Thats like me saying that Vai can't play acid rock like Jimi Hendrix, its an even comparison. I love Steve Vai's guitar playing, but it isn't the same as everyone elses. Think about it like this:

Jimi Hendrix existed in the 60s, compare his complexity to the people of that era. Now if you compare the newer techniques and styles there are of today, you'll notice that it has changed.

Vai is far more technically sound than Satch. Joe gave up trying to be technical early on in his career in favor of focussing on melody/ songwriting etc. The musical value of technique is a matter of opinion, as is playing with "emotion".

Lots of people think the fastest guitar player is Michael Angelo Batio. I think Malmsteen is faster a little bit. FOR ME the most melodic and technically advanced player is Randy Rhoads. But things like "melody" are a matter of musical taste.... (IMHO)
