  • The pictures bween 0.41 -0.52 is the cover from her first album.

  • She reminds me of Amy Winehouse...scary...

  • Thank you so much!!

  • She had been playing gay clubs in New York and that's where Orson Bean saw her. Shades of Bette Midler.

  • what an old record ! it's amazing to see something so rare. Thank you for that !

  • Albert Dekker? Google that guy and you'll flip your wig reading about his bizarre "suicide" a few years after this was recorded. BTW, I think they fixed the Babs wandering eye problem, but thankfully they didn't mess with her vocal chords.

  • i'm 25 and i think barbara streisand was GORGEOUS. i would have been all over her in the 60s and early 70s.

  • BTW, Happy belated b-day, wonderful Barbra!

  • Ain't she da best?

Learned to sing along w/ 35 of her albums.

Am singing "When in Rome" @ Skippers Jazz in "my" new Newark, 5/2/11 -

    Viva, Barbra, forever.

  • her eyes look scary in the vid

  • She looks so cross-eyed!

  • What a patronising interview! Thankfully Barbra went on to outshine all of them

  • Great post. Different world back then, but Streisand is still around and singing.

  • Wow... such a natural talent!!! Just beautiful....

  • oh, I didn't realize that was PHYLLIS DILLER at first!

  • You can hear the influences of some legendary Singers here in Barbra's voice. I hear Lena Horne and Billie Holiday. I am always amazed by the great archives saved by the members of youtube. Thanks so much for sharing this

  • I've been a fan of Barbra's all my life...never saw this clip before. Thank you so much for uploading!

  • Amazing voice- so pure here. According to Wikipedia, her big break came when when she sang at the Lion Club, a gay New York Club. She changed her name to Barbra when she was performing there. This is her first TV performance- her old brother, Sheldon, paid for this kinescope and later it was digitized-and now we have it here for all. Thanks for the upload! I was 11 years old and saw Funny Girl on Broadway. Unforgettable, Show stopping, Like nothing heard before (or since really!)

  • for once, she's on the wrong side of the camera when she joins the panel of guests!

  • she has great legs too

  • That's wicked how he's just having a smoke real casually lol.

  • They lyrics don't seem to matter.

    Almost like opera.

  • crazy eyes i love her x

  • She is 19 here. She was born in 1942.

  • @wickedlizzie09 how old is she her?

  • It's nice to see her humble and star struck

  • We miss you Babs!

  • so ironic that at the end, the guy said she's a funny girl....

  • to think that she is my age in that is just crazy

  • Sweet goodness! Was she born with all this talent?

  • @CharlesALindbergh GET BENT!!!!

  • @CharlesALindbergh are you dead?

  • @RImusclebear i hope so..

  • I'm reading Barbra's biography now and just read about her first TV appearance on Jack Paar. She still struggled for a while after that show, and actually was homeless. She bought a cot and carried it around so she'd always be able to sleep in her own bed. It's incredible being able to find these clips on You Tube to go along with reading about them. Just great!

  • I prefer bab's voice when she was older.. Nonetheless still a great singer..

  • Love seeing vintage Barbra on her birthday, Happy Birthday Barbra 2010 !....fabulous post !

  • Amazing Babe! She is the best.

  • @TheRave79 Well observed! My research has led to the discovery that not only was Orson Bean indeed sitting in, but he booked Barbara himself having seen her perform. Looks like he started something...!

  • @sydrduke *Barbra, obviously.

  • @sydrduke well,,,in '61, it might have still been "Barbara" ...

  • @hotcruiser19 she never left her religion. and she wasnt really dressing that way for modesty. she had no money so she wore things she bought for cheap. her stockings had holes in them and some of the band members complained of her smell; they even asked if she showered. she would constantly show up late dressed as a slob. she probably got that dress for thirty cents.

  • I WANT TO CRY

  • @newkookoori it's so refreshing to hear this, very rarely does your response happen with regard to todays performers.

  • OMG!! I remember seeing this!! I actually remember seeing this show! It was Barbra 's first time on the Tonight Show!! My mother and I fell in love with her because we had never seen any one sing like that! I never thought I would ever relive that moment again. Thanks again for video.

  • This is wonderful, thanks for posting. Can't remember never being a fan. What an amazing talent, you sure don't see real artists like this anymore

  • Charming ! thank you

  • What a rare talent she truly is. She honestly deserves every break that ever came her way, she made it on pure, raw talent and personality ~

  • @JohnnyGNV I agree just give her a mike , no sound effects =pure talent

  • At this point she was absolutely elegant- nose and all.

  • She is perfection!

  • WOW....I LOVED THIS...NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE....THIS IS THE BARBRA I FELL IN LOVE WITH IN THE 70'S WHEN I 'DISCOVERED ' HER.....THE RAW, INSECURE BARBRA.....not the hollywood, confident legend she has become, wth concerts paying tribute to HERSELF.....

  • WOW! thanks

  • She always makes it seem effortless.

  • Awsome. In 2011, this will be 50 years ago and she's still fabulous!

  • Very early Streisand getting her breaks and a great sound.Voice is perfect.

  • How prophetic! Did you hear Orson Bean say to Diller, "She's a funny girl, say something funny." This was way before Funny Girl was started for the Broadway show in 1964.

  • Her eyes are quite something aren't they?

  • Who iz sat gurl? I tink she haz talent!

  • No, AMY bears an uncanny resemplance to BABS! Which may be part of her act, Amy's that is....at least Streidand, a star so far above Amy, never quite behaved like Ms. Winehouse.

  • duno y im watching this, but shes got a penetrating voice.

  • She has an uncanny resemblance to Amy Winehouse.

  • you mean amy winehouse has an uncanny resemblance to Barbra :P Barbra in my opinion is gorgeous compared to Amy, but I see where you can make the association.

  • same hair maybe

Streisand has had a career for 50 years

    Whinehouse managed 50 minutes

dont compare a pathetic addict with a major legend - thats just silly!

  • oh my, she's SO tiny!

  • Sounds like Orson Bean to me.

  • Is it weird that she kind of reminds me of Frank- era Amy Winhouse? she was about the same age too.

  • She did a great job with this song which, if sung by someone else, would put me to sleep...no pun intended....don't mean to sting anyone with my remarks...Ok I will bee quiet now....(she's great!)

  • LOL... nice

  • the song's words are mysterious, lyrics penned by truman capote,

  • sleepin Bee is by far one of my favorite songs she sings in all of her 50 something albums. She's ravishing.

  • She was 19 and all the raw talent was there...amazing.

  • She wasn't all there but is wasn't nearly horrible.

  • So nice to be able to see an early Barbra Streisand. What a talent! Actually not a bad song, I can almost hear Sarah Vaughn singing it, but Barbra does a nice job too. Seems like a jazzy number. She looks so cute. That face, that beautiful face!

  • she sings exquisitely no doubt about it but even that cannot make this mediocre song palatable. Not only is it not a Great song it is not even a good song.

People have the tendency to adore EVERYTHING done by a legend .

However each to his own,if you like it enjoy listening to it.

  • She's fantastic! At the end of 'when the sun comes out' she looks ecstatic!!! Thanks for posting!

  • Just magic. Thanks!

  • THIS video IS SO EXCITING! ;)

I love Barbra Streisand. And I love too the old films and shows. So I'm so happy watching it! Thank you for posting!

  • I remember when Barbra first began appearing on 60's TV shows. She hit like a comet and took no prisoners. I had never seen or heard anyone perform a song as she did. I wasn't the only one impressed. Her star rose swiftly, burning bright.

  • She was actually in a B'way show "I can get it for you Wholesale" and yes she was a comet. I lived in Manhattan and within weeks of her first album her name was everywhere.

  • Her name is BAR-BRA!!!!

  • i think that old lady was tryin' to diss barbara on the downlow..did u hear that little snit about her dress??? that's why barbara looked at her. But Jack Paar was looking at barbara like he wanted to jump into her dress!

  • the "old lady" in the clip was Phyllis Diller...so I guess she was just trying to be funny. That's Orson Bean hosting, sitting in for Jack Paar that episode. Gore Vidal (author) is to Barbra's right. Quite an eclectic guest list that night!

  • This was the Jack Paar Show but the host is a fill in....Orson Bean with Albert Dekker! Phyllis Diller has the gloves. ??? the man at her right and then Hugh Downs at end.

  • this is fabulous---to see barbra in her prime...to see her so amazed, nervous and so fresh, i can watch this video over and over again. and i really hope that someday either barbra or somebody can release all these old performances from her on these classic shows...jack paar, gary moore, ed sullivan etc.. ---cause i would love to see the whole episode with her interviews as well as singing, i think it is so fascinating!

  • I could watch this a million times and never tire of it

  • The greatest non-operatic Singer of the 20th century singing a song so incredibly innocent and immensely beautiful (sleepin bee) It is Cole Porter isnt it?

  • I think Sleepin Bee is Harold Arlen

  • She is so incredible. It is hard to believe she is only 18! Such a maturity and understanding of her voice at that age. And it only got better!

  • she hasn't changed that much through the decades her voice and star power were in place as a teen!! I Love Her!

  • 18 years old. Incredible.

  • At the very end...."She's a funny girl too."

  • Don't mind Barbra ,she has a lot of talent ,but what a terrible song ,absolutely shocking.

I noticed the host was smoking as he introduced her,my haven't times changed,it wasn't a criminal offence to smoke in those days.

  • Terrible song? Why? To each his own I guess.

  • Sometimes people just have no taste

  • yeah, it was a horrible song.

  • that song is terrific, what do you mean????

  • Perhaps not your taste?

  • no its just not the type of song Im use to hearing barbara sing. Maybe its because she was just coming out. I got into barbara streisands music when I saw Hello Dolly.

  • Your comment means nothing at all until you tell what your notion of a 'great' song is.

  • im so glad I wasn't the only one that thought that song was horrible Orky

  • Her nose!

  • I guess Babs hadn't develop her particular style at this point in her career, then again she looks like Diane Caroll and quite alot of girls back arround this time, styles were really weird. I guess they were going through a transiiton.

  • Thanks for posting this, she is freaking awesome. This is the best thing about YouTube, to be able to see these rare clips that otherwise would be kept in archives or private collections.

  • When and how did BS correct her cock-eyedness?

  • Goodness gracious, how perfect is she? That was incredible...at 3:50 or so she reminds me a lot of Audrey Hepburn with her vibrato...doesn't really sound like typical Barbra Streisand, but she sounds great nonetheless.

  • Babs looks a bit cross-eyed on this, lol. Nice job though. For lovers of this song, see Mel Torme nail it at the piano, as composer Harold Arlen overlooks in complete agreement. Dianne Carroll's original version from the Broadway score is solid as well.

  • oh my gosh, i always thought that too. especially in her 20's and in funny girl

  • gosh, Phyllis reminds me of Ellen DeGeneres.. check out her mannerisms!

  • is that phyllis diller next to her?

  • she's so YOUNG!!! look how cut she is!!!! ahhh! she's nervous!!!

  • Great clip. I see why Barbra Streisand did so well with her singing career. Just proves that the most politically conscientious advocates for civil rights and government accoutablility can also be wonderfully talented.

  • Comment removed

  • It would be a far stretch to call me a streisand fan but it would be a farther stretch to call Ferrell a SINGER...at least barbra sings the lyrics instead of that hideous grunting and squealing, with no regard for melody or structure that Ferrell tries to call singing.

  • gurpst, you're completely missing it, I'm no big Streisand fan but I'll take her subtly nuanced and personally expressive style as shown here, over the overwrought abstract emoting of Ms Ferrell any day. Each to his own I guess but making every syllable a chance to show off your chops just don't make for good singing in my book.

  • please tell me you are joking with that comment. i have seen nasty comments about barbra on here but you take the biscuit!!! no soul or emotion ay?! you must not know what any of that is. fair enough you can have your own opinion but if you think she 'sucks' then dont bloody bother commenting. by the way you are grossly outnumbered here with your thoughts on this video....

  • Your lack of flexibility in your view of the world would seem to guarantee no one will take you seriously.

  • "vocalism?" That's a big word for you, isn't it? You must write for the New York Times as a music critic.

  • The amazing thing is that after 40 years she's STILL the top female vocalist of all time and a true icon.

  • She looks cross-eyed here.

  • My God. To be eighteen and have my shit together so strong is my greatest dream.

  • Wow she was only 19 here & such confidence already!

  • Love the beehive hairdo.

  • Which was the gay club?

  • The Lion Club, one of the premier gay clubs of the time in NYC (Greenwich Village).

  • THx, now can you explain what this song means?

  • Whatever it means, it's exactly how I felt when I met my sweetie! :)

  • My God, what talent.

  • I have NEVER seen this! Amazing footage!

  • Maybe Barbara was puttin' on a little Maria Callas that night.

    Girl shakes me up.

  • she was perfect, she is perfect, and she will forever be perfect! love ya babs!

  • Orson was sitting in for Jack Paar that night. Obviously, Jack heard about or saw this peformance, and insisted Barbra return when he did....

  • I saw an interview in the 80's where Streisand saw this footage and was appalled at herself and how affected and false she was behaving andsaid she was acting piss-elegant because she was so ashamed of being a Jewish girl from Brooklyn

  • shes sooo freaking gorgeous and is the most talented singer/actress there has ever been and ever will be in the world.

  • That's Gore Vidal sitting beside her!!! Hugh Downs the co-host/second banana is on Gore's right (our left). That's the actor Albert Dekker, big in the fifties, who's smoking.

  • Is that the same Dekker who accidently asphyxiated himself in his bathroom while masturbating dressed in leather, straps and with "cocksucker" written in lipstick on his body? Fascinating!

  • Sorry, folks but that's true about Dekker. Google it!

  • Barbra was so cute here! amazing voice as ever! Thanx for sharing this vid!

  • I adored this. It is very interesting too listen too her pre-belt. I have never heard her use her head voice so much. Didn't Phylis Diller use Cry Me A River in her act at Bon Soir? Rumors have told me that Babs actually used a lot of Phylis' material and that is how she knew it so well and was so WONDERFUL at performing a lot of it... you know, other than the fact that Babs is fabulous anyway.

  • I love this! Barbra is gorgeous! I love young Babs. And older for that matter. LOL.

    thanks alot for sharing!

  • For someone who loves and idolizes Barbra, this was a real treat. Thank you!!!

  • Her first tv apperance. I love this. (: Very good. THANKS!

  • Selling Cigarettes. anyway lovely voice

  • So ORSON BEAN discovered Barbra Streisand???

  • lovely

  • Orson Bean, of "To Tell the Truth" fame, was guest-hosting for Jack Paar on this episode, and he was puffing away at a cig., which, unfortunately, was okay back then.

  • Astonishing ~ pure, brilliant talent from day one!

  • BRILLIANT!!!! The sights and sounds on Jack Paar! Now I get why people always say it was such an amazing show!

  • Talented lady

  • She is really Bob Dylan's cross-eyed sister.

  • That's why I love youtube... I thought there was only sound recording left from that. Amazing to see Babs in her first tv appearance. Did you notice that high note in when the sun comes out? That must have been higher than any of her official recordings!

  • Whos that elderly woman next to barb thats lendign her the gloves?

  • That was Phyllis (also billed as Phyliss) Diller. Barbra, who was working at the nightclub Bon Soir at the time, was her opening act from September 9 to November 20, 1960.

  • Stunning! She's only 18 here and has so much of what makes a great singer. Stunning, a sense of the character, the lyrics and the feel. Like, if this doesn't personify talent, what does?

  • Right, on every count. What a huge talent she is!
