Albert Dekker? Google that guy and you'll flip your wig reading about his bizarre "suicide" a few years after this was recorded. BTW, I think they fixed the Babs wandering eye problem, but thankfully they didn't mess with her vocal chords.
You can hear the influences of some legendary Singers here in Barbra's voice. I hear Lena Horne and Billie Holiday. I am always amazed by the great archives saved by the members of youtube. Thanks so much for sharing this
Amazing voice- so pure here. According to Wikipedia, her big break came when when she sang at the Lion Club, a gay New York Club. She changed her name to Barbra when she was performing there. This is her first TV performance- her old brother, Sheldon, paid for this kinescope and later it was digitized-and now we have it here for all. Thanks for the upload! I was 11 years old and saw Funny Girl on Broadway. Unforgettable, Show stopping, Like nothing heard before (or since really!)
I'm reading Barbra's biography now and just read about her first TV appearance on Jack Paar. She still struggled for a while after that show, and actually was homeless. She bought a cot and carried it around so she'd always be able to sleep in her own bed. It's incredible being able to find these clips on You Tube to go along with reading about them. Just great!
@TheRave79 Well observed! My research has led to the discovery that not only was Orson Bean indeed sitting in, but he booked Barbara himself having seen her perform. Looks like he started something...!
@hotcruiser19 she never left her religion. and she wasnt really dressing that way for modesty. she had no money so she wore things she bought for cheap. her stockings had holes in them and some of the band members complained of her smell; they even asked if she showered. she would constantly show up late dressed as a slob. she probably got that dress for thirty cents.
OMG!! I remember seeing this!! I actually remember seeing this show! It was Barbra 's first time on the Tonight Show!! My mother and I fell in love with her because we had never seen any one sing like that! I never thought I would ever relive that moment again. Thanks again for video.
WOW....I LOVED THIS...NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE....THIS IS THE BARBRA I FELL IN LOVE WITH IN THE 70'S WHEN I 'DISCOVERED ' HER.....THE RAW, INSECURE BARBRA.....not the hollywood, confident legend she has become, wth concerts paying tribute to HERSELF.....
How prophetic! Did you hear Orson Bean say to Diller, "She's a funny girl, say something funny." This was way before Funny Girl was started for the Broadway show in 1964.
No, AMY bears an uncanny resemplance to BABS! Which may be part of her act, Amy's that is....at least Streidand, a star so far above Amy, never quite behaved like Ms. Winehouse.
you mean amy winehouse has an uncanny resemblance to Barbra :P Barbra in my opinion is gorgeous compared to Amy, but I see where you can make the association.
She did a great job with this song which, if sung by someone else, would put me to sleep...no pun intended....don't mean to sting anyone with my remarks...Ok I will bee quiet now....(she's great!)
So nice to be able to see an early Barbra Streisand. What a talent! Actually not a bad song, I can almost hear Sarah Vaughn singing it, but Barbra does a nice job too. Seems like a jazzy number. She looks so cute. That face, that beautiful face!
she sings exquisitely no doubt about it but even that cannot make this mediocre song palatable. Not only is it not a Great song it is not even a good song.
People have the tendency to adore EVERYTHING done by a legend .
However each to his own,if you like it enjoy listening to it.

no its just not the type of song Im use to hearing barbara sing. Maybe its because she was just coming out. I got into barbara streisands music when I saw Hello Dolly.
I guess Babs hadn't develop her particular style at this point in her career, then again she looks like Diane Caroll and quite alot of girls back arround this time, styles were really weird. I guess they were going through a transiiton.
Thanks for posting this, she is freaking awesome. This is the best thing about YouTube, to be able to see these rare clips that otherwise would be kept in archives or private collections.
Goodness gracious, how perfect is she? That was incredible...at 3:50 or so she reminds me a lot of Audrey Hepburn with her vibrato...doesn't really sound like typical Barbra Streisand, but she sounds great nonetheless.
Babs looks a bit cross-eyed on this, lol. Nice job though. For lovers of this song, see Mel Torme nail it at the piano, as composer Harold Arlen overlooks in complete agreement. Dianne Carroll's original version from the Broadway score is solid as well.
Great clip. I see why Barbra Streisand did so well with her singing career. Just proves that the most politically conscientious advocates for civil rights and government accoutablility can also be wonderfully talented.

Check out "Rachelle Ferrell Autumn Leaves" on youtube if you want something with real emotion and life. That IS female vocalism, not Madison-Avenue Crap.
It would be a far stretch to call me a streisand fan but it would be a farther stretch to call Ferrell a SINGER...at least barbra sings the lyrics instead of that hideous grunting and squealing, with no regard for melody or structure that Ferrell tries to call singing.
gurpst, you're completely missing it, I'm no big Streisand fan but I'll take her subtly nuanced and personally expressive style as shown here, over the overwrought abstract emoting of Ms Ferrell any day. Each to his own I guess but making every syllable a chance to show off your chops just don't make for good singing in my book.

Is that the same Dekker who accidently asphyxiated himself in his bathroom while masturbating dressed in leather, straps and with "cocksucker" written in lipstick on his body? Fascinating!
I adored this. It is very interesting too listen too her pre-belt. I have never heard her use her head voice so much. Didn't Phylis Diller use Cry Me A River in her act at Bon Soir? Rumors have told me that Babs actually used a lot of Phylis' material and that is how she knew it so well and was so WONDERFUL at performing a lot of it... you know, other than the fact that Babs is fabulous anyway.
Orson Bean, of "To Tell the Truth" fame, was guest-hosting for Jack Paar on this episode, and he was puffing away at a cig., which, unfortunately, was okay back then.
That's why I love youtube... I thought there was only sound recording left from that. Amazing to see Babs in her first tv appearance. Did you notice that high note in when the sun comes out? That must have been higher than any of her official recordings!
That was Phyllis (also billed as Phyliss) Diller. Barbra, who was working at the nightclub Bon Soir at the time, was her opening act from September 9 to November 20, 1960.
Stunning! She's only 18 here and has so much of what makes a great singer. Stunning, a sense of the character, the lyrics and the feel. Like, if this doesn't personify talent, what does?
The pictures bween 0.41 -0.52 is the cover from her first album.
