  • For the record, mines are installed in radiology by an angiologist assisted by radiologists and I have to wear a mask and look away from the time they disinfect with the pink stuff. Then they stick a sterile field on my arm that covers my whole body and head and I still have to keep my head turned away for the whole procedure.

  • I thank you for sharing your experience with us all and I know you are not looking for negative comments, but as a nursing student I can't help but notice that this wasn't done as sterile as it was supposed to have been....She did do an amazing job though and she seemed to make you very comfortable and ease..Thanks again for sharing!! And good luck with your journey :)

  • Ops. I forgot my greetings to ThenationofTim... Ciao ciao

  • That sterile area was so little and the needle into the arm was so free to move out of the vessel during the guidewire insertion! Anyway respect to nurse Bonnie :)

A question for PICC line positioners: dont u use intracavitary ekg tecnique? I do.

    Bye from Italy

  • Horrible sterile technique! He probably got an infection about a week later from the line

  • @MrAbwise - sorry to burst your bubble....but i did not get an infection...i went on to have chemo and radiation the next day and 6 days after this picc line was put in i received my new immune system....i am now 2.5 yrs post BMT and i am in full remission....this video was not put up for educational purposes...it was put up to show and share with people in my life what exactly i was going through was receiving treatment for the Leukemia i had...there is much more life left in me. Be Well

  • PICC chick! lmao!! Bonnie seems like an awesome nurse =D

  • when I got mine I didn't watch cause I was only like 12 and they didn't want me to look at it. had it for 6 weeks cause I have Lyme disease. sucks :( still have the scar too

  • I am glad you made it through all your treatments okay. Glad to read that you're in remission! I am getting a PICC put in tomorrow because I am undergoing ECT treatments and I am difficult to get an IV in, so my doc wants me to have a more permanent line. Thanks for posting this, even if you didn't intend for it to be educational, it was definitely informative for me.

  • @imparfaite its feels a lil odd going in but in the long run it was well worth it...i have been stuck by so many needles in the last few years it was a refreshing break for the time i had it...they were able to draw blood with ease as well as give me all the good stuff my body needed to get healthy again....!! i just wanted to share with my friends and family what i was actually going through...one important thing to remember is to attack your pain with a smile.....i did my best to always smile!

  • And break sterile field at..........3:38

  • @paddle41773 - the video was not put up for educational purposes......i am the 36yr guy with Leukemia laying on the table scared out of my FN mind about having to get a PICC line in the first place and thinking about the Chemo and Radiation i am going to be put though in the next 5 days....Nurse Bonnie made me feel at ease and comfortable with what she was doing....in the event i ever have to get one of these again i can say there would be NO hesitation in returning to Bonnie for another PICC..

  • I hope you never got a catheter related blood stream infection from your PICC line! The PICC nurse Bonnie totally contaminated her sterile field predisposing you for an infection. She touched your shirt with her tape measure then put the contaminated tape measure on her sterile field....right next to if not on the PICC she was going to insert. Total contamination!!!

  • @jdolalie1 Thank you for your comment...I did not receive any neg side effects from the insertion of the 2 PICC lines she put in me....The first one was pre-transplant and the second one was a couple of months later when i re-lapsed due to complications from the chemo/radiation/drug combos....and if i was ever in need of another PICC line i would not think twice about going back to Bonnie in a hot second....i am 21 months post transplant and leukemia free... Be Well...

  • Do surgeons insert picc lines?

  • @Adhesiveputty- this was actually a PICC Nurse...she is an RN and did one hell of an amazing JOB....she actually has put 2 into me...once for my initial transplant and then a couple months later when i had to go back for further treatments...

  • @TheNationOfTim

Oh wow, I thought it would be a surgeon at first glace considering how the gloves are on and the cut she had to make. I would not think an RN could do it, but maybe she has some other specializations.

  • thanks for posting this!! I'm getting a Picc line put in later, and I was so nervous about it. Now, not as much

  • lucky him

normally i can feel it almost ALL THE WAY!! haha

    put its cool.

    better than ivs

  • he needs a mask.

  • @tranurse - is that all you have to say.....? nothing like...oh i hope this guy made it through his treatments....or what a trouper.....cause i cut this down from 27 min to 9 to get it up here....so i filmed this for my own enjoyment....not to have it picked apart by people who say they can or would have done it better....as i have said before i would go back to Bonnie again and again if i needed to have this done again...she made me feel relaxed and comfortable..is that not the main goal?

  • @SancerSancer well, i figured that you did come out ok. that is what is important. if she treated you right and you got better, great. i just noticed some breaks in sterility. sorry if you think i'm picking it apart. if you had a compromised immune system, that could potentially be a big problem. that was just something i noticed, can't help it i guess. when she touches your shirt, she did contaminate everything. i promise i'm not trying to be a pill.

  • @SancerSancer not exactly so.A nurse's primary goal is the patient's safety! You needed a mask as well. A PICC line insertion is a sterile procedure! That means everything getting into contact w/ the insertion site MUST be sterile..your cough or breath could contaminate that site! Your head as well should face the opposite side of insertion. These are all called safety guidelines and need to be performed each time this procedure is performed! What if you were a patient with AIDS or transplanted?

  • @SancerSancer Before I had my port placed, there was a really awesome nurse who would always put my PICC's in. She was extremely good at what she did, and always put me at ease. I got to the point where I would joke and talk with her during the procedure. Gotta love those awesome nurses like her and Bonnie!

  • @SancerSancer Technically, for a PICC line the pt does not need a mask. For an IJ or Port, yes.

  • @SancerSancer No, the goal is to put all the odd in your favor for you to make it alive... a.k.a. not get sicker with a blood infection.

  • *buzzer* close but so wrong. 3 doses of Lidocaine at one numbing go is not what they did to me the other day, and I'd only had mine back in for afew days. The nurse who did MINE only had to do it twice, as for the one in the video, I think I saw like 3 or 4 times. I THIRD edofhollywood and canadian nurse: So unsterilized this video needs even off the net.

  • @wheelman2003 - wow why would you suggest i take my video down....?? this was not put up for educational purposes....i put these videos up so people could see what i was happening as i was going through my bone marrow transplant......i am almost 18 months post transplant and in full remission.....so obviously they did something right for me..... : )

  • @SancerSancer I now understood that point after I goofily posted that last one. Please forgive me and disregard that last message. I apologize.

  • @wheelman2003 No sweat....i am really happy that people are taking time out of their lives to look at something that i have done and been through...this is actually a edited version cut down to size.... perhaps my editing skills need improving hahaha i just wanted to share a lil bit of my world...thank you for your comments no hard feelings on my end...... be well and be happy : )

  • @SancerSancer Right after I posted that last uncool message it occurred to me that the reason or reasons you mentioned were correct. I apologize, Sancer. Be safe. Oh SHOOT, I just saw the bone marrow part. Man forgive me. I'm sorry.

  • Excellent video. I am now reading a book called Basic Surgical Procedures which includes the most prevalent bed side surgical procedures. It includes PICC line placement. She uses excellent teaching and psychological technique to calm the patient and give him confidence in her methodology.

  • Puting ports in onco patient is a similar kind of a process i think.

  • I second canadian nurse: bad sterile technique.

  • well i am alive and had no complications to my bone marrow transplant.....i have had not one but 2 picc lines put in by Bonnie and if i ever needed another one i would go back to her in a hot second...she was awesome....

  • for all you picc nurses out there - she has no sterile technique - his hand is touching her gown, she touched his clothing with the measuring tape then put it on her sterile sheet and touched it with the picc - i can't watch anymore!

  • wow....thats kinda harsh....i love the nurse who did my picc line and would have her do it again if i ever needed it again...infact she did a second one on me when i had a relaps from my bone marrow transplant....she is a great woman and did a great job.....no need to trash her like that

  • I'm not trying to be harsh but you should be aware that blood stream infections are potentially fatal and at the very least extend the length and cost of your hospital stay. Because I care about my patients I do all that I can to protect them from harm. Perhaps she had a poor teacher, I'm sure she would not want to harm her pts but she needs further education

  • i would have Nurse Bonnie give me a 3rd picc line if i ever needed it again....she is awesome and i feel totally comfortable with her level of skill....I had leukemia and was on deaths door step and she was part of the team that saved me....i am one month shy of a year post transplant....she was kind enough to let me film this procedure....I am the person that she is working on btw

  • @canadianpiccnurse, i measure before i ever set up my sterile field. plus he doesn't have a mask on. i can't believe she didn't measure first.

  • Oops...rewatched beginning says nurse but I have difficulty believing she's not at least a Nurse Specialist of some kind.

  • @rocknloretta i put in piccs at work, i'm an rn, not a crna or a doc. i put in six this past weds, and one yesterday.

  • This was a great learning tool! Was Bonnie an RN or CRNA or MD?

  • I gonna faint. I'm scared.

  • had them numerous times. they are painless after numbing. nice because they can draw blood with it too.

  • You did Great!

  • Yeah we do this under fluoro. You are not holding the tip of the guidewire while inserting the sheath. You might kink the guide wire and give you more problems. Also, make sure you have enough wire outside. You might push all of the wire in (thus the wisdom of hanging on to the guidwire tip). Keep it sterile!!!

  • How about using fluoro with the guide wire and a picc that has cm measurements instead of guessing the length???

  • spin the introducer while pushing at the same time to get .... wow you really don't know sterile technique...

  • yeah you really need more sterile sheets and towels! mark your spot, measure, prep, and then begin sterile prcedure!

  • What happend to Max Barriers? Where is the full body drape. You really broker your field when you measured him.

  • I was thinking the same thing!

  • How are you doing?? i hope great!

  • is that a nurse or doc inserting your PICC line?
