  • Hi there, Mike! It's always great to sit back and enjoy your voice and marvelous picking! Together with some friends I flew over to Dublin for the Paxton concert on Sept. 28. A nostalgia trip of course, and the concert hall was filled with old turds like me, all hoping for a short flash back to the sixties with the great songwriter and troubadour live on the stage, but alas. Just some mediocre new stuff and some children's songs. Great to hear you sing'em then! :-) And, darn good as well.!

  • hi brandulph .. good to hear from you again.. the positives are that he still wrote some great songs although i found other singer/songwriters more inspirational in those more youthfull days.. i think its great that you made the pilgramage.. thanks for your kind words as always.. regards mike

  • It's that time of year again...back for a listen to a favorite version of this beautiful song.

  • i haven't played this song for a long time.. i'll have to did it out an freshen it up..

  • so good to know you've been around...

  • around but not about.. hibernating from folk..

  • wow...excellent...love this...excellent picking

  • thanks for dropping in.. M:)

  • This is a brilliant rendition! Your picking and embellishments are beautiful...where can I learn to pick like you??

  • Thank you, that’s very kind.. these is no 'quick' answer.. mainly listening, perseverance and enjoying practice and playing.. regards M:)

  • Great man... just great! Great voice! Great guitar picking!... and indeed one of the best ones written by TP. His music has been with me ever since I heard him live in Glasgow back in the mid sixties... and you "play him" darn well! Thanks a lot!

  • thanks brandulph .. this is an all time classic and iconic song.. regarsd Mike

  • what a great rendition it puts my pathetic attempt to shame

  • that’s not the way i would look at it.. we are all on a learning curve.. where you are is exactly where you need to be at this time.. aspiration is about moving forward, enjoy the journey, play, practice, learn and have fun .. regards .. mike

  • Loved your version Great job!

  • Hi Debbie, thanks for listening and dropping me a note.. hold to joy and happiness..Mike

  • So very beautiful Mike. Such a perfect song, for the beginning of fall.

Well, not quite fall, but you know what I mean.

    Thank-you for this.

    John

  • Hi John .. don't know about your part of the world but it seemed like autumn began in July in West Yorkshire.. regards Mike

  • I came here looking for this song today...I knew I'd find it here with you. It always comes to me in the fall, when the leaves begin to turn, and the geese are filling the skies with practice runs before their long journey south. So nice to hear you sing it...I'll be back again.

  • this is a really timeless song.. that’s a lovely observation.. the life force is preparing for autumn here too.. colder winds, subtle shades of orange and less than kind skies.. all things change..

  • Great turn on this classic, Mike. Is there a chance you could message the chords?

I love the song, and your version is very special.

  • not too difficult.. .. capo second fret..

G chords.. start with G and to Am7.. the only other chord is D..

the chorus has a little run down on a C.. words of fair well .. .. And will there be not a etc concluding in D..

Best to listen and play along.. You should be able to follow.. Have fun.. M:)

  • Great rendition - great voice - You play with great ease

  • thanks for listening darrelicable.. cheers M:)

  • This song is a cryin'. Song too fast takes its feelin' away.

  • thanks Pianos85.. they are really kind words.. it helps when it is a perfect song and a classic of its time. Its a relevant now as when TP wrote it.. the sign of timeless quality.. thanks for dropping me a note .. cheers Mike

  • I enjoyed your cover of this Tom Paxton song so thoroughly. Has the composer himself heard your take on it? And such guitar work supporting your confident and warm robust voice. Nothing maudlin or over-cooked in the rendering; instead, straight-forward, beautiful balance and so full of heart. What a joy to come across this. Thanks for sharing it with everyone.

  • I thought this was a great version of the song and I love your guitar playing.

  • another sweet version of this Paxton tune, Thanks!

  • excellent playing! where did that 2nd verse come from? It wasnt present in Toms original version??

  • I was only familiar with this song from an old Neil Diamond album (either Moods or Stones). You do a great job with it, and I love the playing.

  • yes its a classic song.. thanks.. m

  • I like your interpretation of this Paxton classic. Your licks are perhaps better even than Tom's original. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks for dropping in Tony .. glas you liked the song.. cheers

  • Thanks for a great song. I have loved this song since I first heard PP&M do it a long time ago.

  • Thank you so much for this its a beautifully sad song and you do it so well.

    It really touches me.

    Do you have others ?

  • Hi, I'm picking my mail up in NZ. Thanks for the comments, you made my day. Others? as in TP's or other songs. Happy to learn others of TP M

  • Thanks Mike, I have since find your other postings, you are so easy to listen to and seem like such a really nice person. Glad to have found you on U-Tube - keep giving us all your lovely music. - Liz

  • Many thanks for those very kind words..

  • Hello again Mike, Just thought of something, listening to you - could you do Elvis Presley's "you were always on my mind" - hope you dont mind me asking, but you have such a depth of feeling in your voice that I would really like to hear you do this. Liz

  • Hi Liz, I'm happy to have a go at any song. It's sometimes takes a while to really get into a song and sometimes if the words are not right (for me) I can't get them out. I'll give it an outing..

  • Thanks Mike, this song means something to me, but I do understand, you have to be comfortable with a song to sing it well, Liz

I really must get off here now, see you another time.

  • Hi, meant to say, both songs hold sad memories for me, but they are both beautiful and never fail to reach me - Liz

  • songs do that.. now time to dream!

  • I'll see what I can do with it Liz. M

  • GOOD JOB MIKE, BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF SEEING TOM PAXTON UP IN ABERDEEN IN THE 60s,CHEERS GEORGE.

  • Hi George. Glad it did that for you. TP is one of the greatist song writers of our time.

  • coolness!

  • Very nicely done!

  • Thanks. M

  • That was beautiful .. thanks for posting

  • Your rendition of this song takes me back to a spring day 40 years ago on a hill outside Boulder Colorado with friends, family, blankets on the ground, an autoharp, watermelon chilled in a brook and flowers bobbing in the breeze...really nice, thanks much much much

  • Fantastic . It's a classic song and your gentle picking style style does it full justice . Keep it up friend . The world needs real music that moves the heart , and you did just that to me today . Brilliant .

  • Much cover and never bettered-until now

  • Very well done indeed. Only José Feliciano does it better.

  • ...enjoyed it all the way around...good luck...

  • really enjoyed, good voice and great style, thanks
