With the modest knowledge I have about Irish history, I presume that this song means a lot to many Irish people who have experienced the "fights" first hand.

Without knowing, I would say that Gary himself experienced this. That just makes this song even better and Gary more of a genius.

Gary Moore was from a Scottish family that settled in Ireland when it was part of Britain. If he supported the IRA then he supported the Irish bombing his own kin in order to make a ethnically pure nation state.
