  • This is the anthem for all the surplus people, all those junkies alkies and people hiding from the harshness of our world. Bless them all and bless the Waits too.

  • wich album is this from.

  • @MrCrazyproduction heartattack and vine

  • Great song. Most people will never understand it.

  • @SparePartsII

    and you do?

  • Lived on the Nickle---Spring&Fifth---Frontier Hotel$Million Dollar Hotel---before Eye stopped drinking, where you can still hear the click-clicking of Tom's Stacey Adams echoing out of the alleyways, off the Grand Central fruit stalls, and rattling off the rafters in my mind--no matter where you are Tom--NYC, NorCal, or Whirled-wide, you are always an Angeleno.

  • I liked that song when I was young and I love it still. Have to say "Thank you Tom" too.

  • Can't get this song out of my head.

  • Its pretty sweet actually to be a complete loser.. Just as long as one can lissen to Tom waits, anything goes down into the hole man..

  • I had never listened to this song until this past Thursday, at my son's funeral. He was just 27. His girlfriend knew about his passion for Tom Waits and this was his pavorirte song, so we chose it for his funeral. There was not a dry eye as it played. I will always love this song. I feel close to my son as I hear Tom Wait's gravely, yet peaceful voice. Gotta be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thank you Tom .

  • @mothergone my deepest sympathy goes out to you. You just brought tears to my eyes. I shall pray for you and your son.

  • @mothergone I cannot "like" your comment - but I want to express my commiseration, for what it's worth.

  • @mothergone Bless you and your son and his girl and all your loved ones.

  • @mothergone In all absolute seriousness, I've never known of any artist who I've seen so many people choosing as a "funeral" choice -- "Come On Up to the House", "On the Nickel", "Cold, Cold, Ground", "Anywhere I Lay My Head". I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I'm glad to know there is still a songwriter today who can draw more emotion than dollars. Thank you, Tom.

  • @jsnwhite619 draw more emotion than dollars

  • Love his voice is awesome and this song... best combo i ever seen.

  • Just Tom Waits... love me some Tom Waits.

  • @UnDeadGamers to drive you crazy.

  • Why is this in autos and vehicles?

  • and raider2661 I feel SORRY for you. You do not realize how close you could be to being on the Nickel. Be thankful for what you have, or you will lose it. ask a viet nam vet about humanity and humility some time. I think you would be sorry.

  • This is so beautiful I cry every time I hear it. For the unversal unblessed people all around the world, this song touches all those found covered in snow barely alive or dead. That are sent to the ground without so much as a mourner to lay a rose on thier head, nothing in the paper, nothing but a memory of seeing their face in a soup kitchen once. God bless all his children who fall asleep and wake up in his arms.

  • Amazing

  • raider2661, I feel sorry for you

  • Sorry, but I think his voice kind of sucks

  • This song was written as a poem by Ralph Waite and Tom could have never expressed it more beautiful in music than anyone else in the world. I think of my brother who was murdered in Jax, FL every time I hear it. GOD let you RIP my little brother. I miss you and tell Dad how much I miss him too.I miss you both so much. Take good care of them in death God, they worked hard, played hard and died hard. Amen.

  • This is probably the only song that Thomas Jefferson appears in! It's from Heart Attack and Vine, by the way.

  • What album is this from? Beautifull!

  • This is quite simply one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Dedicated to winos and alkies everywhere. I'm delighted to find a studio version without a slideshow or video. You need to conjure up your own pictures for this one.

  • i have never felt so much pain through a song. simple beautiful

  • Love you Trish!

  • @bensdadfrank Right back at you! :) x :)

    24 May fast approaching.....

  • @trisha2711 I'm am going to ask our priest (if you have no objection) to offer a Mass on the 24th, for Matthew ,and you, and your family. I belong to a Roman Catholic parish, where we still have Franciscan friars who run around in brown robes, sandals, (weather permitting) and still believe in God! I will do my best to attend that Mass also. That's got to be a rough aniversary for you, however you are not alone in it's memory.

  • @bensdadfrank

Oh my goodness - what a beautiful and thoughtful gesture...I would be honoured if your priest would offer Mass on 24th...I am a lapsed catholic, but I still had Matt's funeral service in a beautiful Catholic Church, with a brilliant priest, who has since had to leave that parish because of his dedication to Social Justice and the 'authorities' being unhappy that he was(still is) somewhat alternative - for example his masses are always 'in the round'-and they're ALWAYS relevant!!

  • @bensdadfrank please go to your page . there's much to be said about all of this

  • this is timeless so true it hurts badly.

  • This song was always my son's song! Had no idea what it was really about until the last few years. First heard it in Sydney, Australia when my son (little boy) wasn't quite two years old. I was with friends and my then husband - and we ALL said - that's Matthew!!

Matt died at the age of 20.

This song was played at his funeral.

  • @trisha2711 Hey Trish xxxPZ

  • @trisha2711 Wow. Must've been an agonizing yet beautiful moment when they played it.

  • @glynchandeliers Thank you for your comment. You are exactly correct - it was agonizing yet beuatiful at the same time - and even now, 11 years and four months following his death - it has the same impact. Thanks again. Take care. Trisha :)

  • @trisha2711 Feelin' ya

  • @trisha2711 I'm truley sorry for your loss. How wonderful it is that someone in Sydney Australia, and someone in Green Bay Wis. USA, can connect over a shared love of a song. Best wishes, and you will be mentioned in my prayers tonight.

  • @bensdadfrank

Absolutely! MANY thanks for your message and your prayers...It's fast approaching my boy's 32nd birthday - had he had lived. A very sad time.

Thanks once again - I'd love to connect... take care. xx

  • @trisha2711 Thank You so much for your response. Left you a message on your page. Gotta listen to this once a week. I have a little boy with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. My day may come , when i go through what you've gone through, hopefully not, but it's good to have friends who understand, even halfway around the world.

  • I first heard this song on television in 1979. It was on the Don Lane Show in Sydney Australia. I was mesmerized by the melody and the lyrics and the persona. I bought the album when I graduated from med school. I don't know what happened to the album but listening to the song 30 years later here in Hong Kong still moves me like that day in Australia. Thanks.

  • @4Cousin - I get that same feeling listening to this song, it hits me way deep. Isn't the power of music amazing, I'm always astounded by the emotional chords music can strike in all of us when its done right.
