I'm 18, studying to become a cook (in holland), but I actually chose it because I needed to make a career choice.. And I am slowly starting to regret it because i am creative, have a wide sense of thinking, ask 'why' on almost everything in my head constantly (it's sometimes annoying) and I too have the same problem as you have.
My class is filled with idiots, people who throw with bottles and paper all the time and procrastinate a lot (not doing homework)
I'm in college in my second semester of Architecture and everybody else is full of themselves, egotistical, condescendent and absolutely doesn't care one bit about architecture.
To bad the further in to the future we will go the less influence our new buildings will bring, due higher production and shorter lifespans (poor materials and quality)
I think you're glorifying architecture... in the end, anyone can become one, or better said, structural engineers would in my opinion be better architects.
Ever heard of the ETH in Zürich? Your thoughts on it?
An architect needs to be someone who cares about art, who will thus be able to transcend its visitors with the meanings of their buildings. And those breathtaking buildings that are so brilliant they inspire you as opposed to the depressing identical houses built everywhere... are the proof of how important architecture is.
I've been working in the office for 11 years now, and I am studying for my Architects exam in California, there are so many things to do at the office, like go measure an existing residence or a commercial space when a client signs a contract, you have to be able to write contracts and be good at designing commercial and residential projects. Check out my portfolio on my page. My cup of tea is Hill side design.
What kind of job can a guy who is waiting to start college get in an architect's office? I mean why would they hire someone with no professional training or experiences?
@gXite You don't necessarily need experience to do every job in an architects office. I would suggest calling a local small office, meet with their principal and tell them you'll work for free for a few months. Free help is hard to turn down and you'll get a taste for what the job is like.
Hello Mr.Patt,=) I stumbled upon your videos this morning while trying to search for videos related to the Architecture and Civil engineering.Your videos are Brilliant because they summarize main ideas in a 2-minute 'nutshell',with the benefit of your personal expertise.I am17 and in the forefront of having to choose what i want to study in University.Im thinking of doing Civileng for UG and then go on to get an MArch? Is this a bad/good idea? Please could you advice me on this matter? =)Thankyou!
@cookiemonster3912 I'm currently studying Civil Engineering and Architecture at university. To be a Masters in Architecture, you would need to study Architecture. You can't study Civil Engineering and then do Architecture as your masters. You moreover need to decide which profession you want to be. You can have both degrees but you simply don't have the time to be an architect and civil engineer.
Just found your channel randomly, and I absolutely loved it. But I felt that, if I was looking for a reason to be an architect, this video would not really answer my question. Firstly it talked mostly about the past, and the greatest, and what it means to other people; but I'd be more interested in what architecture will give to me, and what project I have a chance of handling and how I will relate to people directly.
Awesome you remembered Brasilia's Cathedral and National Museum! I'm stunned how Brazilian arhcitecture used to impress the world during modernism, unfortunately the architects from my country forgot what Niemeyer says about trying to find simplycity on free hand drawing and exploring material technologies
I don't know if you gonna believe or not but when I've decided to study architecture I didn't even knew how it was named... this... 'verb'... and I have surely not knew what architecture is about neither. I think many of those who attend architecture schools don't know what architecture means until they were in the position of practicing it.
Hi am 12 years old and I am thinking about becoming an architect. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind. What college did you go to? I'm not very good at drawing and i can't afford to go to a drawing class?Do you know what I could do to help prepare myself for architecture something architect like?
I like your channel but the intonation of your voice is starting to annoy me :S It has very repeating tones. Try talking in a more natural way, like you are actually talking to a person, and not trying to sell something :)
Apart from watching at buildings in the various media it is crucial to have a physical experience of space in relation to buildings. The feeling one gets from being inside and moving through a building is important. Climbing the stairs, looking out from the mezzanine, going as far up as possible in areas "for staff only" are thrilling experiences in old buildings that had no elevators. They give a real feel of the building plan and may challenge one's sense of orientation.
the videotitle should be something more like, the beauty of architecture. cause as ihaveallseeingeyes stated, it makes you think you try to convince everybody to become an architect ;d
Reason y I want 2 become an Architect Designer is how it's all about the image. If u can imagine a pic or some kind of inspired piece & make it ur own. I believe that's how u become passionate with this major. As a college student, I think it's best 2 chose something that u want 2 do for the rest of ur life & not having 2 deal so much about how much I'm gonna make. If ur creative, there's nothing 2 stop u.
this is my first year studying architecture and i havn't been fully dovated to it. i don't know why. so pretty much i fucked up in terms of Academic marks will this affect my future as an architecture big time? or it's just a minor setback?
I'm currently looking at how to become an architect here in the UK, but its so expensive and quite complicated for someone as myself.
I see in America you can just start up as a house/building designer without having to be officially registered as an architect, I wish that was the case here..
"For those looking for a reason to become an architect?"
I dont think that sentence makes sense at all.
It is very simple, if you want to be an architect then you already have the reason.
Wich is obviously because you love it.
If you dont know the reason of why you should be an architect, then its like thinking of being an architect without even having a single idea about it.
@ihaveallseeingeyes With over 100 videos I give lots of reasons 'why not' to become an architect. It was about time a video focused on reasons 'why'. Thanks for the note!
@ihaveallseeingeyes You're right of course, but for kids at school who haven't decided on a path yet, might be the type to research such a career (thus finding such a video as this).
I don't think the video would apply to anyone who hasn't ever looked up at a building and thought about its structural design :)
@Zero7evenX Hard to inspire a kid nowadays with architecture since they only get inspired by TV and the time-waste it has to offer,as well as other bullcrap that rings "fun" to their ears. But at least these videos here are helping the teenagers and adults who know what they want in life, so they deserve the attention.
@ihaveallseeingeyes It is not stupid to ask yourself why are you doing something, maybe you want to give a special meaning to what you do, not just doing it because you love it, otherwise you'll be a pure hedonist.
@ma3rui4si1 I dont agree. If you dont know why your doing something but you still do it, its because your true to yourself. There shouldnt be an explanation of why you love doing things.
@ihaveallseeingeyes The question was not why we love architecture, the question was why we do architecture. We can get philosophical about that and of course one answer could be because we love it, but is not the only one.
The last of your statements I am not so sure that is true. From what I know love is rational and you can see why you should love something. But if that is your believe I don't want to force it in some other way. And I don't expect you to have the same opinion as me. :)
@AwesomeCoasters:
And I think the problem here is that we both expected something great when we went to college, because well.. You hear a lot of good things about it.
But when you are actually on it, it doesn't really change much from normal school for a few years.. And we get disappointed.
Yes, I am interested I. Psychology too :p

That's ABSURD!
"If you don't know why..." = Ignorance
In essence, you said: "If you're ignorant but you still do it, its because you're true to yourself."
Remove "...but you still do it..." An unnecessary clause; restating the same idea, i.e. being ignorant.
So your statement really says this: "If you're ignorant, it's because you're true to yourself."
That's ABSURD!
