I'm a big Hunter S. Thompson fan, but I think if he was alive today he'd side with Charlie. Anyway, the truth is that he was a great writer, but he exchanged his writing to play a role, like a performance, and that took over him. He couldn't write too many good stories after -72 or so. At least not as good as he used to be. If it was really his own choice or not, that we will maybe never know.
