  • For me, this composition has always evoked half-forgotten memories of staring into the night sky, lost in the magnificence of twinking stars and faraway galaxies, of distant worlds and burning supernovae, of lights in the night and of gazing deeply into the enormous, awe-inspiring panorama of existence.I love this piece, and I sincerely hope other people find it as enlightening as I did.

  • So beautiful as I always find Adams. Those first two comments are both interesting. Thank you both.

  • what's with the cat?

  • Did they use this song in the animated classic Spirited Away?

  • wow, this sounds like a composition by Nobuo Uematsu. Sounds like ti would belong in Final Fantasy 12

  • @GirugaMarc or civilization IV 8-)

  • The composer, whose work i like often enougn, is the one who compared this to the Ives. Even I thought when I read it (liner notes) uh, Hubris? But unless you are a deity, maybe you should leave it to the deities, or take it up directly with the composer. And Apollo! Spare us all from petty academic martinets!

  • You all seem to forget that this was written for the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration. If you aren't familiar with the Alamo, I doubt you would understand.

  • this would perfectly fit to a star trek movie

  • Thank you for posting this. I don't know what it is about this piece of music but it is very intense and absolutely mesmerising. It was featured as backgound music to a BBC program called "Imagine" where the experimental photographer Eadweard Muybridge was profiled. Luckily a friend of mine knew what the piece was. So now I'm on a journey into John Adam's works. Thanks again.

  • I think your opinion is totally meaningless Nyugii. Ives and Adams comparisons are standard. Also, do you compose and produce music, or are you just a critic?

  • GOOD!

  • I am writing a fantasy about aquatic insect emergences to this fine piece.

  • I think the fact that this is supposed to be a fanfare is interesting. Usually this isn't what fanfares tend to soundlike.

  • @Ajepson2 Agreed. Check out the second movement, Short Ride in a Fast Machine!

  • I frickin LOVE this piece, gives me chills.

  • Aside from the recent technical comments posted here, this Adams piece seems to evoke a "coming into being" and very beautifully. The music leads us into a bright clearing, as if we are rising up into the clouds to see everything from a new perspective and maybe even to see the thing that we have been anticipating, the thing that renews us by its presence.

  • Got to meet this composer's music thanks to Civilization IV. Great game, and great soundtrack.

  • @volemak2 same exact reason here man... i don't know if you played Civ 5 but the idividual civilization music is really good. Japan's is mah fave.

i'm trying to find the EXACT track titles and artists/composers on the reaissance/modern eras of the game. The music played is some of THE best music i've ever heard in my life but can't find the damn track titles listed online

Do you know where I can find the exact track titles for Civ 5? Is there a Civ 4 music CD i can buy or something?

  • @SignalLost730 all the Civ4 music is in .mp3 format wherever you installed the game - but there is also a CD that you can buy apparently, although since you already have all the music...

  • Woah, John Adams is awesome. I never really heard him befre today. My favorites composers are Philip Glass and Steve Reich but it looks like this guy's right up my alley too.

  • I love this song

  • "in your opinion it's not as good" This piece has inspired me more than Ives' piece personally. When I get my new laptop I am gonna have to hook up the old MIDI Keyboard and begin a thousand variations on this piece, and other stuff from John and Steve......just love them! Hopefully Jonny Greenwood will continue to produce classical too, as I found his soundtrack for "There Will Be Blood" absolutely fantastic.

  • personally I think Cliff Martinez really destroyed the competition with the "Solaris" soundtrack.......just my opinion.

  • love that CAT! and the music of course!

  • John Adams is the master...BOO at serialism et VIVE la minimalism

  • this is a reli calming peice :D xx

  • Wow, this is a great piece! I've never heard it before now, or of John Adams before. I love the picture too. :-)

  • THX for uploading this. John Adams ist the best contemporary composer.

I love his minimalistic period he once had; but the new stuff is great too

  • How could you compare Ives and Adams?,its totally meaningless, like comparing dali to rafaello.

Adams is a minimalist or post-minimalist,Ives used really different composing techniques.Dont forget this, please!

  • Forget the labeling for a minute. Both works are very slow and quiet, both feature a trumpet against a slow and quiet strings background. I'm sure that Adams was aware of that while composing. He's a great admirer of Ives.

  • but the mood of the two pieces are quiet different, and thats the point.i didnt meant to do unnecessary labeling, but u have to feel the tension in the Tromba and the far more relaxed athmosphere in the Ives piece, besides the title shows other...but i didnt meant to offend u

  • You are very, very ignorant - Ives was a huge influence on Adams. Look up "My Father Knew Charles Ives"

  • Needed this for my music class. Thanks!

  • yes. thanks for this.

  • yeah ~ my tea nice stuff here

  • Love this music by Adams! Thanks post more! :)
