You have made a very bright point that the "revolutionary" examples may not be perfect to be used for today's case, but I think Mr. glongbow has already given a very good example of Taiwan. To me, all these examples are appropriate to convince me that our HK government had already taken too much time for its own revolution.
Revolution means "You are wrong!" so we have the upheaval to get rid of you.
Reform means "I am wrong!" The first step is difficult enough, and the process of getting rid of one's bad habits, one's corrupt practices, one's privileges and one's ease of the status quo indeed usually take much longer than revolution. Hence the saying goes.

二十年可以做些甚麼事?太多太多了! 但不要告訴我一定要有普選。我不反對普選，但我討厭政棍說普選可以解決所有(或大部份)問題。社會不可能有免費午餐，香港人已經十分清楚現狀不是最好，但由現在的mud民mud連mud聯的水準去推動普選，簡直一步一驚心!
