  • He is a start for you. Begin by installing a screens on all runoffs into all major rivers and streams. If the "screens" are well thought they could be engineered to collect and store plastics and trash, then easily collected and recycled. I have ideas for the design and could make rough blueprints if needed.

  • The government need to crack down on companies producing so much plastic garbage! why do things need to have so much packaging? why use plastics that dont break down? use other corn made plastics that do break down after a much smaller time frame. All boils down to money and companies making their packaging with the cheapest expense in mind and NOT THE ENVIRONMENT!!

  • @adventurediversneil Well, since you and I comprise the "government", then I guess we should start cracking down on ourselves an start taking responsibility. You know freedom and responsibility are synonymous really.

  • HAIKU

    I hatch! Crawl! And swim!

Oh how I love my sweet life,

    Don't litter my home.

    —A Green Sea Turtle

  • this is sad :(

  • remember glass beach in fort bragg ca?they cleaned it up but theres still engine blocks and sparkplugs inside of rocks..

  • Isn't the point of this video to make us aware of what we're doing to the ocean with our NEED to use plastic for everything? Who cares if they swear or speak a different language. Do you see what the water looks like? I think we need to eliminate as much plastic use as possible. This will never go away, but we could try our best to stop adding to the disgusting mess we've created in our beautiful oceans.

  • DL the audio from this clip at tubepull doht cohm.

  • It's like a reality tv show

  • The saddest thing is that this could have been an extremely powerful, educational documentary as is if it were not for the moron who dropped "F" bombs and said "SHIT" throughout the entire thing. Lost all credibility. Oh and the onboard scientific expert spoke no english and hails from "The university of the Oceans"? Thats a new one to me. Would that be next to the Mayo Clinic or is it Frankfurt Polytechnic. I challenge u to find one other graduate w/degree in science that cannot speak english

  • @griessinthewood You DO realize you can get a degree in Science regardless of what language you speak, right? =\

  • @R3K0D4 absolutely, dah. it doesn't change my point. You r making a film documentary for a crusade to educate and gather data, everyone else is speaking english except the Mayan witch doctor from U of the Oceans whilst the deck hand uses profanity in every sentence. Its a boat full of enthusiasts at best

  • @griessinthewood Again; language is NOT a mark of intelligence in any are of study. As well, it makes me wonder - do you really think professionals don't curse either? And he clearly doesn't use it in every sentence; he doesn't actually use it too much more often than some of my professors. Profanity is only really considered profane if someone listening to it feels it is.

  • @griessinthewood Knowledge has nothing to do with intelligence therefore language is irrelevant to intelligence. OK we're clear on the language part. Where do you think all of that plastic comes from? What language is spoken in the target country that such a documentary will have the greatest impact? Where is this UofO? What is the language spoken there? My brother got his masters at the university of frieburg. You better know german to go there. You have missed my point completely

  • @griessinthewood you see so many diseases in the world. my best friend died from disease. I knew for a long time that plastic was one of the main causes. I watched this, and I realized I could have done something about it. I would say "fuck" i would curse myself. Not only that, there is no way to keep that from happening to other people. We depend on plastic so much, that there is no longer any way to fix this. so fuck. shit. whatever other word because we're so FUCKING HELPLESS.

  • @moonknight there's pigs wandering around on the street where you live? thats weird,

  • Comment removed

  • @scottie0904 "...actually understand why we, and everything else is here..." Really? Why dont u share with the rest of the entire population of the planet this knowledge u say u have? I mean R u a super genius? Even Einstein, the greatest mind ever, said "All I know is that I know nothing." Its funny how you speak like you are speaking the general consensus of the species. Just to clue you in- NOBODY KNOWS OR UNDERSTANDS WHY WE ARE HERE NOR WHY ANYTHING ELSE IS HERE NOR WHERE HERE IS ACTUALLY

  • Ocean Voyage Institute is making a HUGE effort to clean up this mess. They are currently raising funds to go the North Pacific Gyre this summer with a team of volunteers to collect the plastic and trash that has accumulated there, as well as researching environmentally friendly ways to dispose of it. Please help save our oceans and the wildlife that live there by googling “dream sail raffle” and visiting our website, as well as posting it on your pages!

  • At around 1:25, they show the plastic accumulated after an hour of trawling. there is probably a 100 grams of plastic. let's assume trawler speed = 5 knots = 8000 meters covered. assume a trawler entrance 3m x 1m. Swept volume=3m^2 x 8000m = 24,000 m^3 = 24 million liters. Seawater density= 1025 kg/ m^3: thus, plastic content, by mass = 0.1 gk /(24,000,000l *1.025) = 1 part plastic per 246,000,000 of water.

  • NICE LOOK AT MY VIDEO TOO

  • I was so disapponted when it didn't look like the mountain of garbage from futurama

  • we would need a good mass extermination...

  • This film really, really makes me sad. It is like watching Wall-E for adults.

I want to know everything about this problem, keep up the good work.

  • @Zoloft61 Wall-E was nearly the saddest film I have ever watched under the guise of a kids movie.... seriously... I cried ... and not because WALL-E was alone...because I fear that we are headed that way and fast...

  • @cagirlinportland Right now we are faced with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, I wonder: what's next? There are two solutions to this problem: maybe we should start building an ark-spaceship that contains 6 billion people or we should start building 6 billion robots that clean up the mess we have made. Either way it's a mind bogling task but worth the effort.

  • @Zoloft61 maybe this is the earth's way of finally cleansing itself... and like a dog with mud all over it's fur - shaking us off of it...

  • Well this is enough to be a life's worth of birth control for me... I couldn't have children and give them THIS world...

  • @cagirlinportland I agree completely, I'm 50 and sometimes think it would be nice to have children and then I see and think about this garbage and I feel good about my decision not to procreate (unfortunately there are billions of others willing to make up for it?!)

  • @oneirishpoet glad I am not the only one really questioning procreation. I think when I was in school the statistic was like the more education a couple had the less likely they were to procreate - like PhD's would choose not to have kids... whilst GED/diploma/no diploma were likely to have on average of 5 kids.

  • @cagirlinportland NO! It is a fact that ppl in the US & Europe (non-muslim) are NOT producing enough children to sustain their race. Check this. U need 1 mother and 1 father to make 1 husband, then 1 mother & 1 father to make 1 bride So... 6 ppl to make 1 baby... So we must make at least 5 children to sustain the population. Hispanics are the only in US to meet this, In fact they R helping Whites & Blacks. 90% of children born in UK are Muslim. Have chiuldren! It is a Good thing!
  • @oneirishpoet I am sure that all has changed for the worse.... and I thought that maybe it was because the more educated you were the harder you worked so you didn't have time for kids.... but it looks more to me now (as I am older) that it is an educated choice.

  • like, fuckin, like, shit, like, fuckin, like, like, like,my fuckin frames for my fuckin glasses are like, fuckin plastic, like they might fall into the fuckin ocean and like, i better, like, stop fuckin breathing, cause when i do,like, carbon dioxide happens!

  • I'm pretty sure........

  • @MrChoppy750 ...aaaand Mr. Choppy is a HUGE fuckin' moron, yeay for Mr. HoppyDouche!

  • it is a rat race and WE ARE THE RATS THE VERMIN a few yrs ago shop keeper put everything in PAPER !!! CHEESE PAPER MEAT PAPER ECT ECT WOULD IT BE THAT HARD TO GO BACK TO PAPER !!!

  • @paulewing81 HEMP.

Hempen plastics are biodegradable. Hempen paper does less damage to the environment to grow and process than the timber industry.

  • Give a pig a plastic bag, the pig throws the bag on the street.

  • The best thing to do is to stop eating fish (I know that's beside the point in this video but it's relevant to previous comments) and stop consuming resources we don't need.

Of course the situation is a lot more complicated than to just say it, but if people would wake up we might start to get somewhere.

To those who say we can't live without doing this shit, look at evolution, our species survived just fine for millions of years without any of the technology we apparently 'depend' on now.

  • Mr. we are simply too much on this earth. We have to die.

  • Yeah, the earth can't contain the human population, that's true! but it would be a truly terrible thing if our species were to become extinct.

We do a lot of harmful things but we're also (afawk) the only species to have been able to actually understand why we, and everything else is here.. we don't have all the answers yet, but it's possible we could.

As Carl Sagan said, 'We are a way for the universe to know itself' -

There's a lot of good in this world, people have to wake up and see it

  • @scottie0904 its impossible for us to not live off plastc any more though if even just america switched to living off solely the enviroment (eat vegtibales and animals from the earth and not farms and ranches) both americas would be 100% extinct of all life other then human in only a few years thats south and north america

  • I am afraid to accept that we are really dependant on technology, at least if we want to live longer than 30 years as people did before the invention of plastic. Thanks plastic hygene is better. Plastic is the most ecological material, it was created with the intention of not having to change anymore furniture, dishes, etc. It´s created to long forever. It´s humans and their need of variation, the little word STATUS, to show each other who has the power to consume the most!

  • i dont get how we cant do anything really i mean we can use nets they use nets to catch thousands of fish we can use the plans that scoop up water there is so much we can do we use what we hav and work together we cant give up once its picked up just put it into a recycle plant and start that process we hav to try what ever and when ever

  • I just had dinner had some fish now I think I'm going to shit a water cap. lets fix this problem
