  • My wife and I visited the U.S.S. Midway in Sept. of 2011. It was an amazing experience to say the least. We enjoyed every minute of our visit. We were even jet lagged from flying from Chattanooga, TN but it was the first thing we wanted to do. It was interesting seeing what life for a Sailor is like. GOD BLESS our Armed Forces.

    Former Amn. Aslinger U.S.A.F.

  • I was there then, checked in July 1 1976, worked V-2 CATS.Was there on all of this. check out web CV-41.org for photos I took. Charles "Tinker" Faulkner.

    CV-41 76-78 CV-63 78,79.

  • I arrived on Midway in Jan of 77, Marine Detachment, Not a Zoomie, I really like the films, thanks for posting. Semper Fi.

  • I am a past crew member 60-62. Worked in M division, #4 eng room, pump room and gen room, and #3 generator room. I posted several still on the Midway.org photo gallery. Was there in 2003. Great Crew, Great Ship. Miss it all.

  • I barely visited the uss midwayTODAY!!

  • Mr. NightFlyer, My father is Maj. Bob Spooner. Give me a Call 214 282 7482

  • My ships were the Camden A0E-2 and missouri BB63. We unreped Midway on the Camden many a times. Glad she made it as a museum and didn't get cut up like the Camden,.

  • RIP MARK MORGAN OF THE USS MIDWAY

  • That was a great video!!!! Do you still keep in contact with some of the marines from VMFP-3 DET III?

  • Thank you sir for this posting. I visited the Midway recently on a visit to San Diego.

I was there with my family and a friend who id an ex military aviator from England's RAF. Most enjoyable.

  • usa!!

  • That F4 catching the barracade was not a RF4 it was one of ours (VF 161). Lt Cmr Charlie McDaniel was the pilot and the rio was ensign Pazic. I was completly amazed to see this video as I watched it from just forward of the island. Amazing! Thanks for sharing this!

I was a plane captain in VF 161.

  • priceless ,, to have a first hand account ,,,thank you ,,,, no hollywood setup here

  • I served aboard Midway from 1986 to 1988. I got to watch the last F-4 ever to fly off her decks in 1986. I helped rehab the old girl when they added "blisters" to her sides while in drydock in 86-87.I saw the USS Wisconsin fire her 16 inchers. I got to see Bob Hope, Barbara Eden and Lee Greenwood in her hanger bay,Dec 24,1987. Saw more of the PI than I cared to and finally got shot off the pointy end in 1988.Visited a dozen countries on 3 continents. It was a hell of a ride.

  • Wow! What a great video about a great ship. Nice nostalgia and you are a patriot. Lee Greenwood and Ray Charles, great songs. Kind regards from your Aussie Allies...

  • You, sir, made an awesome video. Thank you.

  • I served aboard her from '72 to '75 in Engineering dept, 'A' gang. Many memories of her, when I was there I was fresh from boot camp, 18yo and couldn't wait to leave and never see her again. Now I can't see enough of her and am so thankful that she is preserved as a musem now. She is a classic.

  • I bolted the angle deck on her when she was in Hunter's Point in ~1970. Looks like it didn't fall off. that's good.

  • Thanks for your service man !

  • Very nice. I was aboard her from 1986 to 1988 with VFA-151. Best time of my life!

  • I really enjoyed that "old" footage Dave!

  • I get to sleep in the crew quarters with my scout troop near the end of the month

  • i toured it last year on this day was great had fun time big ship!!! wanna go again

  • Merci..! it was fun to watch !

  • This video brings back a lot of memories, I spent 4 years aboard her from 1979-83 with VA-115, I even did mess duty in the galley, she was my first intro to the real Navy.

  • @MrRetseabee I also served on board from 81-84, OI Division

  • im joining the navy this summer..i hope i have great stories to tell, like many of these fine sailors

  • wow thats cool my father was in the navy in 1993 his ship was USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 he has a video of aircraft looks like some of the planes in your video besides the f-4. I am going to be in the air force when im out of college so I am grateful that you surved. I am 14 now it will be a long time for me to be in the air force.

  • We were there this weekend and I am still processing all of the chills and emotions that I felt while walking through her greatness as a floating city at sea. I can only say that living so close to San Diego I know for sure that we will go again sometime next year. Between Balboa Park and the Embarcadero, there is much to do. But nothing as emotional as being on the Midway.

    Thanks for this lovely video.

  • Well done, I served on the Midway in 81-82 IM-2 Div tire shop.

  • I was just there this weekend and it was great. My Family loved it. Thanks for the vid

  • All right! What a great video! Mr. Herbert you are a great american, just like those who served this great country in the past, present and future.

In the message box regarding this fine video, regarding the year 1976, your post reminded me that when I was 14 yrs old my folks built a new house.

So I wanted to celebrate the bi-centenial of the usa I was able to decorate my room with red, white, and blue. For example the curtains were red white blue.

The carpet might have been red, not sure.

  • Nice ship, big crew and brought a lot of business to the Fleet Landing shops in Hong Kong .Twice she was sent away after anchoring because of hurriances, many sailors slept at the Fleet Landing hall. Wives and children from San Franciso were not allowed abroad because of the high winds only to have a kiss-goodbye at the pier. Generally, these officers and sailors are polite and friendly to us and spent a lot of money sending home chinas and souven Missed them. Nowadsys, fewer US ships visit HK.

  • Thank you for your service!

We were just on the USS Midway over the 9-11 memorial this past weekend. What a great time. The video and narration are perfect. Thanks Daren

  • good video

  • Thank you for putting this together, my squadron was VF-151 and I left her in January 1976. I hope one day to get back to San Diego and visit here again. But for now you rposting brings back great memories for me. Thank you so much !

  • I was in San Diego in 2006. We went for the beaches and discovered the Midway was there. We spent an extra day in San Diego and that whole day was spent on the Midway. It was a learning experience and great to see a piece of history up close. Even flew the flight simulators on board. I plan on returning to the Midway next month. If you've never been to see her...plan on spending the whole day on her. It's the only way to experience and see everything.

  • Great video! I visited the USS Midway last year ( check my video ) and I loved the museum. Didn't have enough time (just around 2 h) but I will be back in december. In fact, USS Midway was the second aircraft carrier I have visited in the USA, after the USS Intrepid in NYC. This year I was lucky enough to visit the USS Yorktown ( video coming soon ) in Charleston , SC. Still, Midway is the one I like most :) Thank you for your service. God bless the USA! Greetings from Poland.

  • Thanks for the memories NightFlyyer. I served on the Midway in 85 and 86 with VF-161 Rock Rivers (the Phantoms with the red lightning bolt on the tail). The best time of my life, hope to get to San Diego to see her again.

  • This brings tears and memories back as I was on her from January 1965 to March 6 1966 when she went into decommissioning, was an electricians mate, during Vietnam cam campaign, I had the nickname SE Walrus, I live in Shelton,Washington and work part time at Cabelas in Lacey,WA my name is Ron York

  • I was stationed on the USS MIDWAY (The Tip of the Sword) from 1990 to 1992. I was actually on the decommissioning crew also. I was aboard her during Desert Shield which transpired to Desert Storm. I got to be MM3 Petty Officer before I left her. I was in 4 engine room and 4 Generator room. I spent quite a bit of time in #3 Engine room doing my watches also. This video brings back a lot of memories. Especially the little sleeping quarters. Thanks for the memories NightFlyyer

  • NightFlyer - the picture of the computer room - I note that it is still sporting the old Univac 642B systems. Was this a vintage picture or was it taken on you visit to her in San Diego?

  • Thanks so much for the memories - I have not thought about some of those scenes in years. I was there on the o7 level when the F4 went into the barrier - I was stuck on the beach on SP during that stormy visit to Korea, and the "Computer Before Windows 3.1" was one of mine - the computer room was on the first deck right across the passage way from one of your offices - dang we made some money selling cokes and coffee to the Jar heads!

  • Total Pleasure Sir!! Thanks so much for the tour.. I'll be heading to San Diego in 2 days to see her myself in person!

    God Bless!

  • My father served on the Midway October of 1976 to Octoboer of 1978.

It was an honor to be able to go back and see it.

  • Just beautiful

  • Great Video!

    HT3 Woods RH, R-Div, 1975-1977

    aka "Burny Burn-Out"

    USS Midway CV-41

  • Nice. I enjoyed the video. I was on the CV-41 in 1989. We lost one FA-18 hornet. Catapault failed. At the time I think a Hornet was 2.2 million... Thanks.

  • I enjoyed the video, my dad served on the midway during Vietnam. Were paying for tickets for him to go see the ship again, i'm also putting together a model and painting it and putting it in a case, when we give him the tickets. Do you happen to remember what were the main combat/support wings that were on there.

I didn't join the navy but i did join the army and served for 8 years and was medically discharged for taking 2 rounds while on a mission. you might have served when he did.

  • Thank you, Msgt. I served on board from 1979 to 1981, some of the best years of my life.

  • My Uncle served on Midway before he was discharged back in the 60's. In '68 he was killed in a motorcycle accident @ age 27. Thanks for letting me see where he served. This is all I really know about him.

  • Just toured the Midway and neat to see film of her operational. Thanks very much for posting.

  • Great video. I served aboard with VA-56 from 76-78. I remember the cargo nets in Korea. Your video brought back a lot of memories of flight ops and what a thrill it was!

  • My brother was on that ship before it was de-commissioned

  • bellissimo video!!!saluti dall'italia!!

  • i visited the midway early 2009 and was very disapointed there are so many aircraft that should be on the ship like the f4u and a lot

ww11 aircraft ---also where are the guns-- not there

  • We didn't have guns. We had jets with guns. Also, the aircraft are still coming aboard. The museum has only been there 4 years and still growing. It is as I remembered it.

  • @NightFlyyer I was in VMFP3 on Det 3 and was right under the flight deck watching ( on the closed circuit TV in the AIMD Com/Nav Avionics shop) when the F4 hit the barricade. I was on the MIdway again last week and I told the tour guides about this video. They didn't know about it. They said they would look it up. Thanks Top.

  • The Midway started out in 1945 with 18 5" guns, 84 40 mm, and around 30 20mm. Through the years as we entered the jet age they were removed as seen fit.

  • @hnnjo5 I was there this past weekend, there is now an F-4U, actually, I think it is an FG-1D Corsair, but nevertheless.

  • I was also on the Midway with J1 before it became P3 from 74-75. We helped evacuate Nam from the Gulf of Tonkin, haven't gone to see her down in San Diego but I do plan on taking the family soon. Thanks for the memories Top.

  • I was on the Midway from '89 until decommission with VA-185 Nighthawks. We were like station "dito" in Subic. Subic was our second homeport. Lot's of good memmories on this ship. The best ship in the Navy. Midway magic!!!

  • I was on board at this same time. An ET working on the link 4/11 radio gear that your guys used to do ACLS (automatic carrier landing system link 4). I do remember the cargo nets in Korea and also the cold cat shot near the Korean DMZ. My rack was right below the port cat and so I got hear launches and bolters! - A long time ago. Thanks for the memories.

  • thats an awesome picture 1:49 plus i went to the museum it rocked

  • that was a great tribute. I saw her in 7-06 she's beautiful

  • i saw this in person it was a fucking orgasm of history

  • Great video, thanks.I visited the Midway last Octorber, everyone should see this amazing ship.we stayed all day there and I will deff vist again when I visit the US again.

  • Cool 41 Ratings match the ship's number 41

  • oops 42 :S

  • Great video! Those f-4's smoked more than dean martin!!!...How was the chow on midway? The sailor's eat like king's nowadays. What was it like in the phillipines? were the people nice to american's?

It must be really great to be able to go and visit a ship that you served on...WOW!!

Have you ever been on a modern carrier? What was it like to fly on an F-4?

  • The chow on the Midway was really great, I was a jarhead and it was way better than the chow at Iwakuni. The ship was also much more comfortable than the cold barracks at Iwakuni where we had no hot water. The people in the P.I. were extremely friendly to us Americans.

  • great! i was 1 year ago on the Midway, that was in San Diego! Very impressive! Thanks for the Video!

  • Hi -Dave thanks for the video-just visited, the Midway with my family on holiday from England August 2009.We had an excellent time, being an ex phantom man it was kind of a trip down memory lane for me and my friend who came on holiday with his family also.I do envy you having a jolly in the back seat what was the kick of the catapult like?regards f4phixer,check out some of my f4 videos, cheers!

  • Great video!

  • I asked about Rob and Rick Spooner because their mother, whose name I don't remember, used to babysit us through a babysitting "Coop" along with other Marine families. She was so nice.

I can't believe all the flashbacks I'm having about those years that I had completely forgotten.

    Thanks for posting this clip!

  • Arden is her name =). Rob and Rick are my cousins. Yes Rob and Rick are Bob's children.

  • Thanks Lonechief -- that's right, Arden.

I even remember the inside of their house. I was 6 or 7 then. 40 now. Chuckle.

  • I just emailed my dad this clip. Does Bob Spooner happen to have boys named Rob and Rick? My dad was on this carrier when we were in El Toro from 1976-1980. He is (was) Captain Lennard Paulsen (major when he left for the airlines).

I remember being on the Midway as a little girl. Of course to me back then, the planes (the F-4's he flew) were just big noisy things that hurt my ears--that would take my dad away for long periods of time, ha!

I also remember Christmases at the squadron.

  • What a great presentation. The Midway will always hold a place in my heart as well. I had the priveledge of saluting her as she left the pier in Yokosuka for the last time on her final voyage to decom in California. Thank you for the tribute to a great warrior.

  • Just got to visit the USS Lexington at Corpus Christi. Seems a bit narrower than our beloved Midway. I might post some video if I can figure out how to do it, Thanks for your work to keep our memories vivid.

  • i just visited midway today...very beautiful ship...it was very exciting..

  • the midway is a uniqe carries i seen her in service and now a museum my father was on the uss reeves cg 24 he was station in pearl when i first saw her i have a modelof the midway thanks for the video and appreciate your service.

  • Thanks. That is very kind of you to say. I appreciate your father's service too, so please tell him.

  • My complements very well put together and presented.

It must however be a very strange sensation to be visiting what was once your home. Only now your home is a museum open to the public. I know I am in mid 40s and when I see articles of youth such as Beta machines and the like in museums. A strange feeling enters my mind. I don't know if it's nostalga or what...

Still well done, I really enjoyed watching this clip.

  • Thanks for the very kind words. I know the feeling. For me, it is Extreme pride, as I know how our country got to where we are, and I will not forget it. Today, not many really know, so the "nostalgic" (good word) Midway will keep the memories alive. Thanks again,

    Dave

  • Thanks very kindly. I call it Pride, as I know where our country came from and it's history, which may young people today do not. The USS Midway Museum, will be a constant reminder of our "Nostalgic" (good word) past.

    Thanks again.

  • Very cool films. I'm visiting San Diego in July this year from the UK. The USS Midway is top of my "must see" list. Very nice to see film of actual operations. Makes the whole thing seem more real somehow. Smoke and thunder Hog F-4...gotta love it. Thanks for showing.

  • Thanks very kindly. You will live the Midway Tour. I hope you get to see her.

  • aaa

  • Wow! what fabulous footage. I have to say thank you!!! I just saw the USS Midway for the first time yesterday. Words cannot even begin to express how awesome that experience was. To walk where so many brave men walked before. To see where they lived and gave their selves in service to our country. The music is a wonderful complement to the film. Thank you once again! Amazing :)

  • Thanks very kindly. I really appreciate your comments and am so glad you got to see the Midway.

  • I was on Det 3 in the Com/Nav IMA Shop. with Jim Gammelgaard, Mike "Charlie" Sykes, Ray Shields, Roger Beckler, Joel Vigue, I was in the IMA shop right below the Flight deck when that plane hit the barriacade. It made a lot of noise right above our head. We came out to a sponson right below where the bird ended up hanging over the side with fuel dripping everywhere so we quickly get back in. at El Toro we were with HMS-11. Pusan sure was cold and so was Iwakuni.. We have VMFP3 reunions often.

  • Nice to hear from you. Thanks for serving during those times too. I have been to the Midway a lot, since it was reopened, and love it. You? I remember those names, but you didn't mention yours. Korea was awfully cold, including that ride in and Iwakuni was too. Check out my El toro RF4b vid and the Air museum vid. Bet you will like those too. Semper Fi Marine and thanks for the comments.

  • I am Sgt Ron Vera. went to S/Diego to see CV41 in 2007. I was a 6620 "A" School and AFTA. We worked on Com/Nav avionics. UHFRadiosRT546/ IFF/HARA/HF Radios(ARC105)/ TACAN KY531- RT736. Our boss was Top Garcia. others Al Ekas, Dennis Winton, Reynaldo Vega, Zunke, Jack Jiracek, Sparky, Joe Delee. I have my Original Orders dated 21July1976 with all Det 3names including Maj.Spooner, Cpts Claunch, Ewers, 1st Lts. Fagan, Miller, Palacio, Peck, Putnam, Yencha. Msgt. McSherry Gunny Fox, Gray, Parramore

  • All Right. I remember a lot of those names for sure. I flew in the back seat with Bob Spooner on several occasions and he even gave my dad a high speed back seat taxi ride at El Toro. You may know me as Gy "A'bear", Electric shop NCOIC and when I was on the Midway & was MSGT. Do you know where Bob Spooner is? Do you keep in touch with these other folks too?

I'm glad you stopped by and for your comments and also the names, for which I am very appreciative. Semper Fi Marine. <<<x)))

  • Hey guys! What memories come flashing back when I read those names Maj Spooner, Mike Fagan, Don Peck, Joe Yencha. By then your Capt Dugan was Maj Dugan and was the MO. You see I was with them in '79 aboard the Midway - just known as "Lt SOUP_PLYYY!!!" or "Supply Puke". As Marine 3060's we always knew where our nuts (and CP860's) were!!! I was compelled to watch all the video references posted here & on the RF4B Society pages (my Cpl Rinaldi got out as a Maj?....Sh---T Hot!) SemperFi Marines!

  • As my son pointed out my patches say I was at Iwakuni in '77 and I went to Group Supply in '79.

  • I have seen many of your videos, Dave and this one REALLY moved me. You're a true patriot, thanks for your service to our country. Although I served in the Army, military pride comes in many forms but the feelings they generate are all the same. Reading these comments from Marines like yourself creates emotion within me that I do not need to tell you because you already know. Some people just "get it" and I'm right there with you all. God Bless the USA and all who served her with pride!

  • You are very kind to say that. Thanks very much to you for your service too. Best regards.

  • Hi NightFlyyer!

Great video of Midway flight ops back in 76; also, the longer dvd is terrific too! I'm just wondering what months Det III of VMFP-3 was deployed on Midway in 1976, since the ship made several deployments that year.

Great work, and thanks again for the dvd! Also, a great score--Ray Charles and Lee Greenwood can't be beat for a video like this!

    Take Care, and thanks!

    dmw11111

  • Thanks you very kindly. Well I went in Oct 75 and came back in May 76, as I recall. Glad you enjoyed the video.

  • I watched the last F4 fly off the Midway before she took on the F18's

  • WOW, what a rush that had to be. Did you video it? Thanks for your service too.

  • Great footage. Thanks for the memories! In 1976, I was with VMAQ-2 Det A & B. I enjoyed Det A so much I stayed for B or vice versa. I was a COM/NAV tech in AIMD working mainly on RT542/546 UHF radios out of A6 and F4's. We split our time between the Midway and Coral Sea as Midway went in drydock. Great times. It was an honor and pleasure to serve.

    Semper Fi

  • Thanks very kindly and thank you for your service too. Those were the days all right. I enjoyed the Midway the most out of all the tours I ever did in the Marines too. It is the one I remember most. I was also thrilled to go see her as a Museum now and show my friends and family. Semper Fi. Top A'bear, Avionics Chief. Ret. <<<x)))

  • I was in the AIMD Com Nav shop on the 3rd DET. We relieved Jim Dyer, Jerry Tacosa, Joe Corbin, Michael Sykes and JIm Gammelgaard. I worked on the IFF and TACAN. The Navy guys, were 1st Class George somebody, Mike Mance, Gabriels, John Long, Thompsom ( thumper)

  • Thanks for the memories, I was on board at the same time 75-77. I was in VF 151 the F4's with the yellow and black striped tails. I was their DCPO. I also have still shots of the F4 crash. I thought he was going over the side for sure. I also knew Lcdr Counts who got the cold cat shot. You should remember that one. Thanks for the video.

I left 151 for Task force 99 Operation Deep Freeze.

    Snakebite......

  • WOW. Thanks for the comments. Your the first person who has said he was there and remember that crash. I thought he was going over too. I remember cold cat shot too. LOL. Great for you to comment and thanks for your service. Those were the days, ya know.

  • Nice vid. Only 1 corsair a4.. :(

    Breaking the bow

  • Haha. Yep. Sorry. I'm a Phantom guy, I guess, as you can see from my F4 Phantom review video. LOL Thanks kindly.

  • sir dave you been in my country roo philippines wow!! cool 'mabuhay dave herbert' it means long live dave herbert in philippines hehe

  • Thanks kindly. I love the PI. It was great back then for us military types. We called it the "Disneyland of the Far East". LOL. Mabuhay to you too.

  • wow really big ship there sir dave! hehe

  • Yes it was.

  • Brings back a lot of great memories. I was in VMCJ-1 at DaNang in '67 and '68. Are you going to the reunion of Marines who served working on the RF-4B? It's being held at Cherry Point next August. Read about it on the RF-4B web site.

  • Haha Thanks kindly. Yep, I was in VMCJ-1 in Da Nang in 69 and 70. Long live the RF's. I will look into the renunion. Thanks for serving and Semper Fi.

  • I had the chance to visit Midway last summer. it was so great to see the old tech. and aircraft. I was amazed by the size of this carrier so huge.

Thank you for this tribute. As far as I know some of the people who work on it are navy retierees. It is really nice to have them work as a tourist guide after the decommesion.

  • Good for you. Glad you enjoyed it. THanks for your kind comments.

  • My father served in vmfp3, in avionics. Does the name Richard Meyer sound familiar? He was aboard in 1976 and 1978. I forget what his rank was at the time, but I know he ate in the Chief's mess. (When we toured the Midway together a few years ago, he was especially proud to show us that!)I really love your video because it helps me understand how my father was serving when I was just a newborn. Thanks so much for your service.

  • Yes, I know that name. I think he was a gunny. Does he remember me? I was in charge of Electric shop and my nickname was A'bear. Thank him for his service and I thank you for your kind words too.

  • Cool vid, although I wasn't born yet, thank you for your service.

  • Thanks for your kind comment.

  • very cool

  • Thanks.

  • thanks for this video! I flew this old thunder hog off this gal with det charlie '81-'82, plus 2 other WestPac dets. Thanks for the memories.

  • I became a shellback on her also. Funny how time goes by and then you start missing friggin IO tours, or probaly just your shipmates. I do miss the P.I.

G-3 foward bomb assembly here. 80-83

Reply if you served during this time and if you were in weapons dept.

  • hanks for your service too. I know what you mean. I was out on her with a Marine Detatchment of RF4Bs in 75-76 from El Toro.I was NCOIC of the Electric shop and also as volunteer Flight Deck Safety officer. I miss it too, as it was my most exciting time in my Marine Corps career of 33 years. You need to go visit her in San Diego. It would be the best vacation day you ever spent, if you saw her today.

  • AO1 Rivera, REORTING AS ORDERED SIR, WEAPONS DEPT. G-1/G-5 DIV. 1989-1994. THE TIP OF THE SWORD. BEST CARRIER CREW A EVER WORKED WITH, MISS THOSE GUYS.

Jim Oase AQ1 US Navy... a long time ago

  • Thanks for your comments and your service. I hope you get to visit her often.

  • Thanks NightFlyyer...I served on the MIDWAY during this time 75-77 I was a snipe in A Gang so I didn't get to see quite as much as you but I have many fond memories, especially PI. I remember the footage on Pusan but for some reason I don't remember the crash. Did we go to GQ? I don't know if you knew this or not but the MIDWAY used a gallon of fuel every 13 feet. Thanks again NightFlyyer GOD be with you and your family.

  • Thanks kindly for your comments and your service. We did not go to GQ....or I would have had to split the Aft Eye. Good info about the fuel. Regards, Dave

  • Thanks for super video. Brings back lot of memories - all pleasant of the aircraft, the men who served with me in VMCJ-3/VMFP-3, and the fun of flying the missions. I was a ARO with Det II and flew a lot of missions in the RF-4B. Every ride was an 'E Ticket'. Best wishes and Semper Fi. LtCol Chuck Walters USMC (Ret)

  • Thanks kindly and especially for your service. Semper Fi back at you. MSGT A'bear. <<<x)))

Any idea where Col. Spooner is?

  • Nice Vid....I was with the last attempted deployment by VQ-1(89)off P.I..... The whale had a hell of a time landing, The deck was rolling/ pitching all over. Seems The F-18s needed a higher deck so they added some buoyancy to the ship to lift her out of the water some 10-15feet.After a few weeks our Pilots had no luck putting the whale onboard so they ordered us off. (Thank GOD) I didn't mind leaving due to no berthing available, I was sick of sleeping on maintenance floor. LOL

  • Thanks kindly, and thanks for serving. There were always difficult times, but the PI was fun and made up for a lot of built up tension.

  • Nightflyyer, what great memories. I was aboard Midway during that time, assigned to VA-93. If you still have your Taking Care of Business cruise book, I'm on page 292, center photo on the far right. Do you have any photos of AIMD Paraloft, or the combined squadron Av/Equipment shop that was located off the hangar deck beneath CONFLAG 1? If you do, can you post them.

Thanks again for a whole load of great memories.

  • Hi and thanks for serving. I will look for any pictures. Have you visited her since she became a museum? That would be a great venture for you. I love to go there and wonder around.

  • VA-115 Eagles 1986 -1989, She is without doubt the best, well oiled, well-crewed and well-led aircraft carrier of the Cold War Era. I still love her dearly.

  • Thanks for your comments, and thanks for your service. Better go visit her. You will never forget what you see and feel when you do.

  • Wow, I served on Midway from 75-77. Wow. I landed on a COD during Frequent Wind and left in port in the PI. Thank you for this.

  • Thank you for your service. We were out there at the same times. It is a great ship. Thanks for your comments too.

  • You're welcome, NightFlyyer. I was 18 and served as a damage control/hull tech/hose team guy below decks. But I spent much time on top of the island watching Phantoms and Intruders launch. Perth, West Australia was my ultimate port. You've inspired me to head out to San Diego and see the ship. Thank you for YOUR service!

  • Thanks for this post! I was with VA-115 and VA-185 both on USS Midway. What a great memory of my Naval career! Thanks again! AME1 USN Ret.

  • Your welcome and thank you for your service to our Military. I'm sure you have lots of memories too.

  • Another guy here from VA-185 '89-'91

  • Thanks kindly and thanks for your service. I appreciate it.

  • I accidentally ran across this, was looking for info on the Midway. I can't tell you how much this video moved me. I fell in love with aircraft carriers a few years ago, all because of visiting her in San Diego. Thanks for posting this, it is truly a treasure!!

  • Thanks very kindly. I appreciate that.

  • Wow, great footage. Love those smokin' thunderhogs.

  • Thanks kindly.

  • I was on this ship a few weeks ago. Very cool! Thanks for this video.

  • Your welcome. I am glad you liked it and your tour too.

  • The tour was great! We did that our last day in SD. Also loved the maritime museum. With the Star of India, HMS Surprise (used in Master and Commander movie) and the Russian sub. Very cool! Thanks again NF.

  • i want to say thank you for sharing this video with us all. Also this past weekend i visited the Midway for the first time, but being there now, cant be anything like the first time, while she was in service. It left a lasting impression on me. I will visit her again before i head back home. Thank you so much for letting me see what she was really like!!!

  • Thank you very kindly. She is quite the queen alright. Thanks for your service too.

  • Thanks NightFlyyer,

Was a pilot in VMFP-3 from 1976-78. One Detachment served with Bob Spooner in 1978 on the Midway. Fantastic adventure, Midway Magic and all. Just visited the Midway this past weekend....first time aboard in 30 years!

Fantastic, and thanks for the video....especially the VMFP-3 stuff.

By the way Bob retired from an Airline job about 7 years ago and lives in Chicago.

  • WOW, Thanks. I would love to get a hold of Bob, and let him see this. Any way you can forward this to him? He gave my Dad a high Speed taxi ride in an RF4b at El toro. If you were a pilot in 76, I must know you. PM me.

  • Thank you for serving our country dave.

  • Thank you. That is very kind of you to say that.

  • Awesome brings back many a memory I was with VMFP-3 from 1985-1988 as a powerplant mech nothing like watching those birds take off in full AB and knowing your skills and knowledge helped make it happen. Semper Fi

  • Thank you kindly and especially for your service too. I sure miss those days now. Never thought I would, but I do.

    Semper Fi.

  • I was a Marine Security Guard at Yokosuka Japan 1985-1987. SHe was so awesome when she was berthed at dry dock 6. I really miss those day as Im sure all of us do.

  • Great and Thank you! I spent 2 weeks in Iwakuni over Christmas that in 75-76 and She was docked at Yokosuka then too. Her home port. She is now docked in San Diego, and she is really beautiful. Go visit, if you can, you will never regret it. Semper Fi <<<x)))
