AFA, ROTC, and OTS graduates can all go to flight training. the second part, the part about how only academy grads get the "good planes" is also untrue. however, i can see why people would say that. academy admission is highly selective, so their average cadet is of higher caliber than the average rotc cadet. so when they go to pilot training, it may seem as though academy grads do better. if you take the same person and put them through either program, they would

@MrRvotri It's not a matter of mechanics, but physics. The F-35 and AV-8B are both lightweight, single-engine, air superiority fighters. The thrust-to-weight ratio allows them to get airborne without the aerodynamics of lift. Cargo planes are much heavier and that much weight and surface area requires massive lift and wingspan to get airborne. The thrust and power needed for vertical takeoff on a cargo plane would need to be so massive that the engines would be too heavy for it to even liftoff.
