Eazy man you are both kinda right its not a bass and it not a regular six string. Fender made these back in the 60s it is a baritone guitar. So its somewhere in between both Bass and regular guitar. Do some research. PEACE*
@albclef It's not a baritone. The LOWEST note is the same as a bass, so it's a bass. That is why the particular guitar in question is called a "Fender Bass VI" and why it also says "Electric Bass Guitar" on the headstock.
To finally end the argument, it is a bass AND a guitar, but only because it is a bass guitar, and bass guitars ARE guitars.
It is a short scale, 6-string, electric bass guitar tuned E-e. There should be a one-word name for them, but at present there isn't.
Eazy man you are both kinda right its not a bass and it not a regular six string. Fender mad these back in the 60s it is a baritone guitar. So it somewhere in between both Bass and regular guitar. Do some research. PEACE*
its a 6 string guitar tuned EADGBE as opposed to the 6 string electric basses that are tuned BEADGB, but what truly makes it baritone is when artists use thicker gauge guitar strings instead of the standard bass stings. it all depends on the strings.
It's a bass with two higher strings than usual, with guitar-like string spacing. Therefore, it kinda looks like a guitar. It's still a bass. Yes, the argument is over.
i think it is pretty much mute whether you want to call it a bass ,a bass guitar ,an electric bass ,or a bass fiddle.....its a neat old fender and if its been taken care of it would be a joy to play, to own ,and love.....i call it a nice ass old jagbass
To settle the argument. Baritone guitars are tuned half an octave below standard guitar tunings, bass guitars are tuned a whole octave so So the Bass VI an 6 string bass tuned "E to E" (in other words, the extra two strings are on the bottom instead)
its a guitar with a different tuning. no different from a heavy metal band playing in drop a or another odd tuning. this is a pointless argument and i feel stupider from watching this.
If anyone is familiar with The Cure, you know Robert Smith uses 6 string bass guitars frequently. This is that. And everyone down below talking about the Fender Bass VI, they are right. Regardless, Mark is great and 6 string bass guitars are great! Amazing tone.
its not a bass or standard guitar. it is a BASS VI. the closest description would be a 'bajo sexto' but that covers classical instruments and fender thus traslated that into english for the modernised electric version. another name would be a baritone guitar, but that has very recently come to mean a fifth or fourth lower. bajo sextos are often called baritone, as well as most sixties low octave E-E guitars such as danelectros and gretsches. and a jag has 4 strings? has your head fallen off!
Its a fender Bass VI........not a baritone.....Bass VI...6 string bass....A bass with 6 strings,,and thats Bass not bass like the fish but Bass like. Low rumbling Bass...This has been brought to you by Dr. Stupid......
ever think of this? either its a 6-string bass or its a guitar plugged into an octave pedal. if you dont know what that is, it is a pedal like a distortion pedal that will make your guitar sound 1 or 2 octaves lower. if you dont know what an octave is, that when there is two of the same note, just one is deeper or higher, but a guitar tuner will see these as the same note.
You say in your video that the Fender Bass VI is not similar to a Jaguar guitar. It looks very similar to Jaguar body. It also has three custom Jaguar single-coil pickups. True enough it is a six string bass, Fender Vl, but there are similarities to a Jaguar guitar. Maybe the definition of similar is the problem.
it is actually a bass that is tuned like a guitar but an octave lower. so its eadgbe. its a bass with thinner strings, 2 higher strings, and a shorter 30" scale. this is my favorite bass ever. some r right in saying its a baritone guitar because it can be tuned like a baritone guitar which some people do. so its either a regular bass with 2 higher strings. or a bass tuned as a baritone guitar.
MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT if you look at the "i miss you" live at pepsi smash, mark is playing a bass that has 6 strings and it looks like a guitar which is the one shown in the video. this answers that question
Or, more commonly known as just a bass. =| You don't have to say "I play the bass guitar" or "I play the electric guitar". Everyone knows what you're talking about if you just say bass or electric.
Actually, 6-string basses are tuned BEADGC, and normally use strings of gauge .130-.032, give or take .01 for different tensions. The Fender Bass VI is tuned as stated above, and uses string gauge .095-.025. Also, 6-string basses normally have a 34" or longer scale, and the Bass VI has a 30". This results in much lower string tension on the Bass VI, more akin to a standard guitar. : )
The first 6-string basses were tuned down to E, and they were the same scale length (30") as other short-scale bass guitars like the Gibson EB-0, Hofner violin bass, Epiphone Rivoli, Fender Mustang, etc.. The long-scale 6-string bass, normally tuned down to B, was a later invention
Hahaha, how can you be so stupid? Look it up ANYWHERE. A bass is only one octave lower. en.wiki pedia.org/wiki/Bass_guitar
So if basses are only one octave lower, where's the octave that baritones are tuned to? Oh that's right, it doesn't exist. Baritones are tuned a fourth or a fifth deeper, if you mistake that for an octave then you must be completely tone deaf.
en.wiki pedia.org/wiki/Baritone_guitar
Anyway the low E on the Fender Bass VI is the SAME as the E on a bass.
@eyeball226 In case I can't tell? Goddamn, and you think someone who is hardly active in the music community is stupid. YOU need grammar lessons. Idiot.
While that was a mistake, it was hardly a grammatical error. It's not a lack of knowledge that I despise, but someone who knows they don't know what they're talking about and still insists on talking bullshit.
@nova0052 It is actually a 6 string bass guitar. It has a 30.3" scale neck (c.f. a baritone 28.5) and as you pointed is tuned an octave below, where a baritone is typically tuned to B standard. Fender also make a baritone Jaguar, but this isn't it.
@Mushman34 ...and just when i thought the replies to my comment had ended XD
my other comment got buried somewhere in the flame wars but I actually noted this. Combined with the light strings (compared to a standard scale Bass Guitar), this gives the Bass VI a feel more akin to a regular electric guitar. This instrument seems tailored for chording, arpeggiating, and solos like a standard six-stringer. Some versions even include a switch to cut low frequencies...
@nova0052 i highly disagree with your comment on the instrument name. i believe it can be properly called a "bass", as it is not modeled after an acoustic guitar, but a double bass, or upright bass. the only reason it is called a "bass guitar" is because it is the electric counterpart to an electric guitar, and is used similarly. not until the early 1960s did they start making an acoustic bass guitar. so yes, it can be called a "bass" properly
@lavaxtris1 Actually, Leo Fender invented the 4-string instrument we all love as a new toy for guitar players, not double bassists. Since it is the bass counterpart to an electric guitar, it makes the most sense to call it an "electric bass guitar" ("electric bass" can refer to uprights with pickups). With regards to strings, length and pitch are just as important as gauge. Baritone guitars are built with longer necks than normal.
yeah its like the cross between a bass and a guitar i have a schecter hellcat VI bass guitar thats like it...its pretty mucha short scale bass but the extra (thinner) strings make it more musical and more ready to play chords... great for guitarists that want to write bass lines and bassists that want to do more melody, great fun
OK, You are all either idiots of not stating the simple facts.
The Fender VI existed before the "typical six string bass Tuned B-"
Then Fender VI tuning being one octave below a regular guitar; those 4 low strings are tuned (listen closely) TO THE SAME NOTES AS A STANDARD 4-STRING BASS!
The bass VI was a six string bass... however a typical six string bass is tuned BEADGC with a scale length of 34-36 inches (the industry standard for bass is 34"). The bass VI had a 30" scale which was less than a bass, but more than a typical guitar. The string spacing was also tighter and the instrument allowed the player to use guitar chords that would otherwise be difficult to play on a regular bass guitar. The bass VI's tuning was the same as a guitar (EADGBE) except it was an octave lower.
you obviously didn't read the comment, becausse the keyword I used there was "like," it's tuned 1 interval lower than a normal guitar, making it like a 7 string, only without the high C string.
Moron, a 7 string is tuned BEADGBE. The BASS VI is tuned EADGBE one OCTAVE lower than a normal guitar, like a 4 string bass with a high B and E strings.
this guitar is tuned like a 6 string bass, beadgc, just add a fourth to the low and high end. Its not an octave lower guitar, its actually a bass with thinner strings and more guitar sound.
Does it really matter? For bassists, it offers an extended range and different tone and style, and for guitarists it acts as a deep baritone instrument with otherwise relatively familiar characteristics.
I wasn't aware people were wasting time arguing about this. That seems kind of silly to me.
rOBERT SMITH PLAYS ONE !!!! FOR PEOPLE WHO DON KNOW WHO THAT IS ITS THE SINGER OF THE CURE. and the last albm they sucked up to him to recored on one o their songs so i take it mark deided to try i :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ALL YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING RETARDED!!!..That Is A Jaguar..Look at the fender website..its a fuckin guitar..if you look at the pepsi smash video mark is using a Jaguar in droped C tuning with a CAPO in the second fret
k heres an explanation. that is not a guitar it is a bass VI.its an improvment over the six string bass. it is however one octave above a normal bass and one below a normal guitar. Sounds like a bass plays like a guitar.
I play a great many instruments and have studied music theory for a few years and a bass guitar is only one octave below a normal guitar. String sizes has nothing to do with anything. You're an idiot.
I'm 22 and play music strictly as a hobby. I do however, feel qualified to call you on your bullshit. The strings of a 4 string bass are one octave lower than the 4 low strings of a guitar. There is no octave in between for the Bass IV to be tuned to. The 6 strings of a Bass VI are tuned one octave lower than the 6 strings of a normal guitar. The Bass VI does have a brighter sound than a full scale bass mainly because it uses guitar pickups, it is however the same pitch as a bass.
its a bass guitar in the same way theres a baritone guitar...the bass vi is just longer than a baritone so the tuning is an octave lower than a standard tuned guitar, theres even guitar tuned octave higher too, its a bass in the sense that its same pitch as a regular bass but its played like a regular guitar
one way you can tell that it is a bass it by the position of the bridge, if it is near the middle of the body its a Guitar, if it is near the the edge of the body it is a Bass.
It is just a six string Bass which has a smaller neck and thinner strings.
you could say so yeah, BUT on this case what you said is just so contradictory and does not solve the question because even though IT IS A SIX STRING BASS as you said... the bridge in this case is near the middle of the body, like in a guitar, the end part or tail piece, or whatever you wanna call it, is just that the tail piece and it happens to be a tremolo... But the bridge is actually the metal part behind the first pick up..
Yeah i guess you are right, i wasnt really looking properly, but from what i understand is that it is tuned an octave lower than a standard guitar which is how a bass is tuned, it has a 30" scale neck as opposed to a a p or jazz bass which has 34", and the standard strings go from .095-.024, hope that has helped
If you want to hear a perfect example of this bass, please have a listen to the first track of Aerosmiths album 'Rocks', the tune is called 'Back In The Saddle'. Joe Perry used one of these. In later years he used an Ernie Ball (MusicMan) Silhouette Bass. There's a video of it here on YT.
surprisingly no... both bass and guitar are tuned in 440 hz A. Bass sounds lower but it is the same. Check it with a tuner, both A's are tuned in 440hz. If guitar was an octave higher it would say 880hz.
You have no idea about tuning. The 440hz is the reference pitch for an A above middle C in piano. Bass tuning is an octave below guitar. You should really learn some music theory.
check it with a metronome smartass... an octave bellow 440hz is 0hz you can't even percive such a low sound, and it is not the middle C it is the third C... you should learn a little more about piano also
An octave below 440hz is 220hz. An octave below that is 110hz, below that 55hz, and so on. The octave of a specific note vibrates exactly twice as fast as the prime.
Well no, how would I know your date of birth to even do that calculation?
According to your youtube profile you're currently 29. Looks like someone else doesn't know their own age and can't do maths. Your comment said "2 years ago" when I commented on it.
My god. Such stupidity means I can't even concentrate on this reply properly but I will try. The 440 you saw was the reference pitch, we tune the A above middle C to 440Hz and then everything else to that. The A string on a guitar is actually 110Hz, that's two octaves lower than 440Hz. The A string on a bass is 55Hz, that's an octave lower than 110Hz. Your IQ is probably about 27, that's a lot lower anyone else who commented on this video. Congratulations!
Eazy man you are both kinda right its not a bass and it not a regular six string. Fender made these back in the 60s it is a baritone guitar. So its somewhere in between both Bass and regular guitar. Do some research. PEACE*

cptnjacksteiner 3 years ago
Does it really matter? For bassists, it offers an extended range and different tone and style, and for guitarists it acts as a deep baritone instrument with otherwise relatively familiar characteristics.
I wasn't aware people were wasting time arguing about this. That seems kind of silly to me.

ok guys. it aint a VINOS. its a baritone guitar. its a long scale guitar tuned down and octave. ok???
missinglink182 4 years ago
is it so damn hard to see that Fender logo on the headstock??
paulsimonon82 3 years ago
k heres an explanation. that is not a guitar it is a bass VI.its an improvment over the six string bass. it is however one octave above a normal bass and one below a normal guitar. Sounds like a bass plays like a guitar.
pplus0440 4 years ago
@pplus0440
Haha, normal 4 string basses are only one octave below a guitar. =/
The EADG strings on this thing are the same, it just has extra strings higher than that.
eyeball226 1 year ago
@eyeball226 i own one. and i was right. dont believe me? go look up string sizes on musicians friend. smartass
pplus0440 1 year ago
@pplus0440
I play a great many instruments and have studied music theory for a few years and a bass guitar is only one octave below a normal guitar. String sizes has nothing to do with anything. You're an idiot.
eyeball226 1 year ago
@eyeball226 well congratulations eyeball you studied music theory and everyone is impressed youll prob grow up to be a rock star for sure
pplus0440 1 year ago
@pplus0440
The Bass VI does have a brighter sound than a full scale bass mainly because it uses guitar pickups, it is however the same pitch as a bass.
eyeball226 1 year ago
he used this bass on "i miss you" live on pepsi smash i looks like he is playing a guitar but i guess its that bass but thats not his signature bass
drumer93 4 years ago
its a bass guitar in the same way theres a baritone guitar...the bass vi is just longer than a baritone so the tuning is an octave lower than a standard tuned guitar, theres even guitar tuned octave higher too, its a bass in the sense that its same pitch as a regular bass but its played like a regular guitar

pplus0440 4 years ago
one way you can tell that it is a bass it by the position of the bridge, if it is near the middle of the body its a Guitar, if it is near the the edge of the body it is a Bass.
It is just a six string Bass which has a smaller neck and thinner strings.
melvinospork 4 years ago
you could say so yeah, BUT on this case what you said is just so contradictory and does not solve the question because even though IT IS A SIX STRING BASS as you said... the bridge in this case is near the middle of the body, like in a guitar, the end part or tail piece, or whatever you wanna call it, is just that the tail piece and it happens to be a tremolo... But the bridge is actually the metal part behind the first pick up..
shamuel27 3 years ago
Yeah i guess you are right, i wasnt really looking properly, but from what i understand is that it is tuned an octave lower than a standard guitar which is how a bass is tuned, it has a 30" scale neck as opposed to a a p or jazz bass which has 34", and the standard strings go from .095-.024, hope that has helped
melvinospork 3 years ago
If you want to hear a perfect example of this bass, please have a listen to the first track of Aerosmiths album 'Rocks', the tune is called 'Back In The Saddle'. Joe Perry used one of these. In later years he used an Ernie Ball (MusicMan) Silhouette Bass. There's a video of it here on YT.

Joe Perry is playing his Fender Bass VI and actually plays LEAD on it in the song. Live show way back in '88!

the bass was made so fender could enter the six string market
BradyLawrence13 4 years ago
This bass GUITAR was maded so guitarists could double on bass. It has the same E-A-D-G string as a P bass. That is one octave lower than a guitar.
GarryGoodman 4 years ago
That is a 1963 Fender Bass VI. It is exactly like a guitar, in that it has six strings. But is tuned an octave lower.
pijot1993 4 years ago
surprisingly no... both bass and guitar are tuned in 440 hz A. Bass sounds lower but it is the same. Check it with a tuner, both A's are tuned in 440hz. If guitar was an octave higher it would say 880hz.
adrian5b 4 years ago
You have no idea about tuning. The 440hz is the reference pitch for an A above middle C in piano. Bass tuning is an octave below guitar. You should really learn some music theory.
richirare 4 years ago
check it with a metronome smartass... an octave bellow 440hz is 0hz you can't even percive such a low sound, and it is not the middle C it is the third C... you should learn a little more about piano also
adrian5b 4 years ago
An octave below 440hz is 220hz. An octave below that is 110hz, below that 55hz, and so on. The octave of a specific note vibrates exactly twice as fast as the prime.

Well no, how would I know your date of birth to even do that calculation?
According to your youtube profile you're currently 29. Looks like someone else doesn't know their own age and can't do maths. Your comment said "2 years ago" when I commented on it.
29 -2 =? hurrrrrrrrrrrrrr
eyeball226 1 year ago
@adrian5b

You're all idiots! He actually recorded the song on a Taylor Acoustic 4 string bass. I saw it on an MTV special.
