Rette...I'm not sure what music you listen to, but I am positive that bands don't write a song twice so that they can play it completely different when live. They would never leave rehearsals if they had to learn it two completely different ways and then acoustically as well.
I'm pretty sure that's quite inaccurate. Watch a live video, Tom doesn't move his hand NEARLY as much. Most of the song is contained to a small portion of the neck.
