Wow I saw this in 7th grade (2003 or so), and I thought it was one of the best films I had ever seen lol. I didn't remember the title for ages until now. I figured it had "Watcher" in it.

I just watched this for the first time! My mum told me that she used to be sooo scared of it when she was little and she just remembered the title the other day so I downloaded it and watched it today and OMG it creeped the he'll out of me! I was scared to see what happened next in every scene, especially when Ellie was like possessed! And I'm fifteen going on sixteen!! Although, mind you, I'm not good with scary things. The scariest I have seen is Black Swan.

I saw this movie almost 30 years ago when I was ten years old. Actually, it was a darn good film. Years later I ran into my old 5th grade teacher somewhere and she told me that she never showed it to any class again because she felt it was too scary. Too bad, I thought. I think about 5th or 6th grade is the perfect age for a child to enjoy this thriller.

@MiyahSummer Less than Harry Potter. British director John Hough was known for atmospheric suspense. He directed THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE & British TV action shows such as THE AVENGERS. Most notably he directed the first two original WITCH MOUNTAIN movies, ESCAPE and RETURN which also dealt with parapsychology. WATCHER featured Kyle Richards and WITCH MOUNTAIN featured her sister Kim Richards (who also appears as a ghostly apparition in WATCHER). Both WATCHER and RETURN features Bette Davis.

What I particularly like at this film is the fact that it leaves plenty of room for interpretation. The watcher is never visually shown. Although the viewer constantky feels that there is something out there, but it never shows up (except for the alternative ending, that they didn't use in the movie for gods sake. The alternative ending would have ruined the whole atmosphere. This is not a classic horror movie but a good Disney-made horror story for children and adults as well.

Amazing that this was a Walt Disney film! This was a period - 1979 to 1983 - when they were experimenting with more mature films, because their kiddie faire wasn't doing it.

Spooky as it looks, it wasn't rated any higher than PG. Disney has never gone into R-rated territory, except with their Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures division.
