I've been playing classical for around 7 years, and until I watched your videos had no clue how to play blues. Just now getting into it all. Thanks for all the info. Cheers
I am aware I do tend to say "umm" and "urrr" a lot. However, it is difficult to talk to a camera, have no script and receive no response. That is why I pause for thought.
Sight reading could and should be easier if it's learned by shorthand methods: chord symbol/inversions, scale harmonization, circle of fourth/fifths, and simple techiques like walk-ups/downs, pentatonic scales, apreggiation. I think sight reading should almost be the last thing a piano student learns. It's akin to learning a foreign language effective: through speaking and creating stories rather practicing grammar and vocabulary drills in the language.
Just curious why you find it hard to read sheet music. I do too. I have a few ideas. The tradition note reading/classical piano method is a challenge who have a great attention span for learning leans toward more intuitive-kinetic rather deductive-abstract. Sight reading tends to delay the reward of playing until you're techically proficent to play complex pieces; whereas in blues and jazz, you create your own complexity and learn techique as you go along.
You are awesome! Really appreciate you sharing your gifts with us, not only a gift for music, but also a gift for communicating, teaching. Thanks so much for your time Ben. Play with heart!
