Try to push Accelerator when starting... ( when you feel the engine is some sort of started to work) it helps with about -28'C :) and try twice heat up spiral ;) before starting ;)
Here in Brazil we have a lot of 2 fuel cars (Corolla and New Civic) running Gas and Alcohol. You refuel with full alcohol or Gas, or the two in any proprortion. The alcohol here have a 5% of water in your composition. But temps here is between 18C and 37C!
I noticed a delay when the glow plug light went out. It would of started first turn of the key if you hadn of delayed. When the light goes out the glow plugs have done there job and start coolin back down. Turn the key off and back on again to re-heat. Only works on Di models or fire the second the light goes out. Its perfectly normal for it to run like that when cold. Let it idle for a few minutes to get the oil up into the turbo and warm up the block. Very important.
Sorry, but you're wrong. When the light goes out, it only means you can start the engine. The glow relay turns off after few km's @ that temperature (manual states at tempperature of 70'C of coolant), you can hear when it turns of if you're driving slowly at that moment.
@terespl its a bit pointless the glow plugs staying on when the engine has fired up. But then again iv never had to start any of mine in that cold of temp. Iv heard the reasons glow plugs burn out is because they dont turn off in time and over-heat. The time period can be set for the glow plugs threw the e.c.u. Relays have also been found faulty on the 2.2di. You should hear the relay click from in behind the glovebox the second the light goes out on the dash or a few seconds after. Not km's.
@Fludy676 Actually you'll find that it's purely for emissions purposes. Glow plugs don't burn out because they stay on, they're subjected to much higher temperatures inside the combustion chamber. They just get carbonated to the point that they don't provide enough heat to fire the engine. I have an older Peugeot 306 and the glow plugs stay on for a few minutes after starting for the same reason, though it makes very little difference and just saps power and overloads your battery/alternator.
@MREURONCAP You're welcome! Yeah, differences between cars in each country and continent. In Europe, it's common that about thirty to forty percent of cars are diesel, so it's very common to have driven both.
@MREURONCAP That means the glow plugs are heating up, when you see the light go out, the glow plugs have done their job and you can proceed to crank the engine. All diesel cars have this.

You can hear the sound of clicking in 2 cases:
1) you don't start the engine for 20 or 30 seconds - don't remember know
2) after the coolant temperature is more than 70C degrees (which happens after few km's)

@MREURONCAP Sign for glow plugs heating the cylinders. Diesel cars have it, gas cars don't have glow plugs.

No it's not normal. 2 days before I failed to start her (low battery), so I brought the battery home and charged it fully.
Usually when it's cold, she starts like in my another cold start movie @ -15'C
