Thanks, Olive. Well, I hope that the student's in my daughter's class feel the same way. I tried to keep it short so that I wouldn't bore them to sleep. Maybe they will remember a tip or two that will prove useful to them sometime in the future. Ray
Excellent information Ray. I might also add as a general note that Rome was not built in a day, and often times one does not get "the" job until one has been working for some time. Finally, NEVER quit a job without notice, and never give notice without having another job lined up. It is always easier to get another job if you are already employed.
Hi Terry, thanks. You mention some good points which I have often repeated to others, but ...
One day, after 3 1/2 years at a job I hated (the work was fine but management was horrible) I broke both of these rules - quit on the spot without having another job lined up. Oh, the pain! This was the most irrational thing I have ever done during my career, and I wouldn't recommend it, but sometimes (hopefully very rarely) you just gotta say "Screw It", or at least that's how I felt at the time.
My most memorable interview was for my previous employment as a safety technician. They asked me a trick question. 'Manholes used to be square, and they are now round. Why is this?' ( I'll let you stew on that... but I got it right)
Then at the end they asked why they should hire me. I put it quite frankly, 'Because I'm the best person for this job'. Then I explained why. I knocked them off their chair... and I was in the position by the next week!
Thank you, Linnea. My guess about the manhole covers was that round made more sense, since pipes are round. Then I looked it up, and the reason I found was that round manholes can be rolled and require less effort to move once removed. Is that the answer you gave?
It sounds like you made quite a positive impression during the safety technician interview. I'm glad to hear it. Those types of victories really give one a boost in confidence. Ray
I could imagine that the manhole answer you found applies as well. But the answer they were looking for was that square ones can fall in, round ones can't.
