. The newer Lenovo ones are made differently, and sadly, not as amazing. Many of the designs have been overhauled.

  • I wonder if that voided the warranty?

  • you gotat love thinkpads there fkin great latops i got one for free and i love it

  • Fireman: Let's pick up random objects that look easy to grab to throw out the window!

    (Throws ThinkPad out of window)

  • i've one with windows xp sp1 ^^

  • Let's see it survive a blend tec blender?

  • @clintyKav Will it blend? Thats the quesssstion! HAHAHAH XD

  • but can it survive a sledge hammer?

    LATER: Nope.

  • Asshole firemen

  • The IBM thinkpad is one of the best machines I used. I still miss my old IBM thinkpad A20m. The newer lenevo ones are still great machines but no where near the remarkable quality of the IBM

  • This is a true story I worked as a disassembler here in T.O a lot of different laptops come in my way and Thinkpad has the most durable body

  • The IBM ThinkPad!

    REAL LAPTOP!!

    Not that crappy Lenovo thing!

  • @Charbok001 you do realize lenovo acquired all the tooling for the laptops from IBM, they use the same methods in construction of the thinkpad line as IBM did.

  • I'm amazed at all the stories of people handling their computers badly. Are you all idiots?

  • My X30 should die a bunch of times. Despite I dropped it in the snow, in mud (to clean it up waas a pain in the ass), on a concrete from 1st floor. I can't count how many times it was sat on, dropped on the floor, etc. Eventually my hdd died (it's still running but I can't install OS on it). That's why my next notebook (arriving in a couple of days) is a T61. Thinkpad FTW.

  • ThinkPads are ugly, there is no denying it.

However I bought one because my dad used his all day everyday for 5 years, and the think still looks new, and works like a champ. I've had mine for over 2 years now and even under heavy use there are no signs of wear. It's amazing.

  • Considering the IBM ThinkPad hard drives could survive 2-storey falls, imagine how much safer they are now Lenovo has put rubber cushions on them! :D

  • and it's made of plastic?! WOW!!! imagine if it was unibody alaminium, like the macbook pro's!

  • Looks like that Thinkpad was packing Fermi.

  • Looks like the KKK's plan failed

  • Looks like the kkk's plan failed...

  • That was one of the best videos i have ever seen!!

  • I love my Thinkpad T40 running Ubuntu 10.04 :D

  • I have a pentium 2 thinkpad with win98 i just use for school and it works

ready to run XP or 2000 on it ND MY THINKPAD WAS FREE

  • legend says that he still uses that laptop to this day.....

  • im sure all of these people are payed to say "Thank you thinkpad!"

  • can I turn a ThinkPad into a gaming machine? Good for TF2 and L4D? and Crysis 2?

  • @PaulDavidT Err, no? at least, not that one in the Video, its something like T2x with Pentium III xD

  • I woulda kicked that fireman's ass.

  • This...is why IBM was epic.

  • I Remember this day because my daughter got married... not because my house was burning down

  • I wonder if he still uses that laptop today

  • i want to buy thinkpad

  • Why would they throw your shit out of a window?

  • Here is all you need to say for the slogan for thinkpads... "Its a thinkpad".. the name speaks for itself as a piece of technology that will work for you when u need it. think like a thinkpad

  • Thank you Thinkpad, you saved my porn collection from the fire. xD

  • Wow! This is why I love IBM/Lenovo Durable computers!

  • LOL @ 2:49. I was thinking about purchasing the Thinkpad X201. That thing looks sick.

  • and now a real world test that can prove it

  • you must of covered the brick for the laptop

  • thinkpad the worst looking machine ever...

my macbook has been tossed down many times by my nephew many times, its aluminum that would melt incase of fire to securely seal off the harddrive...

what stupid show off from thinkpad... apple can do it everyday!

  • @ahmedejaz Best looking laptops:

    -Sony Vaio

    -Apple MacBook

    -Lenovo Thinkpad

    They are all super sexy

  • @ahmedejaz just another fanboy...

  • what a tank

  • Esas máquinas salieron muy buenas (Experiencia propia)

  • ThinkPad rulz!

  • Mac users have souls. Their souls are just owned by Steve Jobs.

  • @kelboswell It's true. Read the iPhone two year agreement contract.

  • 1:44 "I got it inside the house" WTF wasn't it burned by the fire, or you fixed it in a couple of days???

  • @ladev1988 ...usually fire+water damages are not fixable...

  • @ildottormale I'm talking about the House he said took the thing inside the house... tere was a fire in the house and he fixed it in a couple of weeks... fake... and I saw a gu test the thinkpad with a late... busted the laptop it's not waterproof the thing you see on the comersial is distiled water that is non conductive it's used in PC water cooling so that if it leeks it wouldn't damae the machine

  • 1:44 "itook it inside the house" wasn't it burned by the fire??? or you fixed it in a couple of days???

  • I don't believe it. Besides, it's a like a ripoff of a similar marantz ad

  • well... I think the power supply caused the fire.

    xD Only a joke..

  • that looks like one of the T20 series thinkpads.

  • @linuxlove4004 wow if a t20 can survive all those things, then imagine how my thinkpad t30 would do in that situation...

  • can someone plz tell me if all the thinkpad lineup has the same protective features or some had a bit more and others a bit less

  • Y yo me lo creo.

  • 7-8 years ago i brought my IBM Thinkpad for £75 and all but the disk drive works perfectly now. alto old using Google chrome it matches my current netbooks (Compaq mini 700) internet speeds.

i am now planning to buy a new high spec laptop to do my CAD modeling and IBM seems a good choise.

  • to bad they sold the thinkpad series to lenovo

  • Lenovo is making them cheaper, with worse keyboards and plastic cases rather than magnesium alloy.

  • where do you get that? i can say that cases are from magnesium or titan alloy. so please cite the source.

  • Comment removed

  • Same assembly plant. Same engineers. Dumbass.

  • Thank you Thinkpad !

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • @masterfranco1991 true lol

  • :) Ok, man

  • What I find most incredible about this is not that the laptop survived the fire/water damage, but that the hard drive miraculously survived the landing after the two-storey drop. I guess it would've been off at the time, but it's still a rather incredible tale.

  • @Sarnuial

Thinkpads have a shock mechanism that senses when its falling and locks the drive head so it doesn't hurt the platters and preserves the drive.

  • @Sarnuial

Look up: "A LENOVO NOTEBOOK CRASH TEST BY ME" on youtube.

  • @merlynDHZ “Built IBM tough.”

  • @Sarnuial Even when the laptop is on, the ThinkPads have the active protection system which parks the hard drive arm during situations of lots of motion, preventing it from crashing into the platters, which is what causes most hard drive deaths.

  • @Sarnuial I hope he backed everything up onto a flash drive.

  • @Sarnuial Maybe you should drop off a topic at mythbusters, who knows this is a joke!

  • @Sarnuial Actually, yes, it would. When ThinkPads reach speeds that could damage a it's hard drive, the HDD shuts down to avoid data loss.

  • @Sarnuial Hard drives are pretty sturdy when turned off, the problem is when the hard drive is turned on and reading/writing head is on top of the discs. The hard drives in Thinkpads does also have a rubber protection around the edges, which protects it. But still an amazing story, I love my R500.

  • @Sarnuial Nah, I've hard hard drives survive things like that. They're also mounted in rubber in a lot of thinkpads.

  • I think most of other notebooks survives too. Thinkpad is mystified a lot.

  • im not to sure about that, a lot of other notebooks are mostly made of plastic, of which would melt the outside of it to the point it cant be used. thinkpads are built though

  • I don't think so.

  • The Dell C600-640s and others are the most successful series of laptops, but they are flimsy plastic, basically, however, VERY easy to deal with for repairs. I got the EVO N180 and it trumps the Dells with options, having two drive bays one can use (floppy/CD/battery) and DV port on a P3 machine, as well as 15 inch display

  • My last laptop to own is the 560x IBM Thinkpad, one of the first was the PS Note with color 8 inch and 486 processor. CRAP that one, the 560? Not so much but it broke taking it apart!

  • i own a IBM Ps/2 Model P70 386 with Windows 3.11! so your laptop is newer then my old one. but lock with get windows ME i had it for years ago it looked cool but it worked bad

  • Good luck? I don't need luck, my original eMachine 700 eTower desktop came pre-installed with Windows ME and it works flawlessly

  • I love IBM Thinkpads!

They are simply the best, that says it all.

Ok the design is not that pretty, but that totally doesn't bother me. That's not why you buy a laptop for, right?

I much rather have a very good and reliable laptop that looks simple than a shiny Acer or whatever that looks fantastic but is actually a piece of sh*t.

IBM owns all other brands. Apple may be quicker, but that's just because of the Mac OS. IBM can't help Microsoft building lame software.

  • I love the Thinkpad design!

  • Not me, the C series Latitude Dells are the most ergo friendly, I am on a D800 at present, and I own a Toshiba A25 and Compaq EVo x3 (N180 and N600C and 610C as well as Dell LS, and Toshiba Sat Pro with 90Mhz processors

  • you are so right, jonnysnocket.

I've got a Thinkpad x61 and it is just brilliant!

and i too agree that the microsoft software just sucks.

but switch to linux (ubuntu or something) and boy, this is one rock-solid super-reliable machine!

  • Not true, Dell is my favorite because I can really type without looking for the keys...and believe me, they move them around on laptops!! They also support modular upgrades, as does Compaq EVO

  • yeah, sounds like bullshit to me

  • Mostly luck of the draw 2

  • well, i wasn't there to see it, and i don't believe it. hahaha

  • thinkpads are the most hideous laptop ever,

  • mac users have no soul

  • Because clearly the only visually appealing style is shined white plastic and frosted aluminum. I think I'll take my metal re-enforced LCD bezel. so no thanks; you can keep your brittle plastic.

  • reply WIN

  • @xrangerx WE sold our souls for buying a mac xD

By the way, I really appreciate IBM/Lenovo's hardware robustness... Thinkpads takes care of themselves ;)

  • So true and worst designed laptop ever out of all brands

  • Right. Dump water on your PC and stomp on it.

Let's see who comes out of this alive. There's a reason why Thinkpad designs have remained unchanged since 1992. They're so "ugly" that they've collected numerous awards on both looks and performance.

  • who cares, our thinkpads don't break down opposite to the macbooks or other shiny designed computers

  • wtf windows xp GAY WALLPAPER

  • eww=( i use Lenovo think pad W500...i hope it has the same quality!

  • new thinkpads with lenovo sucks

but the old ones from the 90s rules

  • I'll be running WINDOWS ME on my 560x soon!

  • i tripped on the cord on my thinkpad r40, and it went to the floor from about 3 ft. IT SURVIVED! Thankyou ThinkPad.

  • i love MY thinkpad too...

  • yes,thank you my thinkpad sl 500

  • Thank you ThinkPad.

    I love my T61

  • Is that really really true? (while touching my X60t asking this question... Of course I wont throw it into fire XDD

  • lol.....

  • i spilled soda on my thinkpad and then i washed it in the kitchen sink with soap. left it dry out in on the roof for 3 days while i went on vacation. when i came back i turned it on and it seemed to work fine. only the keyboard was busted because of the intense scrubbing. new keyboard cost me $20.

    i love IBM <3

  • I'm probably going to get one of these in a used condition. What's the best, composite, one that I can buy for under 150 dollars?

    Any help will be appreciated.

  • don't know about price, but I've used r40s and r52s, and both are built like rocks. hardware might be a bit outdated by today's standards, but should be good enough for office purposes.

  • my toughbook is better

  • Sorta but they are hideous.

  • i wonder if my thinkpad 360CE (old 486) would survive this...

  • probably

  • wow, the laptop even stringer than your house!

  • This is how strong Think Pad Laptops are..... O_O

  • And they say don't try this at home...Now everyone wants to..well try it at home lolz

  • OK So I will say this in advanced I have done the impossible also I have set it on fire (Put paper around it rather than the desk on fire, wet it with a hose (fireman's hose), and threw it out from say 4 ft (rather than 2nd story)..Now the thing is I right after dropped it I booted it(it was an ok) lolz But this was all done in 20 minutes and is going to be left out for 2 days (minus the fact that the battery may have died)

  • I`m using a T20, but I`m gonna upgrade to an X41 (Non-Tablet)

  • Heyyyy

Why not upgrade to a X61?

  • Comment removed

  • What they don't tell you is the laptop started the fire.

  • Because the laptop didn't start the fire!

  • Dells start fires not thinkpads..

  • sorry for the typos i was laughing so hard because he takes his burned thinkpad into his burnt home lmfao ahahahaha sorry lol omg

  • so he said he whet to go retrieve it and took it in the house but hows that if the house is burned ? wtf t his is bullshit storie

  • looks like just an Advert, im using a T42 here and the DVD is broken and a few keys missing but seems to work quite well, but i wonder just what happens if you leave one on a Scottish mountain for a few days in winter or Sahara on a hot day, any idea anyone, might be a real test.

  • the T series are tougher than any other thinkpads~~~ dont buy the R series BTW~~~

  • You're right about the R series--terrible. The T and X series are the best ThinkPads, even after Lenovo has "improved" such things as the new T series keyboard and "next generation" rollcage. Yeah, right Lenovo. Don't screw with the best keyboard in the world, and don't skimp on the rollcage to save money. Nonsense. Nonetheless, they make the best notebooks in the world.

  • R series is just like T serise, but R series is mainstream and T series is performance.

  • Mam dokładnie ten sam model,i jeśli wymienić,to tylko na innego IBM-a lub Lenovo:-)I have old T-23 after tuning(512ram,80hdd)win xp-professional Start26s:-)FujitsuSiemens:-(CompaqPresario:-( IBM:-)

  • The T20-s were built like tanks, but that's history now. The newer series ain't as tough.

Still, I used to own a T40 and it withstood months of mistreatment before it died - or rather its hdd did, I bet if I replaced it the laptop would kinda work to this day.

  • I'm using a t20 right now; it IS a tank.

  • my ass my sister left her thinkpad in the back of the car from scarbrough to toronto and when we took it out it wouldnt work :@

  • It looks like a t23. lolz a true thinkpad owner can tell how it looks like since we have one lolz. BUt still I have no courage to do a crash test of my own.

  • that was awesome!

  • I Love my T23 my X600 and my 360PE

  • I love My ThinkPad 600e!!!!111

  • i have a Thinkpad 600E with windows 98!

  • OMFG!!

  • i received an old thinkpad t42 from uncle. anyway i accidentally dropped it down a flight of stairs. to my complete surprise it still works flawlessly. I want to buy a lenovo in the future. is there something special about the t42 or is it same for all thinkpads?

  • ya right not to sound rude but my thinkpad didn't survive the drop from a couch and 1/3 of my hard disk is dead and i lost all my files

  • ThinkPads are great! I own two of them, a T21 and a T22, they're almost identical, but I prefer using the T21 because the screen has a super resolution; 1400x1050, great!!!

  • I haven't really owned a ThinkPad, but I have worked on ThinkPad's, many IBM, and some Lenovo. The ones I received were absolutely damaged out of their shell, but what is great to know is ThinkPads keep your data safe, almost regardless!

  • I loooooooveee my Z61m

  • I have an A21p since 2001 and it is still running strong as of now.

    (never had an service issue)

My mom have been using a X31 since 2004 and it is still running strong.

    (never had an service issue,either)

And this T43 I had since Aug 2005 died just one day after warranty expired.

I also got a T61 Aug.2007. Its screen backlight burned out within first week of purchase.

I just want to say, I hate you Lenovo.

Everything just get worse and worse since you take over.

  • you can hate lenovo who turn the thinkpad to garbage ,but please don't hate that worker guys,i think it can be better if we give lenovo some time. I still think thinkpad is better than most other notebooks.

  • True store just happened to me is that my T43 is basicly dead as of yesterday(August 2nd 2008), just one day after the warranty expired. Now the machine can turn on and works but as soon as I move the machine a bit(move, lift...) it freezes.

    Shit.

  • dam, I am so angry I can't even spell "story"

    ...

  • sounds like a hard drive error? getting a new one may fix your problem

  • THINKPAD FTW!!!

  • T41 FOR LIFE!

  • lol what if some idiot sued the fire department for property damage lol!

  • Yep, ThinkPads are built to last.

  • wow, that's amazing!

  • Where did this video come from? So true true that they should write it on the screen. It seems that his thinkpad starts like 1000% faster after being melted. Mine was never in fire and it takes it at least a minute to start (even with most of preinstalled crap removed)

  • Compal rocks
