Wow. When I first realized there wouldn't be an orchestra, just two pianos I steeled my self to be disappointed. What a suprisingly rich arrangement this turned out to be. Not quite my favorite version but one of the top ones. With just two pianos made my heart feel like it was a washrag someone was wringing out. Parts of that make me want to drop to my knees in ecstasy. Good thing I was sitting. My knees are to old for that sort of thing.
I don't care if Richard Addinsell was called the fake Rachmaninov. This is doubtless a masterpiece. Love this short concert since I was a piano student. Love absolutely the execution of the piece by these young and kind of shy guys. Maison de la Radio, Paris , merci beaucoup. We' ll always have Paris thanks to God.
Roger Kamien the famous professor of musicology said that familiar melodies have the power to recall past emotions and experiences. We don’t need singers or large orchestras – just few notes. This concert is beautiful because of its melody and because it moves us. The technical aspects are for the purist and those who want to find wrong where there isn’t because they are frustrated.
I don't recall whether I first heard it in the film for which Warsaw Concerto was composed, or if the pictures in my memory are reliable: of Jose Iturbi playing the concerto in some wartime MGM spectacular. Either way, it takes me back to all those rainy summertime Saturdays I spent happily watching old movies on TV, in glorious black and white.
Great video of a great performance; thanks for sharing it.
GOOOOOOORGEOUS! Thanks so much to the uploader AND to you two guys at the concert grands for your hard work. Rarely heard, (because it's so difficult to play ??).
This work has never failed to deliver me into that wildly nostalgic world. Perhaps the only film music that has ever been moved into the classical realm.
Five minutes into this piece, and it reminds me of Grainger`s `To A Nordic Princess` with that nice plonking cow-bell sound. Also, Addinsell`s `Overture To Tom Brown`s Schooldays` is a more original work than this, although I admire them both.
Wow, GraingerArranger of WarSore Concerto by RachmAdinsell! It goes really well on 2pianos; Bravo thePianists! Take the piece as it's meant to be:a hugely successful pastiche which, unexpectedly caught on for a whole generation, ideal partyPiece for those unable to get their fingers around Rach2, etc. Great post. Thanx.
Did Rachmaninoff ever comment about the work? Somehow I think he would not have minded the aping. He may have dismissed the application of his "style" for a film but without scorn for the scorer.
this was the fir st piece of music I even bought.... On vinyl, it cost me lot!

Wow, what a great sound on what has to be the most incredible written-for-the-movies piece of neo-classical music. Wonderful. Dennis
