I think that Kate Batts was really a witch. I found long time ago information about Jewish magic in an old book and the book was written to help some daring witches and warlocks to make contact with demons and they send the demon to kill or torment a person. I red almost the whole book and it was interesting , many different demon's name and even specific words to summoning them. Yeah on the cat... Hey, I was going to wrtite a screenplay based on the Bell Witch Story - then they came out with "American Haunting" which was just total BS - it angered me. Besides - the movie was so not scary - if they just stuck with the actual story it would be very frightening. I thnink I'll write the screenplay and I'll stick to the actual story.
I read that John went to New Orleans once for some reason. While their he was involved in some sort of medium. This is thought to be how it all started. Pat Fitzhugh is an asshole. I met him, he stalked me. He even tried to get me dumped from college. I was a huge fan of his website. He did a signing at Hastings in Murfreesboro so I went to meet him and buy an autographed book. No it's NOT a myth...... It's in my family and can be traced back to the Bell family. An American Haunting was completely UNTRUE to the real story COMPLETELY. #2 you may have visited the site of the old Bell farm and house but the original buildings and the furniture that was in them are all long gone. Buildings that sit there now were built on site or brought in from other places.
I don't actually believe in ghosts or polterguists, yet I live not to far from the old Bell farm and cave area. From what I've heard in stories, read in history papers and archives, I do have to draw a couple possibilities, it is possible for a spirit of some kind to manifest and haunt a family, it is also possible that the spirit was an old indian or runaway slave that used the cave as a home and scare people away but by the timeline the spirit should return between 2017-2048 if it is real

I used to live in Clarksville, TN, not too far away. I heard the story when I was young but the version I heard had something to do with John Bell clearing some land and either covered up or cleared away an Indian burial site, I think. But I do remember it having to do with Indian spirits and local living Indians that were unhappy about it.
Some friends and I went to the farm in the early 90's, I was in my 20's then. Nothing remarkable I can remember.
@roakamun I also heard that the true Bell House is private and not open for public tours and is now owned by the Indian Tribe that the grave site belonged to originally , but that's just hearsay on my part. I can tell you that the house itself is dilapidated and almost falling in. The well is uncovered and the entire property looks like it has never seen a lawnmower or a bush hog. The one that allows tours on the property is close, but not the original.

Also, the seemingly "sexual" attraction poltergeists appear to have toward pre teen girls is rather odd. I personally don't see how the spirit of a dead person could be attracted to pubescent teens. This does however, somewhat coincide with the biblical story of angel/human copulation that occurred before the great deluge. Thus, I've come to believe that poltergeists are nothing other than fallen angels. I think this is the best conclusion.
From my study, I've come to believe that poltergeists are not human spirits, but demonic entities. Human spirits usually don't cause that kind of ruckus and won't harm the individual...(in fact, I don't believe that they have that ability). Poltergeists almost always do.

It's called "the Bell Witch:An American Haunting being the eyewitness account of Richard Powell' by Brent Monahan. The book says there was no Bell Witch, but a poltergeist manifested by the daughter Betsy she was molested by her father according to an eyewitness account but you have to read the book.

Yeah on the cat... Hey, I was going to wrtite a screenplay based on the Bell Witch Story - then they came out with "American Haunting" which was just total BS - it angered me. Besides - the movie was so not scary - if they just stuck with the actual story it would be very frightening. I thnink I'll write the screenplay and I'll stick to the actual story.

I read that John went to New Orleans once for some reason. While their he was involved in some sort of medium. This is thought to be how it all started. A short while aftet he returned to Adams,Tn he had the encounter with the bird. And slowly but surely strange things began to happen around the house and the slave houses as well. They owned slaves who were also frightened.

I read it started a few yrs before that. 1811. But i could be thinking of something else. John bell first gad an encounter with a strange Like bird he shot at while hinting. It was bigger than any natuve bird and looked very dark and unbird like. It looked at him with "big empty eye" as he put it. While he shot at it. Flying around looking at him as he did. It started after that day.

Since you nor I nor anyone alive today was there all we have to go on is other people's research. I like to read lots and take a lot of it with a grain of salt but certain elements are a matter of historical record and that can't be too far from the truth.
Not matter how you cut it it's a fascinating story, no? :)

One of the closet descendant's I have heard about was a Dr. Charles Bailey Bell, he died in 1945, so all of these so called direct descendants would have to be related to him very tightly...which I doubt half of them even are.

Pat Fitzhugh is an asshole. I met him, he stalked me. He even tried to get me dumped from college. I was a huge fan of his website. He did a signing at Hastings in Murfreesboro so I went to meet him and buy an autographed book. Things were fine for a while and then he began posting pics of me that he had made at the signing and was putting I was his girlfriend! I was 19 years old!!!! He was 44!!!! He is a NUTJOB! I had to file a police report against him to keep him off my school campus!!!!

Thank you so much for posting the REAL story & not promoting that piece of crap movie American Haunting. I watched it ONE TIME. After that.... NEVER AGAIN. It's probably one of the WORSE most jumbled up nonsensical rip off movies of a real event I have ever SEEN. & I MEAN that. They screwed up my families pain & anguish is the way I see it. No it's NOT a myth...... It's in my family and can be traced back to the Bell family. An American Haunting was completely UNTRUE to the real story COMPLETELY. I have been fascinated by it for a while ever since my family told me that we were related to the Bell family. I am currently tracing my family lineage BACK to make SURE that it is true. We r related to a Roxy Anne(Ann) Bell who is said to be traced even further to the Bell's. Hopefully I will have the patience to do the geneaology sheets.

@zst9991 - #1 it's not possible that you're related to the Bell Witch because the Bell Witch is a demonic entity.. purely spirit and was never at any point in time and space a human.
#2 you may have visited the site of the old Bell farm and house but the original buildings and the furniture that was in them are all long gone. Buildings that sit there now were built on site or brought in from other places.

I don't actually believe in ghosts or polterguists, yet I live not to far from the old Bell farm and cave area. From what I've heard in stories, read in history papers and archives, I do have to draw a couple possibilities, it is possible for a spirit of some kind to manifest and haunt a family, it is also possible that the spirit was an old indian or runaway slave that used the cave as a home and scare people away but by the timeline the spirit should return between 2017-2048 if it is real

I have a poltergeist, he drives me insane. He twists the lightbulb on my ceiling fan and make the light dim and get really bright, and now he's learned to mess with the dishes while I'm trying to the dishes. He is very docile though, he's been around for a few years and he's just a trickster, no violent acts.

Liz, Lizzy, Eliza, Lisbeth, Betty, Betsy, Beth. and all of their different spellings. like Robert (Rob, Robby, Bob, Bobby, sometimes Bert,although that's usually used for Bertrim I think). I used to live in Clarksville, TN, not too far away. I heard the story when I was young but the version I heard had something to do with John Bell clearing some land and either covered up or cleared away an Indian burial site, I think. But I do remember it having to do with Indian spirits and local living Indians that were unhappy about it.
Some friends and I went to the farm in the early 90's, I was in my 20's then. Nothing remarkable I can remember.

@roakamun I also heard that the true Bell House is private and not open for public tours and is now owned by the Indian Tribe that the grave site belonged to originally , but that's just hearsay on my part. I can tell you that the house itself is dilapidated and almost falling in. The well is uncovered and the entire property looks like it has never seen a lawnmower or a bush hog. The one that allows tours on the property is close, but not the original.

Also, the seemingly "sexual" attraction poltergeists appear to have toward pre teen girls is rather odd. I personally don't see how the spirit of a dead person could be attracted to pubescent teens. This does however, somewhat coincide with the biblical story of angel/human copulation that occurred before the great deluge. Thus, I've come to believe that poltergeists are nothing other than fallen angels. I think this is the best conclusion.

From my study, I've come to believe that poltergeists are not human spirits, but demonic entities. Human spirits usually don't cause that kind of ruckus and won't harm the individual...(in fact, I don't believe that they have that ability). Poltergeists almost always do.

BlackCatMambo, I noticed the book you were reading from was an old book. I have read a new book that tells the "real" story I was wondering if you have read it? It's called "the Bell Witch:An American Haunting being the eyewitness account of Richard Powell' by Brent Monahan. The book says there was no Bell Witch, but a poltergeist manifested by the daughter Betsy she was molested by her father according to an eyewitness account but you have to read the book.
