Consumption will never stop, until bankers/business elite and cardinal economic values are toppled from their perch tops, and the societies freed of their grip.
Until that happens, expect more marketing and ads geared to stoke your appetite to consume more things you don't need -- but gives a good return for investors.
We have the solutions, but nothing will change until you first take money out of politics and have honest representation and common sense legislation to benefit humanity as a whole. As long as there is no Campaign Finance Reform in the U.S. The whole world is screwed.
I loved this doc, I think it really laid out the heart of our problems quite clearly. I did find disagreement with how some of the speakers painted technology however. This is actually a fallacy in reasoning - (misplaced cause, if you dig that kinda stuff). Sci&Tech is just how human beings solve problems, that's all. It's when we develop a technology and use it without intelligence, large-scale awareness and compassion (ethics) that harm occurs. Bio-eng is NOT a progress trap - Monsanto *IS*!!
The problem is our social organization that is based among other things on money, hierarchy and deceit(control of information, secrecy, ownership of information). Our current system is crap but pointing to progress or technology is a red herring.
We are wasting resources, we could all life in comfort and convenience if we design society differently. The RBE/Venus Project/ZM solution isnt THE answer but it does have elements that help see alternatives
just saw this the other night and the film is incredible. the trailer can only brush the surface of all they get into in the piece. it should be recommended viewing for everyone. bravo to the filmmakers.
The way we are heading is immorally, ethically, and spiritually unstable and things have to start changing soon. The way i see things and feel about humanity is that the majority are not going to wake up fast enuf its going to take natural disasters to get people to Wake Up and change there ways.
@casinohijack i agree..natural disasters are what it's going to take..still, have you noticed how ppl just forget about last week's/ month's earthquake/ flood?..this 'progress' is sidetracking ppl..the world is so busy that pple cannot think anymore..they just react.'.progress' will be the death of us..i reckon
wow i want to see this film, to bad we have progressed our selfs to doom, its far to late for us and the fat lady has sung , its only a matter of time till the dark ages redux
The behavior of this year's Black Friday shoppers was not animalistic. On the contrary, participants were taking part in a coordinated nation-wide flash-mob, performing an homage to Stanley Kubrick, and his opening sequence for 2001: A Space Odyssey.
@open2energy My view of Fresco's flaws: 1. A well managed, decentralised technological system of resource extraction remains reliant on non-renewable resources. 2. Creating new, concentric cities in place of existing ones ain't gonna happen on the spoils of fracking or offshore crude (or for that matter, though an intermediate stage of 'renewable' powered contruction. 3. Rational, centrally planned systems are the modernist absurdities underlying current crisis.
@open2energy I wish Zeitgeist had gained a bit more acceptance in the broader community when it came out (that an successive films like addendum that featured Fresco). I recently saw this above doc - and I have to say, I think it's impact was accessible to most people (i.e. my parents "got it"). Personally I appreciate all of them - sometimes watching these sorts of films help to reassure that my thinking is generally leading me in the right direction - It's not an easy path, but I'm not alone.
The interpretation of this film should be approached with GREAT CAUTION!
The decisions on our planet are being taken by the very few and very very powerful. THEY control the direction of the geopolitical dynamics on our planet by CREATING a PROBLEM such as wasteful management of resources. Then they wait for a social REACTION, a cry for HELP... And then they offer STRONGLY the SOLUTION that empowers them. Their solutions always take our freedoms away. We need to be open minded of the solutioN
Work conditions can always be safer and healthier, we could always find more things to live with, or less things to live with. One could always find new ways of using less energy. The quality of life in general could always be higher as time progresses...so why give a self serving, circular logic, bureaucratic cancer( AKA political interests) the role of fulfilling these goals for infinity? Since that is usually the endgame for movies such as this.
@Cleopas82 Yeah, it's sad that we live on a tiny rock, marooned in an otherwise desolate solar system, and that said tiny rock has a very finite amount of material available for harvesting and use. It may not be now, but eventually (at this pace), we will reach a tipping point where this pebble in space no longer has the resources to sustain us. Without technological processes to eliminate scarcity through recycling, we'll hit this barrier.
@Cleopas82 Furthermore, if you do not understand the fundamental problem of scarcity, both in its genuine and artificially-created (read: economic) form, then don't try selling genuine and pseudo-intellectuals on the idea that this is some magically floating credit card of natural resources in space, where coal, oil, lumber, and minerals will never, ever run out in any span of time. Pushing ignorance on others is the real problem here, because nobody is willing to accept new ideas.
This movie makes me sad that it exists. It is doomsaying, just like the doomsayers said we would all be dead and depleted by now. Either understand the facts, or believe the lie.
To make the world better, we have to start by our selves. Hence every individual has the potential to make the world better. To some of those wo posted below me: don´t lose faith, believe in yourself. Every dollar you spend is a ballot paper. Stopping consumption is an ideal, yes, so we need to learn to consume differently. The solution are available, we simply need to use them. Get informed, get the facts, get your own opinion.
@progressroy You're right, they might just bitch about how the world's changing for two hours and never actually make any concrete suggestions to slow, stop, or reverse the process. If that's the case its harmless enough.

We can only begin to solve these problems once we ditch religion and stem the tide of overpopulation.

Don't expect solutions from the same people that created them.
You have been warned.
HAHAHAHA....
open2energy 3 months ago
Two words.
Jacques Fresco.
There is your answer.
If you expect answers from your leaders... You are giving them the responsibility.
If you give them the responsibility... You are giving them the power.
If you give them the power... You lose your freedoms.
Freedom and irresponsibility are simply incompatible.
You want freedom! Get responsible!
Your leaders will jump at the chance to offer their solutions. For by doing so...
Jump at the opportunity at gaining more of your power. Get it?
