@miabelara Not every member of JRG is told to cut off ties. But I do agree that this should not be the standard protocol. Jesus made it clear that we must be willing to forsake all, including family and friends. A new believer might have to have a season of separation but eventually they should be able to face whatever Satan throws at them. Usually the family and friends are the ones that forsake the Christian because they love darkness and do not want to be near light.

I was in a "cult" similar to this one for about 7 years - my phone calls with family were monitored, and contact with old friends was prohibited, I was invited to leave often in fact I had to plead and plead and plead to stay. I loved God and the group served me in that I had support to believe as I wished. I visit often with family and friends now, but I strongly disagree - THESE ARE ADULTS - essentially they are their own people - the prophet is just a concept really, just "there" to be used
I just watched this last night and was so sad. The ones who left this group that were featured on the video all turned to the world. Back to dressing worldly, make-up, tight revealing clothing, etc. Some were cussing and talking foul. Some were straight up sinning and laughing about it. Then you see the others still in the group, trying to live a holy life that is pleasing to the Lord and THEY are the ones the parents are concerned about? How backwards.

It would be 'ok' if your child was dressing like a prostitute and hanging out at the bar every weekend with a bunch of losers ... but if that same child all the sudden decided to dress modestly and live a clean life for the Lord ... for some reason that is unacceptable but dressing like a whore and hanging out at the bar is all right.

Not the same Daniel from the movie. I have not been able to see the movie, its not here in Austin, but in SA and not online. It does seem to be very biased against the brothers.
I was in the Roberts group for a little over a year... I've shared a brief testimony in a blog post titled... Garbage Eaters, Beach Boys, Hillbillies and a ponzi scheme somewhere in between.
I came across this group in the 90s in Austin. I also saw a brother last year here in Austin again. If they were leaving society to be catholic priests or nuns this would be no problem. They are doing just what Christ said that the apostles would be rewarded for in the story of the rich young ruler by forsaking all. These parents are just upset their kids WASTED their money and did not follow the paths they set out for them.
It's been 37 years, and my heart and soul still cry daily missing my precious baby sister. Thank you, Vangie, for your dedication in bringing this important message to fruition. My prayer is your documentary will save other families from this anguish.
I spent several years with them & some of this is true & some is simply misunderstood.
