  • Hey, you can remove the print head without removing the entire metal 'track'. Just slide the print head to the left (all the way), and then wiggle it up and out.

  • I came here from bf3...Eh what the hell, I'll get to cats somehow.

  • @zmanfilms don't do it, or you'll be watching cats on youtube for at least 2 hours

  • I thought he was defusing a bomb until I read the title...

  • how the fuck did i get here from bf3 vids

  • @TheBMURPH2012 because you took an arrow to a capped hinge joint of an extremity

  • @1stb1 shut the fu... wait what? o you made that joke funny im impressed

  • Hey all. The maintenance mode commands work in a MFC 495CW as well. The firmware hasn't changed in that regard between these models. I'm running the power clean and power purge now. My blue inkflow is blocked: only one cyan square prints in the print test. Regular clean didn't do it. If this doesn't, I will do the "alcohol enema". :P

  • Dismantling my MFC-215c was the same except no grounding wire. The first 1:49 of this video enabled me to get to the ink absorber box for a Machine error 46. Thanks

  • Thank you. The though of spending 1-2 hours on this though is daunting.

  • Thanks for sharing this great ideo, I really enjoyed the insign you bring to the topicPrinter Head , awesome stuff!

  • My black ink clogged too. Saw the vid & thought, omg,my printer's a scrapheap!

    My EASY Method:

1.Take an ink injector needle like you can buy on Ebay & fill it with about 1/2" of rubbing alcohol.

2.Remove cartridge & semi-forcibly inject the alcohol into the ink hole where the cartridge sits.

Worked amazingly fast & surprisingly, didn't even see any messy run-off.

Don't know how good this is for the machine, but hell, I bought mine at Goodwill.

    No cleaning software w/this printer???

  • @altspringspat yeah i wanted to try using a syringe to inject alcohol but i didn't have needles. there is a cleaning function in the settings, have to go through the selections to find it.

  • @altspringspat I was going to disamble the printer. But with your bright idea and a syringe near by i didn´t have to opening it up :) Just carefully forcibly inject and the clog releases. Then i run the cleaning guide 3-4 times. Which had no success before. SO EASY ! Thanks altspringspat

  • @alfatune i was going to try that at first but i had no needles for my syringes :(

  • @alfatune You're welcome :)

  • how slide the PH to the left ?

  • Excellent!!

    Thanks for sharing!!

  • I have the exact model, Brother MFC 420CN, I followed 90% of your video, thank you so much, your video help tremendously. Mine did not work out perfectly at the end, because I did not want to deal with the trouble of disconnecting the tubes, which is easy to make huge mess. So I just rinsed and wiped the printer head. It improved though. The printer is cheap, I did this not to save money but to get enjoyment of fixing things.

    Thanks so much.

  • this music clam me down

  • the choice of background music for this video is terrible... duuno how people can read instructions with this background - noise :-)

  • I have a canon printer that is set up like this(ink tubes going to the PH) did you have

any prob's with air in the ink tubes on reassembly? i have and cant seem to shift it...

    any advice duderoo

ps nice vid..you went to a lot of trouble on this.props oh yeah

  • @Mpathize no sry, didn't have problems with that before, now using a HP officejet

  • @1stb1 I had a HP Photosmart,now i have a older Laserjet and MUCH HAPPER with it!

  • sorry for 7 month late reply, but the ink tubes, i'm assuming the ruber hoses, were disconnected when the print head was taken out, the tubes deliver ink into the print head, so the air goes not, and not in.

  • good idea

  • Just a quick comment to the people saying about not being able to access the print head to flush water to flush it out, if you remove the hoses from the printhead side carfully you can get a syring on it and flush it that way, or if you are adventure event he cartridge holder side, but you have to be careful about getting air into the head, i recommend after flushing to pump some ink into the head as well to have a less chance of getting air in it

  • Try a maintenance clean before you disassemble:

Press menu > Mono Start > 4x Arrow up after another. All lights will flash.

    1. Power clean - Press 7>6>4 >Mono Start.

    2. Power Purge: 7>6 >3 >Mono Start.

Press 9>9 to exit maintenance mode. Run a print quality test print.

  • @Pewit35 hm i never had a maintenance manual so i didn't know those codes. is that the same as regular cleaning or is this different? i know that regular cleaning uses up lots of ink. i don't use this printer anymore though

  • @1stb1 It's longer than normal cleaning

  • @Pewit35 My yellow ink head was jammed up, and after performing a Power Clean and a Power Purge I got my yellow head working again! Thanks!

  • @Pewit35 The yellow ink head on my MFC-490CW was jammed up, and after I followed the steps you gave it cleared up perfectly. Thanks!

  • @Pewit35 *************THANK YOU!!! per your advice i decided to try the automatic machine clean before taking anything apart...it worked!!! kudos to you!!!**************** i have a brother LC61 series

  • @Pewit35 *************THANK YOU!!! per your advice i decided to try the automatic machine clean before taking anything apart...it worked!!! kudos to you!!!**************** i have a brother LC61 series

  • @Pewit35 good idea but my printer does not have a keypad then how? just asking?

  • @ongchorcool

Then I suspect your printer is not a Brother MFC (Multi-Function Centre - print, fax, copy) printer but a regular Brother printer in which case these codes won't work. Try searching for your model number and maintenance codes.

  • @Pewit35 no fax

  • @Pewit35 is a dcp a multi function printer print scan copy fax

  • @Pewit35 You save my life! thank you very much!!!!!!!!!

  • @Pewit35 the code work with dcp145c

  • @Pewit35 i tried menu>mono start>4x up arrow it worked on my DCP 145C! i memorize this code just in case!

  • @Pewit35 i used the cleaning all option and it work the code works for my printer i memorized it for future use!

  • @Pewit35 EXCELLENT! After pulling this printer from storage, the print heads were clogged. I ran the standard cleaning cycle several times, but no luck. Out of desperation, I was about to disassemble the printer when I found this comment!!! I actually messed up and started with power purge, but worked great...my process was:

    [Menu]>[Mono Start]>[Up Arrow]>[Up Arrow]>[Up Arrow]>[Up Arrow]>

    [7]>[6]>[3]>[Mono Start]>

    [7]>[6]>[4]>[Mono Start]>

    [7]>[6]>[3]>[Mono Start]>

    [9]>[9]

  • @Pewit35 mean bro fanx!!!

  • I followed these instructions but i could not put my printer back together. I do not know if the print head is over both tracks and how is clipped to the rail. I understand you had your gloves full of ink but you are missing important pictures. This is my first time taken apart a printer and seeing a printer head. Can you add some print head cleaning and assembly proccess pictures. Thank you very much for your help!

  • @gsalee27 i don't have that printer anymore, sorry. it is a little tricky to get the head to fit back into the rails because you have to fit the rails back into the grooves just right. what i remember is first hook the print head into the front head and make sure it slides around smoothly. while you reattach the rear track, slip the print head back onto it at the very same time. make sure the printhead still slides around smoothly before locking in the rear rail.

  • which is the music of the first part?

  • i think it depends on the degree of blockage. the first couple times i tried soaking it, it fixed the problem. 3rd time it wouldn't help. i haven't used my mfc in a long time. using a fancy wireless HP officejet now. just a little more expensive with discounts and gift cards. we'll see in a few years if i got my money's worth

  • Very useful - but the proper way to get the print head out of the machine is easier. First unlock the head from the carriage by rotating the middle white gear wheel anticlockwise. Then slide the print head to the left and unclip the drive band from the spring loaded gear on the left. When the print head is far left it can be simply uncliped from its rail. I soaked my print head in 70% alcohol for 24 hours but only got minimal improvement.

  • I tried this and it doesnt solve anything. Only worse, it says INIT UNABLE 43. Oh well, I guess garbage time for my printer.

  • Thanks for posting these instructions, but I recommend that people don't waste their time (like I did) because the print head is plastic-riveted to an ink supply chamber and so you can't clean the print head by pushing hot water through the head with a large-mouth (3mm-ish) syringe from the ink supply side like many. It's impossible to flush the head from the nozzle side, & soaking it will not likely to work. I've cleaned & fixed many printer heads but this one can't be reasonably be cleaned.

  • On my MFC-640C the head had two screws and one rivet all of which easily came out without damage. I have that soaking in a zip lock bag and ink all over myself. Def go with the gloves on this one. Only took 10 min to take it apart thanks to this video. We'll see if it works.

  • In my experience, you usually can't unclog print heads by soaking them. You have to force hot water through them with a wide-mouth syringe. I order to do that, you have to be able access the print head, which doesn't seem possible on the MFC-420CN since it's plastic-riveted in.

  • wow my new officejet 6500 wireless is great, a bit noisey though. it does some kind of cleaning everytime i print or open the cover though, i hope it doesn't drain on the ink. the print head is removable from the front, no more disassembly for cleaning. 50$ with a 100$ gift certificate that was about to expire

  • Thanks for this vid! I think it will help me a lot when cleaning my printer heads on my Brother mfc-240c. After having added more ram to my Acer Aspire One 8,5" I should be able to do this too.

  • Um no i'm sorry but adding to a laptop is nothing compared to the dis assembly and PH servicing of an ink jet printer

  • I didn't say a laptop, I said a Aspire One netbook. You have to take it completely appart to get to the ram. Check this video, it will give you an idea about what I'm talking about: /watch?v=CO-Z7y9Ge4g&feature=related

  • Ok I'll admit where I'm wrong but that is a stupid design for a netbook, if they had the RAM slot under the keyboard then fine but what stupid designer decides the have the RAM slot at the bottom of the netbook and NOT make an easy access panel at the bottom? Thats just retarded but yea I still feel that the handling of a printer head is much more delicate

  • sorry but i haven't looked inside any other brother mfc's. tomorrow i'm going to upgrade my old usb HP officejet to a new officejet 6500 where you can easily remove the print head

  • Can you give us the instruction to clean a Brother DCP print head please ?

  • i jinxed myself i guess, last week the print head was clogged for the black ink. i tried cleaning it a lot but nothing came out. one way to test if it's fixed is to wipe tissue on the bottom to see if black comes out. i'm now using an HP all-in-one. the head is part of the cartridge so it's so much easier to take out and clean

  • This printer is complete crap. Just throw it away and buy another. Not worth the hassle. Good video.

  • well, it's been a little over a year since i washed the print head and i haven't had the same problem again. maybe i've been lucky though. i know that cheap printers are cheap for a reason

  • My printer said it wouldn't clean the head and I found this video. I want to thank you for taking the time to show how it is done. It seems like allot to do, but it still can be done thanks to your efforts. Did you ever find the right way to clean the head?

  • yes it's a lot of work, and there's a risk of damaging the parts. but there's no other way to get inside. you can try to get warranty if you still have it. if you don't, paying someoen to fix it might not be worth it if you can just b uy a new printer. so it's up to you if you want to try it or not. it worked for me twice for a coupl eyears, then the 3rd time i couldn't get it to work anymore, so i bought a new printer. an HP wireless officepro and it has a removable print head in the front

  • @1stb1 geoffrey5239 mentioned another way but i wasn't able to try it out since i moved and left the old printer with my parents

  • Hello,

I'm a victim of the above piece of crap. (Sorry, chap, but I think you should not have posted it as not everyone is able to manipulate machines like you do and come out problem free.)

It made my printer a piece of crap and now it's not able to print at all, when I was just trying to make the black ink print better, although it was still able to print the 3 different colours, although black was not printed well.

  • how about my brother DCP is it same method

  • did you also hear :O senator stevens was guilty of some charges and face 35 yrs in jail :O i don't really know him so dunno if he's a bad person or not, just know that the vocals from the 2nd song was taken from a mindless speech by him

  • Very good vid, I will try it as a last resort if my printer stops printing again. I was just about to dismantle my 420cn after trying to print several colour test pages. Only the black ink was working. Long story short, my colours started to work again. I suggest before you start taking your printer apart, try 'cleaning' the printer a couple times by reinserting the ink cartridges that aren't working. After about 5 'cleaning' cycles, I got the colours to work again! Hope this works.

  • yes, everyone, try using the cleaning function on your printer a lot of times before you try to open up your printer. if that's all it takes it might save you time, and could avoid potentially breaking something inside. i also just finished watching a 24 episode anime series called noein, kind of interesting, i liked it. started off a little slow. but many good ones do

  • hi i have a brother 440cn when i printout the text is double strike on plain paper but when i change the paper to transparencies it prints out okay but in light green can anyone give advice

  • i was planning on making a new vid or pdf with better pictures but i havent had any need to open up my printer again since 4 months ago, so i guess the cleaning really helped. i'm glad this is helping some ppl, the # of d/l's of the pdf is now over 100.

i'm not sure why the last slide isn't there, it also says the name of the 1st song, path by apocalyptica

  • Dude! Thanx alot for this vid! You saved me alot of time X3!! Yes! 3 MFC-420cn printers I have done today and they all work now!! Brother sent me 2 warranty units for not printing black and never sent return postage for the broken units lol so I have all 3. Apparently they dont want their pieces of shit back! Cheers!

  • whats the name of that last song?

anyways so my printer says theres a document jam so i open it up and theres nothing so i try to scan something and it says the same thing but the wierd thing is that it prints just fine so if any can help me with that please reply :D

  • i don't know who made the song but it's a remix of senator ted steven's rambling speech about internet policy. i believe the title is 'series of tubes.' you can probably find it on the net or here on youtube.

  • also, is the message ONLY "paper jam?" if you try Menu, Black Start, Up arrow 4 times, what error code does it give you? try googling that code.

there are a few things i can think of from reading around from google. either there's a very small piece of torn paper stuck inside somewhere. try looking again, might need tweezers if it's small. did you remove the scanner and top cover and look inside? there might be a paper sensor hole where tiny piece got stuck but i don't know where sensor is

  • i didn't look but you might be able to see the rollers better from the bottom or back of the printer. i'm not sure what else to do, me no expert. hope u can find the jam. i'm not sure if a factory settings reset would help. might be on the manual

  • other things might be the paper roller is a bit messed up. see if it's unaligned or something but i'm not sure how it should feel or look. i read on a forum that maybe the spring on the roller might be loose or broken too. there's also that magnetic clear plastic strip under the printer head, that might be misaligned too but i think it would give you machine error 50 when u do the maintenance mode thing that i mentioned

  • those are all the things i would try to do, and then i'd google around. do you still have a warranty? see what that can do for you. if there's nothing you can do i guess it's new printer time.

  • i just got back from walmart

and got a lexmark so i guess i wont have to open it up again

:D thanks for the help though it really is a helpfull vid

  • I have one of these though it hasn't given me any trouble yet but if it does I now know how to fix it.

I found they are good printers better then the HP and lexmark inkjets I owned before which eventually got disassembled for their stepper motors.

Can't believe how crappy HP has gotten because they used to make very good hardware I also have an old HP 4P which still works perfectly.

  • You didn't need to remove the silver metal rail. Push the PH all the way over to the left (if you were looking at the printer from the front) Then you can lift it out and you just have to remove the belt. Should make it a little easier I hope..

  • hmm i have to try that next time i clean it. hopefully i won't have to clean it soon though

  • Thanks. I've been looking for such an instruction for a long time. MFC-420CN printer is not perfect but buying its inks won't bankrupt me, and it does basic functions like printing doc and faxing fine which are all I need. I just wonder if it could better designed to make the printer head cleaning a bit easier, as you have demonstrated it almost required a complete disassembly of the whole printer!

  • yes, i agree it takes too much work to get to the printer head. i don't know if other manufacturers are like that for all-in-one printers. my brother has a HP printer, maybe i will look at it. i hope you were able to clean your priner

  • I was actually looking for hp printers, but some of their all-in-one have tiny but expensive cartridges, like those for c7280 which have only a few of hundred prints capacity. So far I haven't found one yet.

As for now, my temporary solution is to use several q-tips filled with rubbing alcohol to clean the nozzle where the black cartridge sits. Then after 2-4 cleaning/testprint cycles the printer can print black fine again, just for another while (a few weeks?)

  • was my thing ok? any questions? should i take better pics next time?
