@georgef551 I work at one of the Maine Hannafords and frequently close. The closing bagger is supposed to lock the door when the store closes, when told by the closing shift leader. This particular store probably has bad management--I'll admit I am not a "company person"--some of the stores do have bad managers. The one I work at is one of the better ones despite that it did not get the full remodeling job, having 1970s style cash registers! We close at 11.
My brother has countless tales of his exploits in retail hell, including a man who once stopped in to his (ex) place of employment for two packs of gum and a muffler -- a good TWO HOURS after closing time. I wouldn't wish the "graveyard" shift on anyone, much less my curmudgeonly neighbor.
At least it was a good exploration, and also, on yesterdays oppressive heatwave, how did you survived it?

Next to the AC unit.
I don't mond the heat all that much. Just drinking more water/fruit juices.

That's weird. My town's Hannaford closes at 10 PM.

@elevatorsonly
The manager here is dumb enough to NOT lock the doors at 9. Serves them right.
Your area might be different.

@georgef551 Interesting. My sign says that it closes at 10:00 PM everyday, and that's when they lock the doors here.

Sometimes, vintage is a good thing.
There's a Hannaford in Ayer, MA that outside of their painted signage, the round building and character is still there, which I believe is late 60's.
