Within the TV series I think this is a lot of the reason for her hesitation to like him as although she can see the other side of him (the side which comes out when Godric dies etc) she can also see the violent vampire side. Although this behaviour is understandable in the context of his survival it still seems extremely brutal to human ethical judgement

I find it very interesting that Sookie seems to have always preferred Eric. Her V-inspired sex dreams about Bill were just that... sex. Whereas with Eric they were always about tenderness and romance. It's like she knows she likes Eric better, but couldn't let herself be with him unless his softer side showed through.

It truly shows why he has become the way he is (arrogant/self serving) and helps us to understand that he was actually a good person but under the circumstances he has found himself within, in order to survive, he has had to change... through this he is able to let Sookie in in a way he never would have been able to as his 'true' self

I love how people just seem to forget that Eric is more than willing to torture, rip apart, devour, glamour, mentally subjugate and manipulate others to suit his own ends, living by Godric's mantra of "There is no right or wrong, only survival or death"(S2E09). He has been on Earth for a thousand years and has probably done more killing and torture than a dictator, considering his passing disregard for humanity. His pathology is something off of Criminal Minds, he should be vilified not loved.

Well, also keep in mind that he's not the type to act without cause--he spared Lafeytte's life, even though the latter was selling V, a grave offense. And he left Jason alone with found him to b buying V. He's a big manipulater, that I'll certainly agree with. He devours and glamour because he's a vampire. Face it, no matter how human-like vampires are portrayed in the media these days, they are still vampires. They go by a more bloodthirsty code of survival than humans.
