What I have never seen or heard is how these small homes are actually less efficient on a per square foot compared to something slightly larger. The ratio of interior volume to outside envelope is not as efficient as a larger space. This unit has a volume of approximately 1000 cubic feet to an outer envelope area of 500 square feet(floor was not counted as it is presumably sitting on a foundation or slab) that's a 2 to 1 ratio making it more susceptible to heat loss than a unit with dimensions
Looks like another idealistic architect's pet project in search for "sustainable living". The only problem is projects like this only get us half way there. They get the sustainability part without much effort, but completely forget about the fact that is has to be livable. This is not a reasonable solution to sustainable living now, nor will it ever be. For a truly sustainable future, we need to develop projects that make sense from a planning perspective for the masses in varying densities.
@opivs The reason for the measurement are the building regulations. Any building under 10m2 does not need a building permit... 3x3 is 9m2 + insulation gives you 10m2...
Im sorry but it looks like crap. Im all about small living but the thing is so boring looking and the walls look cardboard. I build cabins and the prices of these thing are hallarious. Someone could build a small livable thing like this or the houses on wheels for 12,000 easily. People like this and the cabins on wheels (which I think look A LOT better) sell for around 40 to 50 thousand. Why not build a house if your going to pay that much.
VERY Unique, well thought out - definitely a home of the future - shame that hindsight is not gifted to all - with the economic crunch combined with our changing planet, having a roof over your head is better than nothing... love it~
1) Would the design differ by location? I mean, would anything be different for windy, snowy, desert or flood-plain areas?
2) Why separate shower and toilet? On an overnight train I rode two years ago the two were in one (albeit cramped) space.
3) Wouldn't hammocks work better than fixed beds? You could suspend them over the floor or each other and then fold them into a bag, as the Apollo astronauts did on the Lunar Module.
If they had another "seat" on the two seater sofa (there is room under the sliding table), it could function as a second bed. Then the house would, with a little compromise and understanding, lol, function perfectly as a two person abode.
@WhiteCamry92 I doubt there will be a garage in the rose tinted world of those that designed this house we probably will all diligently get in line like cattle to ride the bus or train.
I'll buy one when Al Gore, and The Queen, and all the corporation heads, are forced to live in these boxes! my storage building is bigger than this! Carbon taxes are only another government money bomb to hit the taxpayers with! I live in the u.s. I will not live in peasants quarters, while the rich live in mansions. If you believe that us the little people are the cause of the ozones breakdown, you are mistaken,& a fool for believing it!

so would a 2 person home be 20x20x20? or what? thatd be cool to see a little bit bigger
jruch314 8 months ago
@jruch314 Actually to have twice the space you would need the dimensions of 12.6 x 12.6 x 12.6 feet.
rbcolaco 5 months ago
it sure would be a pain in the ass to try to workout in there....just saying

Houses like this would kill the economy as there is no space to store all the junk that humans collect. This would eliminate most commerce.
