When my mom was a kid, she bought this album used from a library for 25 cents. She loved it as a kid, and so did I (once I was old enough to work the record player needle). Never underestimate what two bits could do to impact your life! lol
This is a really cool song-the lyrics and the beat have such an attitude to them! I also love the album cover. He looks so intense as he's about ready to throw a stone through that glass house. Billy's trying to be a badass, but that's why we loved him back then, right?
Glass Houses seemed to Billy tribute to the Stones. I remember listening to this album at 16 in my room, over and over again. Ahh, the days of real rock n roll and great music...
I'm assuming 'high quality' could be pulled off a 4th grader's tape recorder... Somehow if a song is BADASS enough to sound good even when the sound *quality* is low... Songs are songs AND THIS IS ONE OF THE GRESTEST!!!
This is a great song...somewhat fitting for todays times. I must admit I never considered the act of self manipulation, but perhaps I'm not paying close enough attention to the lyrics..
I use to touch myself to this song. I love this song. It's not that I thought of Billy in that way, I was just in the height of a change (puberty) and I did that to most any music... or none at all.
This album ROCKS and I thank my older sister for introducing me to such cool tunes. Almost 30 years later I still love this tune...and I still touch myself. lol I love me! Nothing funny though, this is an awesome tune. BJ rocks.
Yes, this was an attempt at humor. I hope you laughted.
?Sorry .... what exactly is rare about this song? rare songs don't typically end up on full length LPs. Great song, though .... very overlooked. Fantastic beat.
Agreed. It is definately a little known or possibly forgotten gem (the whole LP is almost a greatest hits IMO). Have you heard the non-album rare cut "You Picked A Real Bad Time"? Actually I think it might be on the My Lives collection, though I first heard it as the B-Side to "All About Soul".
@mission2marsden Ahhh True. Great little gem on a great LP. I suppose in the age of iTunes, etc. these 'non-hits/great tunes' get a bit lost in the shuffle. Everything on Cold Spring Harbour is like that. Another great LP.
@mission2marsden true. you have to be a big fan of his. incidentally, I have it on my mp3 on my "I hate the world" playlist to play on days when I am just pissed off at the entire human race lol.
@mission2marsden XD I love this song, hence why when I saw one of his concerts in 2007 I got the Glass Houses T-Shirt, that and that album is too dang awesome
@RoadDoggNTB hey if you want rare, look up rosalinda, just rosalinda the only verson was from a concert i think in '72 just after attila's album dumped, and joephene, same as rosalinda, there is only one known verson, i belive there are only a few live versons from songs on cold spring harbor, most of them i belive were from rainbow room, i think i'm not sure but i know it was before cold spring harbor came out
easily one of the most underrated Billy Joel songs ever! Great post!

It is the "B" side of "You May Be Right" on the 45rpm. Yep, I had 45's, still do. I have the album too and 4 others. He jammed back in the day.

I referred to it as rare because not many Billy fans out there have heard of this song.
