If you hit the harmonics really nicely, you can slide them, because the vibration of the string has enough energy to survive the energyloss by sliding. And as I hear he hits more than one string, so one (two?) open string keeps the harmonic, and one on which he slides changes its sound. That's why you can hear this unique sound.
Actually, these are guesses, I don't have my guitar with me to experiment.
