Rats aren't lactose intolerant- while it is common to believe this, it simply isn't true. ;) They do have the enzymes that are required to digest lactose. Too much, just like too many fruits and veggies and other "human foods", though, can lead to digestive issues, namely diarrhea.
I've answered your concern many other times on this particular video. Sorry that it bothers you... However, they were completely fine after. No problems at all.
@JuhMoskita For goodness sake, learn something and then report back to me please. Rats and mice ARE lactose intolerant any pet handler will tell you so - it's a myth that they can eat cheese! A myth brought on by cartoons! I care about pet rats they live very differently to wild rats who will eat anything they come across to try and survive
@MrsRhythmNation dude i know what im talikng about ive been having rats for years read that "voices*dot*yahoo*dot*com/lactose-intolerance-rats-why-pet-7987174*dot*html"

@Tiffany9988667 My 2 boys LOVE cheese! Normally if I give them a treat they gently take it from me, but with cheese they nearly eat my hand off! (They have never bitten me or my partner) but they go crazy over cheese!!! It's a special treat for them, it's so cute :D

My rat Scabbers always wants what I'm drinking, even if it's just water. He's knocked over quite a few cups. He is also a fiend for dairy. If I'm eating cheese he will be on my chest trying to steal it from me. :3
My rats would go cuckoo over M&Ms, they were a once-every-two-weeks treat, an M&M for each rat. The peanut ones were their favorites, they loved the peanuts.
My rats like rice milk because it is very sweet, they also like soy milk and hemp milk. I have given them goats milk before but it is rather expensive.

@MickeyLS they mean cow milk. or to be more precise, milk with (a high amount) of lactose. milk without lactose like cat mlilk is safe to give, but still not too much.
My babies do that to my tea after it gets cold! Once I wasn't paying attention and I realized they did it while it was hot because they were snorting and shaking their head. They haven't done it since
u are a nasty fuckin weirdo who the hell does this sick shit and u probly still use this cup u nasty little cunt u fucking outcast go get a boyfrirnd or girlfriend
not all rats are lactose intolerant, as far as I know-- some of them are, some of them aren't, but with every rat it's a varying degree, and it's up to the owner to find out what the safe amount for their baby is. C: this is so cute!
@ChibiVaati: Yeah, lets leave it to the owner to find out of the rat will get seriously ill or die from it or not. *headdesk* This is not cute, it is stupid and irresponsible!
@Trampadoo It is rather risky to be feeding a rat milk, but it doesn't mean certain illness/death, as long as it's not a great amount. Of course, it's not recommended, but it's not on the same level as feeding them poison or something of the sort. Either way, the ratties are adorable.
@Trampadoo Of course it's not okay for rats to be in any sort of pain. Look, I don't want to argue-- I agree wholeheartedly with your point of view, and it's not alright to feed an animal anything that will make them sick. I am pretty certain not all rats are lactose intolerant though, and finding out as carefully as you can is alright as long as you make sure to go about it with the utmost of caution.
@ChibiVaati: I disagree with that because you can buy special milk for lactose intolerant animals they can drink without any problem so you don't have to test if they might get sick or not. So there is really no excuse for letting a rat drink normal milk whatsoever. ;)
@Trampadoo oh, is there? That's a great idea! If this video wasn't two years old, I'd suggest letting the owner of this video know. Well, it's unfortunate that these ratties were put at risk, but nevertheless, I'm sure their owner meant no harm!
@Izzy61634 You know what does make me angry though? People recording their pet reptile killing and eating a live rodent. It's just sick and inhumane...
rats are not lactose intolerant. all that is just the result of a test where rats were fed ONLY by milk. the problems they had was the result of the nutrient-deficient because of that fact. there is NO scientific evidence that occupies that rats are lactose intolerant at all...
@knurpsie666 Well actually onions kill rats. That was a test for all the people that think they know what is good for rats. I had someone give one of my rats an onion ring and the next day it was dead. The vet said that rats can not digest onions and rats inhale what they puke so they can't get it out and it kills them.
@nightroses1 Then your vet was uninformed and not qualified for his/her job. Rats CANNOT puke. End of story. They just can't. They lack the key muscles to even gag. :\ I've never heard of onions being bad for rats, even from reputable sources like ratfanclub.
@nightroses1 Sorry, I should specify. S/he is not qualified to see rats. S/he may be a fine cat or dog doctor, but clearly has no experience with rats.
Any mammal who hasn't drank milk for a long period of time can be lactose intolerant. Since rats wean off their mother's milk and don't go on cow's milk, they become lactose intolerant. But feeding them dairy once in a while is unlikely to kill them... Unless they're ALLERGIC, which is a whole separate issue.
@Izzy61634 I was actually looking at 'ratting videos' and i clicked on this one and nearly got sick.. My jack russell terrier would have alot of fun with this vermen!
rats LOVE milk yes, but it makes them very bloated and gives them digestion problems. You shouldn't feed them any dairy product, rats are lactose intolerant
Soy milk is actually great for rats and can help prevent mammary tumors. Our ratties go crazy for that and it has an effect like cat nip (totally healthy though).
Oh no!! Rats shouldn't drink milk. They are lactose intolerant. Just like they should not eat cheese.. I am not trying to be mean, I just want rats to be happy. :)
@ashkie82767 Rats are not herbivores, they are omnivores, so they're not lactose intolerant like rabbits and guinypigs. Allot of milk might give them diarrhea, but a littlebit doesn't do anything to them. Goats milk is even good for them (less fat and cow lactose ect)
o - o Reading through the comments, I never knew rats were lactose intolerant. I read about them heavily when I was younger and never came across this. My bad, I never fed them milk or anything but they would occasionally steal my dairy foods I was eating. Ahwell, they lived a healthy 4 years. Super adorable rat btw :3
@mahalogi Rats are not herbivores, they are omnivores, so they're not lactose intolerant like rabbits and guinypigs. Allot of milk might give them diarrhea, but a littlebit doesn't do anything to them. Goats milk is even good for them (less fat and cow lactose ect)

i have a question your user name says cats and rats so i presume you have cats as well i was wondering if you keep the rats in another room and take them out when the cats not around do you? if not then what do you do?
im gona foster a couple of rats then probably adopt some and we have three cats at my house and i wondering abought any other precautions i need to take besides keeping thedoor shut and stuff like that
if rats were so lactose intolerant then why would they make yogurt drops for rats and why would experts suggest regular yogurts as treats and as a fat supplement for sickly rats, i'm sure in large amount it is dangerous but clearly in certain situations and in certain amounts it is fine, i am lactose intolerant and i can handle it, you can become better with small amounts more often. there is a difference between intolerant and allergic it's real hard to die from intolerant unlike allergic
@MrsRhythmNation

Super adorable rat btw :3

i have a question your user name says cats and rats so i presume you have cats as well i was wondering if you keep the rats in another room and take them out when the cats not around do you? if not then what do you do?
im gona foster a couple of rats then probably adopt some and we have three cats at my house and i wondering abought any other precautions i need to take besides keeping thedoor shut and stuff like that

if rats were so lactose intolerant then why would they make yogurt drops for rats and why would experts suggest regular yogurts as treats and as a fat supplement for sickly rats, i'm sure in large amount it is dangerous but clearly in certain situations and in certain amounts it is fine, i am lactose intolerant and i can handle it, you can become better with small amounts more often. there is a difference between intolerant and allergic it's real hard to die from intolerant unlike allergic
